Louis Leterrier has been announced as the director for the next film in the Fast and Furious franchise, which will serve as a companion film to Fast X. Variety was first to report.

"We are thrilled that he will continue to work his magic in the director's chair," Peter Cramer, president of Universal Pictures, said in a statement. Given the circumstances, this quote and the announcement are both high praise--Leterrier replaced Justin Lin as director last May, a costly situation that came about suddenly in the middle of production.

Leterrier's credentials include directing The Transporter, Clash of the Titans, and Now You See Me, as well as TV projects Lupin and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

The Fast and Furious films have been a significant box office success for Universal, with over $6 billion in global box office earnings, making it the studio's highest-grossing and longest-running franchise. The fan following for the movies and cast has grown into one of the biggest of any active franchise, with a substantial presence on social media.

In Fast X, Vin Diesel and his family will face off against newcomer Jason Momoa, who stars as Dante, a man seeking revenge against the team after a botched bank job in the film Fast Five. The tenth title in the Vin Diesel-led series set to open on May 19. As the series continues to captivate audiences worldwide, Leterrier's directorial expertise is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the action-packed saga.
