Final Fantasy XIV leadership ejected, PS3 version delayed

Management of every area changed as Square Enix offers "sincerest of apologies," promises changes, extends free-play period indefinitely.

When the latest Final Fantasy massively multiplayer online game came out, it met a volley of criticism from players and critics alike. Today, Square Enix apologized to players, promised a further extension of Final Fantasy XIV's free trial period, announced a complete management restructuring, and confirmed the PlayStation 3 version would miss its March 2011 ship date.

No one will be taking up arms in Eorzea on the PS3 any time soon.
No one will be taking up arms in Eorzea on the PS3 any time soon.

The most high-profile departure is producer/director Hiromichi Tanaka, who has stepped down and been replaced by Naoki Yoshida. In a statement accompanying the news, Tanaka apologized for the current state of Final Fantasy XIV, taking full responsibility for the game's shortcomings. While Tanaka is stepping down from his current roles, he will "be continuing to support the development team in other capacities."

As well as a new director, the project now has a new assistant director, lead game designer, lead combat system designer, lead programmer, and lead artist, among others. The new team will be producing game updates more regularly, according to Square Enix. There are two scheduled before the end of the year, with more details on their content to follow.

Confirming the PS3 version delay, Square Enix "humbly" asked for a player's "continued patience and understanding." The firm said the game would not hit Sony's platform until it was "confident that the game has reached the level of enjoyability and service befitting the Final Fantasy name."

Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada apologized to fans for the state of game and pledged to extend the game's free trial period "until we are able to confidently present [players] with a concrete plan outlining Final Fantasy XIV's new direction."

cant believe how many ppl are saying ff XIII wasnt that bad.Seriously what was good about it apart from the graphics. characters were crap music was shocking by square standards very little exploration battles were the biggest let down, when i got to the part where shiva turns into a car was when i stopped playing the game,I mean where did all these crap ideas come from. I would say XIII is the biggest let down for me of all time. And anyone expecting versus XIII to get the series up and running will be let down once again,it will be just another linear action rpg.All the have to do is look at VII, VIII ,IX ,X and evolve not change the whole series completely removing everything that made Final Fantasy the series it is today.I'll say it again SQUARE ENIX YOU SUCK!!!!

I wasn't let down by FF13, but I know that many were, and in general SE have been releasing torrents of crap ever since the two companies merged. Think back to Squaresoft and Enix, proper quality titles from each of them. Now think of the games since they merged. See what I mean? Worst mistake they ever made.

This game was so bad it sent me back 11 FFs to FF3 on SNES. That game still rules too btw.

Apparently the leadership that was just replaced was also responsible for FF11 sucking early on. A new team was brought in and the game became solid. The exact same thing just happened here: the new leadership consists of roughly the same team that saved FF11. The real question is...if the original team did such a bad job, why did they get another chance? Okay, the answer isn't hard to figure out. We all know Squeenix is now run entirely by greedy businessmen who couldn't care less about brand integrity or quality (I remember when the new team of executives came on board. All they talked about was share price and the bottom line and I was like "Uh oh"), but now they've been caught with their pants down. Their only choice is to renew our faith by producing GOOD games.

w/e I'm still hopeful for the series and this game. After reading some of the comments I see some are reasonable comments but others i'm just thinking there's no hope for humanity. 2 examples i saw but i won't name names. 1. The graphics are bad and world is boring. Seriously? show me a better looking mmo available right now. 2. The FF series started going downhill after FFVII. Just stop, IX and X were easily some of the best in the series. In fact i'd say IX is the best in the series.

not surprised heads rolled after the abomination that was this game. its bad enough they keep on making these mmo's numbered as main games but to release it with soo many problems was just idiotic. the game has the lowest score out of all the games in the series which tells you something. oddly enough 13 and 14 have the lowest scores when they are the newest games. sure they still sell pretty well but by hurting the name of the series the sales will easily start to drop until a better game comes out. at this point if agito and vs13 are great i wouldn't be surprised that either of them could outsell ff13. i do feel somewhat bad for the dev team since likely this was just square using them as scapegoats for their bad business decisions but at the same time they went along with it so oh well. besides in the end having some new blood in the company might turn out pretty good. though the company could use a much bigger house cleaning than this. hopefully all the other games they have in developement kh coded port for the ds, untitled kh game for the 3ds, ffvs ps3 and ff13 agito and dissidia 2 psp wont be delayed because of the restructuring.

