Final Fantasy 15 PC Features Free Half-Life Content For A Limited Time

Carry on Gordon's legacy of smacking things with a crowbar.

The excruciating wait for a new Half-Life game carries on with no end in sight. If all you care about is seeing protagonist Gordon Freeman in a new setting, Final Fantasy XV may be just the ticket, as Square Enix has announced a new limited-time promotion involving the upcoming PC version.

Players who purchase Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition, the RPG's PC version, through Steam by the end of April will receive the Half-Life Pack. This will be distributed through the Steam Workshop and allows you to dress up as Freeman. There are three different components to this: the HEV suit itself, Freeman's glasses, and his signature crowbar, which can be used as a weapon.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Half-Life's Gordon Freeman Comes To Final Fantasy 15 PC

These items can be equipped in both the single-player campaign--letting you deal with the bizarre sight of seeing Final Fantasy XV star Noctis cosplaying as Gordon Freeman--or in Comrades, the game's online multiplayer mode. You can see what the latter looks like in the gallery below.

No Caption Provided

Square Enix has already released a benchmark tool to help you evaluate your PC's ability to run the game and announced the pre-order bonuses that are available. You'll be able to try out the game itself with a demo releasing for free to everyone on February 26, though the specifics of what that entails have not been shared.

Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition launches on March 6. That same day will see the release of the Royal Edition on PS4 and Xbox One.

@lonesamurai1: Not really, if Square understand the PC marketing for real, they would open up the game and allow players to modified it. Mods is the strongest suit of the PC marketing. And the things you read about the sales of this game are different than what I read, lol Square invested so much money into this game, the development hell and all that... Even if they sold 6 million indeed, that still means nothing.

@lonesamurai1: I don't disagree, but it depends of the theme, Bethesda selling point is the sandbox mechanics, so the more mods for them, the better. Now Witcher is more about the story, the literal role of the witcher and etc... So if CDPR give the community enough tools to drastically change the game, the main point (character driven focus) will ended up lost in the process. FFXV tried to reach a (coward) middle-ground between sandbox and a compelling story, it failed at both. And the mods will be just naturally limited by the game lack of personality.

@lonesamurai1: To use this kind of cheap marketing stunt, that's a clear sign of desperation. I agree that Gordon is the face of the PC platform... but his visuals feels out of place. Just like Assassins Creed, Tekken, etc.. And you can argue the intention of crossovers is just that, the shock value. It kinda is, but in FFXV it just look ridiculous. No fun, no shock value, not weird... Just dumb and desperate.

@lonesamurai1: Who said that? FFXV had underwhelming sales, Square expected more sales and the game didn't reach those numbers. Also, the eidos IPs they bought, Hitman, Tomb Raider, etc.. They all had underwhelming sales as well. Square is only alive because the japanese market sustain their efforts, especially the Dragon Quest series who is extremely popular there. You can feel desperation when you watch their reveal of the FFXV character that I don't even know the name, when they revealed him as a extra character for Tekken 7. The public reacted like zombies, they didn't cared, lol Square is forcing the issue, this is obvious. Most people disliked this game, but they are trying cheap marketing stunts regardless.

@gleencross: I don't know the sales figures, but it does feel as if Square Enix is pushing this game as if it's a game that has been one of the most successful in it's history, when the story and characters were largely forgettable. The game wanted to be a giant open world game but I was to explore and complete the world in about 2 weeks time and that's only play a few hours a day. They keep pushing out new content as episodes where I feel like I need to replay the main story just to remember it and understand how this extra content fits in. Also, sales numbers don't always equate excitement for the game or characters. I just think they're going to keep pushing out content as if this is an MMORPG, when it has a weak foundation and they should be sketching a new better story for the next game.

@rwmgamer85: "better story" is the key word indeed. For me at least, it makes no sense to play a rpg with bad characters and story. After all, we will be stuck in that world for what... 30 hours at least, maybe more? It's torture, to endure dislikeable character for dozens of hours it's just turture. FFXII was remastered recently and it is a nice example because that game also has bad characters, but the world building is pretty cool and the gameplay is so good, those factors eases up the situation. The world of FFXV is boring, the gameplay is boring, the story/characters are boring, etc.. but on a technical standpoint, the game looks good. That's why I compare FFXV with Crysis, because that would be it's destiny: a benchmark tool. Which is a goddamn waste, FFXV had potential to be really good. And Square want the mainstream public to believe the game was indeed good. Look how much copies we sold, look how cool our character is, he is in Tekken! Look how other devs wants to join us, etc.. In the end, deep down people know Square is simply buying their way, the offered money for Namco, Ubisoft, Valve, etc.. for marketing reasons. It's not the other way around, Ubisoft has no reason to join this boy band, much less Valve. They did it because Square made offer$ they can't refuse.

@gleencross: yeah I agree. And with RPG's I don't aim for trophies and it just got to a point where I was driven to platinum the game and be done. I've tried getting into these episodes and just can't. Reminds me of too much of a grind and the beauty of RPG's with good characters and stories are that they don't feel like grinds but rather you want to revisit the game's world as often as possible.

