Final Fantasy 7's Most Iconic Artwork Officially Remade

An Avalanche of nostalgia.

Square Enix is celebrating the 22nd anniversary of Final Fantasy VII's North American release by recreating one of the most iconic pieces of artwork for the game. The modern look is in line with the detailed visual style of the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake, and fans are sure to get a kick out of the treatment Square Enix has given the art.

Regardless of whether you're a fan of the Final Fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy VII specifically, or RPGs as a genre, you're probably familiar with the piece of art in question. It depicts the protagonist Cloud with his back to the viewer as he reaches for his sword. He stands facing the Shinra building, which can be seen towering above him in the distance. A cloud of thick black smog chokes the air above, while brilliant blue lights shoot out of the ground. All of this nicely captures the game's story of a small group of eco-terrorists fighting against a megacorporation to try and save the world they live in.

Now Playing: We Played Final Fantasy VII Remake - Hands-On Impressions

The remade artwork comes just six months ahead of Final Fantasy 7 Remake March 3, 2020 release date. Square Enix previously revealed the game will span two Blu-ray discs when it launches on PS4, and there will be a $330 Final Fantasy 7 Remake collector's edition available. At E3 2019, we got an extended gameplay and combat demonstration, and we recently got to more hands-on time with it too. You can see what we thought in the video above.

it will be 5 more years until you see what the world outside of Midgar looks like.

You'll be playing part 2 on PS5, and part 3 on PS6. Complete collection will be on PS7 for $200.

Wow two Disc? is like going back in time when I had some of my PS games that would use 2 and 3 disc to fit the whole thing in.

@angrycreep: I'm just amazed how the size of data is everyday increasing, as you said, back in the 90's - 2000's was pretty common to see games in 3, 4 and 5 disc's, save data was in kb. The memory card of the PS2 was of 2 mbs.

Now is becoming ridiculous, there are some games like final fantasy xv and gravity rush 2 and kingdom hearts 3 which save files are more than 600 mbs. Some games are also exceeding de 100 gbs.

Still not fan of what the did to the battle system.. but will most likely get it once all parts are released as one purchase, well short of there being demo before it released and I become instantly disgusted and turned off like I was when played the demo of FFXV, and only reason i got that was cause I got the whole game and all it downloads for like 8$ and I still can bring my self to play the game for very long, cause it just dont play like FF game to me.

In which case I will only get it when super cheap

@tsunami2311: Have you had a chance to check out the current demo at game shows? I didn't want to presume, thought I'd ask. I was also very skeptical, preferring the turn-based strategy of classic entries over the chaotic hack-n-slash of XV. That said, I got a chance to play the demo at PAX last week, and I have to say, I was completely sold. I thought the action parts of combat were very weighty and responsive, and being able to change characters on the fly for different strategies was great. Most impressive was the way they implemented the ATB system to stop time and scroll through your skills, magic, items, limit breaks and such. I thought it was a perfect homage to that classic turn based strategy, and it felt like those decisions made the most impact in battle, more than the action attacks. I felt they were mixed perfectly, and somehow it felt very authentically Final Fantasy VII, if that makes sense, and I came away very impressed with my worries completely gone.

@tsunami2311: I'm not a fan either, but I am keeping an open mind. I prefer strategic turn based of twitch based action RPGs. But I do like action RPG as well since the 4th gen, so I am keeping an open mind. Just hope they do not take out the cross dressing Harvey Winstein sauna bath scenes, be nice to have taken Barrett in there instead.

@tsunami2311: By the time the final part is released, George RR Martin might have finished his last 2 books.

Will not buy this unless it's higher than 90 on Metacritic. I've been burned far too many times by Square Enix.

@srfilk86: I predict 8.2 to 8.5. That's about the ceiling for a Square Enix game.

@srfilk86: A blast from the past being remake, that should be enough to get it regardless if the score is lower than a 9.0

@angrycreep: I still own the original game, so why would I pay for something like this if it's under 9/10 quality? If I want a blast from the past, I'll just play the original complete experience.

@angrycreep: eh... ffvii was mega thing because of the scale, the graphics, the depth.

now all those things have been far surpassed. yes the memories of vii will always remain huge like it does for the first aeroplane or camera, but really this doesnt seem to do a lot

at least with xv i was curious what happens during the next 10 minutes storywise

thats why remakes just arent for me. only if the original game was shit and they actually fix a game to be phenomenal
