FIFA and Battlefield are EA's most profitable franchises

Online features and content downloads have made FIFA and Battlefield the two biggest revenue "events" in EA's history; EA's digital revenue up 40 percent year-on-year.

EA has revealed that its digital revenue has grown by 40 percent in its second fiscal quarter since the same period last year, thanks in large part to the content downloads offered for FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13, and Battlefield 3.

EA has high hopes for its FIFA and Battlefield franchises.
EA has high hopes for its FIFA and Battlefield franchises.

This week, the publisher posted its preliminary financial results for the second fiscal quarter ending September 30, 2012, in which EA president Frank Gibeau highlighted the company's strong digital growth and pointed to FIFA and Battlefield as EA's most profitable franchises.

"On the strength of our digital extensions, FIFA and Battlefield are the two biggest revenue events in our company's history," Gibeau said. "Both are well on their way to becoming billion dollar annual franchises."

The publisher also praised the performance of its sports titles, with EA CFO Blake Jorgensen revealing that the company is forecasting an annual growth of at least 25 percent with net revenues expected to reach approximately $4 billion by March 31, 2013.

According to the report, FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13 debuted as the two top-selling titles in September in the West. In its first four weeks, FIFA 13 sold 7.4 million units, excluding mobile downloads, a number that EA said makes the title "the biggest sports launch of all time." FIFA's digital revenue also generated over $115 million in the first half of fiscal 2013, including FIFA Online 2 and FIFA World Class Soccer.

EA's Battlefield 3 Premium service has sold over 2 million subscriptions to date, according to the publisher, and in the mobile space, The Simpsons: Tapped Out has reportedly become the top-grossing iOS game for the past four weeks, logging 2.8 million daily active users.

Other parts of the report revealed that EA's games and services for mobile have generated a 60 percent year-over-year increase in digital net revenue, while EA's Origin platform has registered over 30 million users, including 13 million mobile users. EA also revealed that Origin has signed agreements with 71 independent developers.

Battlefield 3 Earned it, they deserved it ... Battlefield franchise is the second billion dollars franchise after COD in fps genre ... Battlefield 3 online multiplayer offers an unparalleled experience, is not just a game is an experience ...

Their DLCs provides so many things that you can't get in any other fps game's downloadable content. Each and every Dlc offers a variety of gameplay, art design and so much interesting stuff that shows how much DICE is willing to return for our money.

That is why their Premium content appears to be much more successful that others like ELITE (in a shorter period). I will support Battlefield 4 with love, cuz they deserve it, and surely will dominate.

@Aria1368 How is Premium more successful than Elite? Elite has 10 million members. Premium has 2 million. Furthermore, Battlefield 3 dlc is guilty of everything that other games with abusive DLC practices are guilty of. There simply is not enough content to warrant its price. Furthermore, to say that Battlefield 3 offers an "unparalleled experience" when it comes to multiplayer is a bit misguided, as Bad Company 2 had a very similar multiplayer experience. In fact all modern military shooters have a very similar multiplayer experience.

@Sgthombre E3 2012 they've announced BF3's premium were over 1.5 millions, at the same time COD's PAID ELITE users were over ~ 2.3 millions. Everyone can sign for Elite, what i was talking about is, about their PAID SUBSCRIBERS not free!!! considering the amount of people who owns COD and paid for it's elite subscription in a longer period is a little more than PREMIUM players in a shorter period, proved that Premium was more successful, However i don't care about these numbers since none of that money goes to my pocket, but if you go check on websites like, "MP1ST" they've already explained and justified that why PREMIUM and BF3's DLCs are absolutely better than what COD offers....

@Sgthombre @Aria1368 Not defending either game, but I wonder how many of that 10 million were hardened editions. Also link where you got that figure from. Remember everyone can sign up for Elite, as some features are free. What BF3 has over CoD is not just maps, but in some cases new weapons...in BF3 case 20 new weapons so far, plus new dogtags (w/e that's worth), plus other Premium exclusive stuff. I didn't buy Premium as I didn't plan on buying all the maps, but Premium is worth the cost if you're planning on buying all the DLC. Elite?... You get some maps...

@myungish @toshineon Don't judge so fast !!! If DICE wants to be like COD and let EA to milkin' their frenchise, they would've make a yearly game but they don't .... just beccasse you hate on EA, it doesn't mean Battlefield 3's triumph has anything to do with EA will milking BF... i don't know how do you get that!!! but to me such statement/announcement make me so happy that DICE will be getting even more support as they grow cuz they totally deserve it...

@Aria1368 @myungish By all means, DICE deserves to be big, they've come a long way, it's just that, EA doesn't deserve to be a part of that.

@myungish Indeed. It's so sad too, because Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2 are some of my favorite games, I hoped the franchise would keep in the spirit of the originals, but no, it's dead. Rest In Peace.

@toshineon Interesting.

1943 is the only multiplayer game i've gotten into, other than FEAR Combat on the PC.

At the beginning of this gen I considered myself fairly new to FPSs, certainly modern console based FPSs so I've not had much confidence going to multiplayer.

I've been able to crack the 1943 nut eventually though. It seems simpler than most FPSs and so i've been able to get my head around it.

I've had a peak at MW2 and B3 multiplayer but they both seem jolly complicated.

I'm not really a fan of team-talk, although I am interested in playing in a team. I'm a lone wolf in 1943 and it'd be fun to have someone cover me once in a while but it;'s never happened. I can't bear to listen to people on their MICS, it just sounds like waffle most of the time. Having said that, FEAR Combat had lots of talk via typing and that was a lot of fun.

I'm considering hanging up 1943 for a while and venturing into CoD and B3 territory. Not sure how i'll go.

@davedrastic @Aria1368 @myungish It's kinda kard to explain, but I'll try. The old Battlefield games have a sense of teamplay that the newer ones are missing. It doesn't feel like people are helping you for their own good, but to help the team out. In BF2 thay had a very smart commander and squad system. One person was a commander, that gave orders to each squad leader who in turn gave orders to the squad. The squad leaders spoke directly to the commander and the squad member spoke to the squad leaders and each other. It made for some great teamplay and strategy from your teams side, but it's been taken out in the newer games. BF1943 is a little bit like 1942, but not quite the same.

@toshineon @Aria1368 @myungish I really like Battlefield 1943 - is that very much like Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2? I've not really got into to Battlefiedl 3 or Bad Company 2, although I've dabbled a bit.

Why do you prefer B1942 and B2 and not the others?

@Aria1368 @myungish I'm interested to know who "we" are. You can't be speaking on behalf of the Battlefield community, as most people that have played BF for a long time would agree with me. Oh, and why did you bring up Call of Duty, that a separate franchise. Apart from Black Ops, I haven't so much as touched a CoD game.

This is news? Go give us a story about Okami HD coming out today if you have nothing else to write about. Cause Okami is a tonic to EA's dumbed down poison.

@Rufus_the_rat A lot of these articles are just repeating some soundbyte that was released. There's no real journalistic input, it's just repeating what's been spoon-fed to them. Writing about Okami might require some creative input.

@tightwad34 Then it's also no different than a story about a new anti malaria drug that has the potential to help millions of Africans. Would such news also be pointless? While good, it is as irrelevant to me personally as I don't live in Africa as a celebrity's new haircut. Some gamers who study business for example, might be interested in how the gaming companies are doing. These news might also shed a light on what we can expect from EA and other companies and what's the state of the industry, etc.
