Final Fantasy 15 Could Borrow Just Cause 3's Open-World Tech
Open worlds are tough to make.
Final Fantasy XV is still a long way off, but it's shaping up to be a huge open-world entry in the long-running series. However, making an open world isn't easy, and Square Enix is looking to help FFXV by borrowing tech from another upcoming Square game, Just Cause 3.
In a statement to GameSpot, Just Cause 3 developer Avalanche confirmed that the two teams are actively discussing how to utilize Just Cause tech to assist in work on FFXV. Although he couldn't provide any specifics, Chief Creative Officer Cristofer Sundberg told us that Avalanche's experience with open worlds might be of use to the Final Fantasy team.

"I can confirm that we are in talks with the Final Fantasy XV team over a collaboration," he wrote. "Like [FFXV director Hajime] Tabata said in his interview [with IGN], these talks are in the early stages so we are not able to give much more detail at this point, but we're excited about the opportunity. Avalanche Studios has become synonymous with huge open worlds. Like most gamers, we are also fans of the Final Fantasy series. If there is a way that our technical expertise and extensive experience of open-world game design can be of some help to the Final Fantasy XV team, then we're certainly open to that. I look forward to further discussions with them."
Last week, Tabata revealed to IGN that that the FFXV team was seeking to collaborate with Avalanche and utilize its tech. He noted the vertical scale of Just Cause games, and stated that he would like FFXV to have a similar level of verticality. "When I saw what the guys at Avalanche Studios were doing with Just Cause 3, what really impressed me was how they have that vertical element to their games and the technology they use to achieve that kind of thing," he explained.
Final Fantasy XV is slated for a 2016 release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and Just Cause 3 comes out on December 1 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Check out our coverage of FFXV's Gamescom event here. You can also read our E3 impressions of Just Cause 3 here.
