Final Fantasy XIV leadership ejected, PS3 version delayed

Management of every area changed as Square Enix offers "sincerest of apologies," promises changes, extends free-play period indefinitely.

When the latest Final Fantasy massively multiplayer online game came out, it met a volley of criticism from players and critics alike. Today, Square Enix apologized to players, promised a further extension of Final Fantasy XIV's free trial period, announced a complete management restructuring, and confirmed the PlayStation 3 version would miss its March 2011 ship date.

No one will be taking up arms in Eorzea on the PS3 any time soon.
No one will be taking up arms in Eorzea on the PS3 any time soon.

The most high-profile departure is producer/director Hiromichi Tanaka, who has stepped down and been replaced by Naoki Yoshida. In a statement accompanying the news, Tanaka apologized for the current state of Final Fantasy XIV, taking full responsibility for the game's shortcomings. While Tanaka is stepping down from his current roles, he will "be continuing to support the development team in other capacities."

As well as a new director, the project now has a new assistant director, lead game designer, lead combat system designer, lead programmer, and lead artist, among others. The new team will be producing game updates more regularly, according to Square Enix. There are two scheduled before the end of the year, with more details on their content to follow.

Confirming the PS3 version delay, Square Enix "humbly" asked for a player's "continued patience and understanding." The firm said the game would not hit Sony's platform until it was "confident that the game has reached the level of enjoyability and service befitting the Final Fantasy name."

Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada apologized to fans for the state of game and pledged to extend the game's free trial period "until we are able to confidently present [players] with a concrete plan outlining Final Fantasy XIV's new direction."

@ gordreborn Buy out their competition? They bought a struggling EU company before it collapsed. How is that buying out their competition?

@RossRichard I honestly don't believe WoW is even the highest quality MMO. It's the MMO with the most subscribers, nothing more. Most of those are young teens who play because it's the "it" MMO. Look further afield and you'll actually finder higher quality MMOs, just with less subscribers. Sure, having the most subscribers is a mean accomplishment, but it doesn't necessarily make it the best MMO around. To determine the best of something you have to consider all factors, not just one of them. In this case, not just the amount of subscribers.

@Purplekjw My post had nothing to do with 'successful' MMOs. My post had to do with WoW setting the bar of quality so high. UO and EQ were good for their time, but their quality nor their subscriber numbers never came close to WoW.

there r two main problems with square-enix: one, they buy a lot of their competition, which is what enix would do before the merge, so in many cases u have to settle for a sub-par square-enix game if u like rpgs; second, they alter their final fantasy games so much that I highly doubt if anyone had picked up final fantasy xi, xii, xiii, or xiv on the fly they'd know it was a final fantasy game. they need to be evolving the final fantasy system not changing it entirely! plus, I find it insulting that they name their online games as part of the main series. they must think their fans r sheep, and that they'll buy anything.

Im honestly not looking forward to this instalment of FF. The review above made it sound so terrible, that i may as well stick with Warcraft. Seeing as its a PS3 game, the only other ive bothered to look into is DCuniverse. If they fix all the bugs and problems of the game then I may play it.

Soooo the PC version just gets left hanging as the crap fest that it is..? And wow, they must've REALLY f'ed up to take up this risky business decision, but hey, atleast they're being honest and willing to go this far to try and make things right, so let's see what happens.

@RossRichard Are you serious? WoW was not the first successful MMO. Are you seriously calling UO crap? Everquest? Without those two games, WoW wouldn't even exist.

at this moment in time that was the best decision they could have made. Happily wait another year if it means increasing the quality of the game. Square enix need to make a hit though, FF12 caused a split in the audience but FF13 was on the whole undeniably bad. Whenever SE announced a new project their used to be a lot of hype now expectations have been lowered.

This game still has potential, but I'm afraid that this poor start will damage the game's future. It shouldn't have been released in that sorry state.

Fancy cut-scenes and great character models are not enough to make an MMO fly... it is all FF14 has that's not a painful disaster. (note to self... never buy a game based on wishful thinking and fancy trailers)

Just scrap the game and admit its failure. Take the resources and put them to work on something that might bring customers back. I know I'll never touch this game no matter what happens to it at this point...