It looks absolutely fantastic, I wish the single player ones were more like this. I found the obtuseness of FFXI online was part of the fun, you had to actually think. Reviewer makes good points though. I would still love to play this though, add more stuff like XI, that is totally awesome.

Idiots.... Can you believe what SE just said?!! "[Until we are] confident that the game has reached the level of enjoyability and service befitting the Final Fantasy name." That's what they were supposed to do BEFORE releasing the damn game. Idiots!! They should definitely change the art style. I saw the video review here on GS and honestly, the world looks bland and boring.

@ TheTrueMagusX1 No, the movie failed because it had nothing to do with the FF series. Personally, I enjoyed the hell out of the movie, but as a movie fan. As a fan of the FF series from the beginning, it was a piece of utter crap. The people that first bought tickets (Fans of FF) to see this in the theaters went in expecting one thing, and got another. Had they just called it "The Spirits Within: a film by Squaresoft" people wouldn't have left the movie feeling ripped off. Again, great movie, but no FF.

One of the biggest problems with this game I have is the jobs. FFXI had all the classic jobs but in FFXIV every job has a stupid name, except for archer. But I'm glad SE isnt just ignoring the game, but actually trying to fix it.

Hiromichi Tanaka? Naoki Yoshida? Yoichi Wada? I don't really give a damn who these people are or what they do but I will say without Squaresoft legends like Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yoshitaka Amano, Akitoshi Kawazu, Tetsuya Nomura, and Nobuo Uematsu this time around, the main Final Fantasy series as we know it will never be the same.

@liam82517 Besides, your Chinese friends did basically the same thing when Mao Zhedong "liberated" Tibet. Chinese soldiers forced monks and nuns to have sex in the streets and also bayoneted babies and destroyed structures and statues that were thousands of years old. Did any Chinese generals get hung or jailed for this? Nope. But thousands of Tibetan monks sure as hell did

@spoonybard-hahs And you seem forget that film is a collaborative art, not a single art. Also let us not forget that the film actually has a few more ties to Final Fantasy than just the title. For example there is a Cid as there is in every FF game. He reused the Gaia theme that he used in FFVII. Some of the alien spirits resembled traditional Final Fantasy summons or enemies. The movie did not fail because it had a lack of Final Fantasy elements, it failed because it was not the easiest story to follow. It failed because it was not exactly a mainstream film. Thats why it failed....

I think the greatest thing about the Japanese is how their culture revolves around accepting personal responsibility. Criminal trials are exceedingly rare there because most people, when caught, admit what they did and accept their punishment. It's awesome how they are apologizing for releasing a crappy game. In the States, when a company releases a crappy bug-filled game, they either remain silent, never accepting responsibility or they quietly patch the game months later (Fallout: NV).

Not surprising in the least, considering you can't describe FF14 without the word "cluster". I am astounded how such a mess could make it to beta let alone release. @extremephobia I don't necessarily think they were wrong in blasting the devs. Some of it could be due to rush on the part of SE, but a lot of it looks like poor design choices to me, just look at the ui, chat interface, combat mechanics etc. More testing could have improved things, but overall their decision in terms of content are just BAD.

@PenguinIzzy I really don't have any argument for anything you said. xD I guess I'm just a huge WoW hater. It never seemed particularly fun to me compared to some other MMOs that sought to alter the genre, rather than duplicating it. It merely addictive and a huge time/money sink. I'm not trying to say it's bad. I just honestly believe that it doesn't deserve the fame it has. Almost like the Harry Potter or Twilight books. The only reason they were so hugely successful was because they had great publicity, and hundreds of thousands of people who don't normally touch books picked them up and read them because everyone else was. The truth is, there are far better books and authors. I have to say the new WoW expansion looks pretty amazing though, and it seems like a really great, original idea. (I wish I knew how to make paragraphs on Gamespot)

Maybe a staff restructuring is what FFXIV needs right now. Yet, with the PS3 version's delay and another free-trial extension period beyond the last two, it's pretty evident that things are a lot worse with the game than we thought.