@rwmgamer85: yes, I agree completely, rpgs that doesn't make you feel the grind, instead you are just revisiting the world as often as possible, those are the special kind of rpgs. And luckily, this generation had Witcher 3, Persona 5, Divinity 2, etc.. great rpgs for every taste. With these kind of superior products available for the player, I see no logical reason to ever waste time with a game like FFXV, honestly.

@lonesamurai1: Fair, but it doesn't matter if they are building this from the ground up, the core of the product is still defective. Did you played this game before? I did, my friend has a PS4 and I experimented the first couple of hours... And it's terrible. You need extra material do understand wth is going on regarding the plot, there's some slight performance dips, the characters have no charisma whatsoever, the combat was streamlined to the point of button mashing, etc.. It is really not that good. You know what the PC version will ultimately become: this game is the new crysis. People will use this game for benchmarking, that's the sad reality. They had the PC development in mind and etc.. yes, that's why this will become the new crysis. From one of the greatest franchises in the industry, diminished to a benchmark tool. And you still think this is worth your time and money? Well... good luck. I played this franchise for almost 15 years, I don't think they deserve another chance.

@lonesamurai1: And that's the sad aspect, you are not expecting a great game. So what is the point? lol Square used to be a great developer, nintendo, sony, etc.. all fighting for their exclusives. Now look at their sore state, you will buy their games out of pity? Because they are supporting the PC platform, that alone is your justification? Also, to follow the media reviews like a lost and mindless sheep, this is also sad to see. But each one with their own taste, Square deserves to die, but at the same time they can still bring something that matter if they stay alive. Nobody really knows. The only thing I know is that for me, $60 for a benchmark tool is just too expensive.

@lonesamurai1: With this quote right here I'd give you so many high fives "I'd much rather buy this than some crappy multiplayer game that the whole world is going gaga for - Player Unknown, Battlefield, Overwatch, Fortnite- forget it" That's because the publishers go for the easy sell. The mainstream console casuals who cannot handle games with depth. It's too much for them. All those games you listed such complete and utter trash with no skill required. Single Player should not be a "feature" but thanks to hobbyists and trash (mostly on Xbone Sony and Nintendo still make real games) we have things like Battlefront 2 Pay to win. It's sad Gleencross blames Square Enix but it's the trash can kiddies who keep making this hobby worse. I'd confiscate so many credit cards from people in this hobby if I could.

@captainjordan: Everybody is part of the problem, you are not wrong, the companies tries the easy sell indeed. Just look at the "new" Metal Gear following the survival hype for example. Still, we can't defend Square in this situation, they are to blame. They took almost a decade to release this game, even so, the final product feels unfinished. How the hell can you defend that? imo the consumer can't feel "pity", these companies wants our money and souls dude, lol no reason to feel sorry about them. Divinity 2 and Persona 5 developed great single player experiences and the public supported them. This is a nice scenario, no sense of pity involved.

I'm so beyond caring about HL3, there are so many franchises better now than HL ever was. Sure, the first game was revolutionary, but it's time is long gone.

@gleencross: I don't, even with references, even if it's 'related' it's unique enough to be considered it's own thing. I think The Portal series hold on it's own more than HL at this point, simply because as of yet it's unsurpassed, even if I prefer games like Talos Principle or Antichamber I know they're not as 'wholesome' as Portal. Some people below though thought I was attacking their beloved franchise, I wasn't. I simply moved on.

@RogerioFM: I honestly think there's no fps with similar or superior level design compared to HL2. HL1, yes, that game got old. Even so, the mod/remake implemented the physics/puzzles and the multiple design layers of HL2 in the original setting. The narrative remains top notch, but we had great storytelling in other shooters as well. Now as design goes, it's weird considering how the tech evolved, but I don't think any other fps has the same fluidity. Bioshock is the closest one, Portal of course (but for me, this series is more a spiritual successor than anything else), maybe Deus-Ex? The industry don't actually moved forward imo, the level design remains limited for whatever reason.

@gleencross: I disagree completely, both games have some serious pacing issues, specially the second game's with driving levels, we have come far since then, from Thief to Deus Ex(Old and new) both provides superior design IMO. Also, not sure which games you have been playing when you say the industry haven't advanced in design. Levels like Dishonored 2, Jindosh's Mansion is proof enough.

Remember when Final Fantasy games didn't need any of this shit that completely breaks immersion from the game world you're supposed to be in? Remember when Cloud's only outfit was the one in his own story and you didn't have immersion broken by Cloud wearing Gordon Freeman's outfit? How ironic that the best era of RPGs by a huge margin were where DLC didn't exist... And even with this shitty DLC, Square-Enix majority of sales came from earlier FF games and the older DQ games. So basically these days they know they make shitty games and try to make DLC to milk even more money out of the actual fans instead of making something that appeals to even more people.