@ TheTrueMagusX1 And it was his fault. While he had the novel idea of making Spirits Within less Final Fantasy, it was the worst decision ever. Had he just called it Spirits Within, with no ties to FF, the film might have done a bit better. As a film with no video game ties, it's competent. Not earth shattering, but certainly worthy of a watch or two and a spot on your DVD (or Blu-Ray) shelf. But having that FF slapped on the box and no actual FF inside, it's a major disappointment. Kind of like meeting a hot chick online, only to find out that picture of her is five years and 200-pounds ago. Or it was actually a dude.

No matter what any of you think of WoW, you can all thank Blizzard for raising the quality bar so high. Before WoW came out, crap like FF14 were the norm for MMOs. Now crappy MMOs die within weeks.

I'm actually happy about this, I'm not able to play my PC copy cuz my mahcine can't handle it so I've been waiting for the PS3 version. Hearing what my PC playing friends have to say about it I think I woulda quit by now... I'll be happy to get a decent PS3 version of the game when it finally hits the shelves. ^^

@joet1973 I will hardly Square Enix sucks by anymeans, sure they are not as strong as they once were but they are not a terrible company. I suggest you play games like The World Ends with you and you might not think that way. However though on to an internal struggle, yes there were an internal struggle at Square Enix. The merger happened because the film Final Fantasy the Spirits With In Flopped badly. Square lost a lot of money on that film. So the merger was neccesary, however some one needed to be blamed. And that person unfortunately was Hironobu Sakaguchi, as he was ousted from the company and would later on go on to create Mistwalker studios.

What on earth happened internally when Square and Enix merged? Square used to rock but now they suck. They don't need to fix their games so much as overhaul their whole company.

It was a pretty big fail IMO, but glad at least they take accountability for their faults, address there is a problem, and aplogize to their consumers. So I do respect that. Now if only Obsidian and Bethesda would take note. Apologies would go a long way especially when you've spent more time promoting your DLC than you did testing your game. Sigh...

It was only a matter of time before SE stepped up to make changes. Inevitable. Now expect good things from this game as SE is going to make up for a disappointing start and hopefully gain the trust of players who have been anticipating great things from this game.

Such a shame. I was so hyped for this game, and it has to be my biggest gaming disapointment ever. While making it free to play until they improve it is a smart idea, I doubt this game will ever recover.

"Square Enix "humbly" asked for players' "continued patience and understanding." Square Enix were smart to make this game f2p while they improve it, otherwise this game had been sunk already.

I won't accept his apology until he admits what a colossal ************** he was in basically telling the player base to suck it up because this is what he wanted the game to be and we should take a sugar frosted ************** off his ********************* and be grateful for it. Seriously, he was the Japanese equivalent of Kotick. @ tommygun6644 Which made no sense to me. As most people know, Those Without Life will blow through all the new content in less than month and be bored while awaiting the new content patch.

When was the last time that Square Enix got a 10 for one of their games???. I miss the days when square enix (square soft in the old days) used to make really great games like Vagrant History, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, Chrono Triggers, Secret of Mana, Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Cross.... Now it seems like the company has been going down with the pass of time, just getting normal reviews for all of their games, i mean they haven't release a great RPG in ages, all their games for the Wii are average and the best reviews received in the last year came from Final Fantasy XIII (8.5), The last Remnant (8.0), and Kigdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (7.5). I just hope that they don't screw up Final Fantasy XIII Versus, i'm really looking forward for that game.

@ zaxafreon Final Fantasy VIII had the worst battle system in the history of the series. It was overly complicated and so easily exploited that it made the game either too hard for people who couldn't figure out how to junction, or too laughably easy for those who do. My first play through was hard as hell since I couldn't figure anything out. I mostly used Summons and items to win the game at around level 45-50. A couple years later I realized how much of a joke it all was and just junctioned Firaga to my power and Ultima to my health to practically win the game at level 30 with no real need to grind at all. Just needed some Aura spells and watch all the bosses go down in 20 seconds. Including Ultima Weapon. The only reason I got to level 30 was because I didn't feel like ignoring all the enemies with Diablos' No Encounter ability and so I could have A LITTLE fun while playing instead of killing almost everything off in one hit. Omega Weapon was at least a challenge... except the Card Game was, while fun, was unfair for the fact that once I won Gilgamesh, I was set to beat Omega Weapon without receiving any damage at all due to the 10 Holy Wars I got from the card. The story is also, well, terrible... Really bad terrible. Music was great though overall (not a fan of the love song though.)