XIV matches the slipping decline in quality the FF games have been suffering from since VII when they traded in quality (fantastic characters and great stories) for flash and CG cinematics. XII was looking to be the serie's rebound game with its stronger showing of characters and probably the best voice work in the series but the story was too generic and the gameplay was either something you really loved or you really hated. XIII... what to say... XIII is in the same pool of crappiness as XIV. Beautiful game but it's not fun to play. Corny story and dialogue, characters that are really tough to get attached to, the feeling that you're in the longest corridor of your life throughout 95% of the game. That entry fell way short of the mark. XIII felt like a PS2 game released on the PS3 and 360. With the way developers are pushing modern consoles there should have been so much more done with that game. And now we have XIV... a truly embarrassing failure for SE. Fortunately it's an MMORPG and can bounce back but damn... talk about a nightmare. I only play now to progress my crafting skills so that I can sell to the eventual onslaught of new players that occur once SE actually gets the game to a decent point. Here's hoping...

@Purplekjw One can argue that the number of subscribers does not equal the best MMORPG, but if we standardize the MMORPG experience and give each aspect of it a score [a score for customer support, a score for fluidity of game economy, a score for fun-versus-frustration, etc.] it would be safe to bet that WoW would score very high at the top, despite the fact that a sizeable minority feels very strongly opposed to WoW and Blizzard. Although the number of subscribers does not essentially mean that it is the best MMORPG in the market [after all, a lot of people see bad films], the fact that no other MMORPG is even close to WoW's numbers despite the market being so lucrative and ripe for competition can't easily be ignored or dismissed. WoW is doing something right with their franchise to continue to be that successful, and it would require some foolhardy logic to suggest otherwise.

@Purplekjw Ross is saying that, in terms of quality, UO and EQ are about on par with FFXIV. Which is to say that while those two games were successful for their time, they were released a decade ago and progress has been made in the MMORPG genre. If FFXIV was released ten years ago, it would no doubt be hailed as a triumph, despite its flaws, since the MMORPG genre was just in its infancy and no one can blame a company for producing a product with many flaws in a genre no one is sure how to approach correctly. But with the arrival of WoW and the way it improved nearly all aspects of the genre, there is no excuse for a company to produce a game that is seemingly stuck in the past and has disregarded all the improvements WoW has given to the genre.

buying out the competition: grandia 3, star ocean, dragon quest, radiata stories, odin sphere, infinite undiscovery, nier, and many others. if u look it up, u'll see that enix has developed very, very few games themselves. and, when square-enix merged, the ceo was the previous ceo of enix.

First, I'm only partially surprised by this. I knew that Square would be pe'od that it's flag franchise crashed and burned in it's latest outing but I also suspected that it was Square's fault for pushing it out the door too fast. It's not like people would have minded if you'd waited another year, XIII isn't even a year old yet. And quite frankly, Final Fantasy is falling off it's pedestal so they shouldn't have been surprised. That's not to say it isn't still the best RPG series out there but the RPG genre itself is failing and Square is actually currently failing to do what it does, innovate and reinvigorate, demoting it to the king of a small hill rather than king of kings. @Purplekjw I have to say (at least at release), WoW was the highest quality MMO out there. Of course, I'm assuming that by quality we mean how well the pieces work. It was possibly the smoothest launch I've seen of any MMO. Very very few glitches and errors compared to the rest of the market. That's not to say it's even close to the best. The game is TOO refined and it makes it rather uninteresting. But since the reason people play MMOs is (in selling point and technicality) is to play with others in an immersive world to which it delivers.

Kind of hard to totally change the direction of a game AFTER it's been released, but they might be able to pull it off. I'm hoping that this plus the lukewarm reception of FFXIII will push them back towards their roots. RPGs need an overworld map!