@Roman217: FF used to be good. If you analyze the story/characters of the most celebrated games, VI and VII, for today standards their stories just feels... normal in way, nothing extraordinary. VI has a much better storytelling, straightforward, etc.. But you see many cliches like the monomyth (the hero's journey), the outsider who ends up saving the world, the dark anti-hero, etc.. FFVII has a weird, clumsy and discombobulated story with a terrible main character as a bonus. I highly doubt Cloud would be popular if he was introduced nowadays, same goes for Aerith as a dead giveaway. So, Final Fantasy had it's time to shine, it's over. Plain and simple. Look how much Persona evolved the jrpg formula, their stories and characters feels modern with the same classic japanese weirdness.

@gleencross: I will agree that Persona is still good, but in my opinion that's because they stick to the tried and true turn based gameplay that SMT games are known for. The characters and story for P5 were really good too. But I do think FF6-FF10 would still be great if released today on DS. Same thing for Chrono Trigger. Radiant Historia is more modern, has a lot of the same cliches, and is a great game. If anything, these days, Random Sandbox Open World RPG #93 is way more cliche and that's basically what they did with the series with FF15.

@Roman217: Gameplay is not really the issue, rpgs can go back and forth with their mechanics, recycling turns, real time, action, strategic view, micro-management, etc.. you name it. The issue is more related to the overall story imo. After all, you have to endure these character for at least 50 hours, if they are boring and uninteresting, imagine the torture. One example you forget to mention is Bravely Default. And it's a good example for my argument, that game is as oldschool as possible regarding gameplay, but the story is nothing special. The characters are likeable enough, but that's it, it's only average at best. Persona have modern and neat characters, sometimes the scope of the story is kept to a minimum (like in P4, just a mystery tale and nothing else, you were not the savior of the universe). Persona knew how to evolve and still feel fresh, final fantasy is always about "let's save the world" or "kingdoms, politics, blablabla". It's the same shit over and over again. And androgynous looking character wearing leather is so early 00's and they keep trying to shove this stupid design/visuals. Even Kingdom Hearts, the character remains with the leathery full of zippers design. They can't get away from that even in a complete different scenario. Like I said, FF died. FFXII was the last good game in many ways, I don't think this series will ever recover. And Chrono Trigger is a different animal compared to FF, a far greater game imo

@Roman217: It's breaking the immersion of the game that ruins it for me. I'm trying to play in the world lore of this game, not other games. Might as well introduce commercials every 20 minutes of gameplay and introduce new cars to drive from NFS.

I'm not even hopeful (nor excited) they are going to stay within the lore of FF7 with the remake. Even worse, they will probably cut the materia system down, and reduce the summoning to only a few summons. The materia will probably require a microtransaction to unlock the next tier.

@lion2447: They will probably have DLC materia for summons from other games or things like that. Outfits for characters from other FF games is almost a given I'm sure since like all RPGs do that these days, and that breaks immersion for me. They will probably have like a gunblade model for Cloud's sword, maybe Tidus style sword, etc.

@Roman217: remember when FF game were actual FF game and played like them? I still refuse to get FFXV if i can get complete all addon dlc for like 10$ maybe I will just for sake of my collection, but the game play is utter trash to me. simply cause gameplay is NOT FF to me.

If the upcoming DQ game gameplay "westernized" and turned to shit like FF and dont have same type of gameplay I will be really pissed cause DQ is only thing left RPG wise that still played like DQ game.

And the FFVIII remake I waited 20 years for that and they are screwing with the gameplay, When it comes to DQ and FF I expect and WANT turnbased combat not this realtime hack n slash combat, If I want that I would go play GOW or DMC.

@tsunami2311: Dragonquest 11 is turn based so it should be good and you should definitely buy it to show square enix with money what you want since it's all they will really understand (I know I will). Final fantasy 7 remake however I won't be buying and recommend that fans of the original do the same. They are changing almost everything about FF7, the combat will be different, the story will be changed, and even how the game will release will be different (over time in episodic format)

@playstationzone: No! Don't you see it? Final Fantasy XV is the Half-life 3! The Combine is the Imperial, the Vortigaunts have evolved into Chobobos, Borealis and Portal techonology don't matter anymore when you can just teleport whenever you like, why hanging with Alyx when you have bromance? And G-Man (Gaben) finally achieved his purpose - more sales. This is a truly final fantasy we all have been waiting for!

Well shit. One more reason to buy 15 even though I have no intention of playing it yet.

@Daian: I'm kind of surprised no mod teams have tried to create Half-Life 3 themselves yet.

@Barighm: Making a whole game is tough... You can see by the amount of time that is taking Black Mesa to come out. But at this point I'd be happy playing a HL3 side scrolled...

@Barighm: Mod teams can't come up with original content, all they do are remakes and perhaps spiritual continuations.

The big thing here everyone is gasping at is the story. Sure it's easy to make a game where a guy smacks monsters with a crowbar, but it will probably be all different than what Valve would make.

Of course the "leaked" HL3 script could maybe push someone to try creating it pretty soon

Oh boy, here we go with all the HL insaniacs claiming this will lead to HL3...

This is so out of place it's transcended to good.

Weird. But cool. Gordon is kind of a proto-hipster, with his "Gordon don't care / he'll science your ass off" attitude and ironic outfit, so if he wants to hang out with these sassy kids, it works.

They should add the combine too, maybe it would make FFXV's plot a little more interesting. Heh
