Fez sells 200,000 units

Indie developer Polytron celebrates selling 200,000 units of Fez, a year after its release on Xbox Live.

Multidimensional platform indie game Fez has sold 200,000 units on Xbox Live since its release a year ago, according to an announcement on developer Polytron’s blog.

No Caption Provided

Fez had a long and storied development. Initially announced in 2009 with a projection to be released the following year, the game was later pushed to 2012.

In February, Fez won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize award at the 2012 Independent Games Festival. Fish was also one of the developers featured in the award-winning Indie Game: The Movie documentary.

Fez is a 2D platformer built entirely using Microsoft's XNA tools in an 8-bit pixel art style. The game also adds a third dimension and lets players rotate the game world around the protagonist, Gomez. The game is expected to be released on PC on May 1 via digital distribution platform Steam.

This game was SO much fun... The "3D presented in 2D" concept truly changed how platforming works.

The developer said he was going to commit suicide if his game didn't make it, that's some commitment to your work.

@Ryuuken27 @vadagar1 Crytek is not an American company, hotrod. I'm sure you'll find something else to blame on American excessiveness, though.

My favourite game from last year. Reminded me so much of puzzle gaming from the early 90's. Getting out a piece of paper and scribbling down notes and drawings. And that soundtrack. Few games can evoke such feelings from its music and style. Kudos to you Mr Fish, you deserve it in spite peoples general dislike for you (which I never really understood).

@dribblesbarbax It probably has something to do with seeing him in "Indie Game: The Movie" where he comes off as a whiny, self-absorbed child. I'm not saying he is or isn't, but if all you know about him is what you see in that movie, it's easy to understand why people generally dislike him.

@brxricano @DarkSaber2k

The guy lost my respect after that issue with the Xbox patch. Thankfully I don't have an Xbox360 anymore, and even if I have it, I won't even buy this game. That asshole deserves to get punched in the face and his glasses stuck to his eyeballs.

@Carpetfluff Sorry I just don't see it that way. $30,000 (actually $40,000) to fix a bug that effected maybe 1% of all players. It probably would have been cheaper just to give the money back to the people effected. Except there is no way to prove it so you can't do that. I agree that Fish can be a d***, but I don't blame him for not taking the hit. Did less bug checking then they should have? You can bug check all you want, that doesn't mean you will find every bug. How do you know what Fish knew before he released the game? M$ is to blame here, just another example of how they are ignoring the indie scene.

@Carpetfluff

I can bet that if this guy go big, he'll be just like Activision and becoming a talentless hack that only cares about money. I can feel it. Unless he did something like helping a kid in hospital who wants to play Fez or help kittens, this guy will end up in the gutter one day as a has been one hit wonder. My gut feeling is almost never wrong.

@Xian042 @fog90 @brxricano @DarkSaber2k He knew that when he signed up; they did less bug checking than they should then said they couldn't afford to patch it. MS's policy may be harsh, but it's not like it was a surprise to him. Happy to take the customers money, but not happy to spend it so they could play the game they bought.

@fog90 @brxricano @DarkSaber2k I don't understand the hate for Fish over the patch issue. Microsofts policy is at fault here. something like $30,000 just to re-issue the game with a TINY code patch? Nonsense, this game was made by ONE GUY, not a megacorp developer funded by EA. I don't care how successful the game is, $30,000 is a huge hit for one person to take. Microsoft should have let him patch the game at no cost.

Nice to see. And then we have Square Enix, who are upset with Tomb Raider which sold 3.4 million units, in far less time too (and that's not including digital sales!). So the developer's here must be doing something right !

@GSGuy321 Millions of unit sold doesn't mean sht ,if you can't get back,let alone make a profit from, the amount of cash you invested.

Great news, I thought it sold more though. I loved the game and I hope the performance issues are gone with the PC release.

@sunbeam4 The bugs aren't bad, there are just slowdowns from time to time. For instance I will make a jump and mid jump the game briefly pauses like it hits 1fps and I am unable to control myself mid jump and I end up flying past where I was jumping to simply because I wasn't able to control during the performance hiccup Though the game is forgiving and I respawn pretty much right before the jump.

Also I am not sure if it is still an issue. I played it through from day one for the next two weeks or so. Any patches after the first month of release I haven't really played on so I don't know how relevant all this is.

Was a good game though those extra super hard mind bending puzzles were a bit much for me. Loved the platforming and easier puzzles though! Wish I was a patient, puzzle solving god so I could finish it some day. Good to hear it sold well.

It's always rewarding to see when an indie game does well.
