Fallout TV Series Doesn't Have Nods To Buggy Bethesda Games, But Could In Season 2

"We talked about it a great deal," the showrunner says.

The Fallout video game series is known for bugs, glitches, and other oddities. For some people, it's part of the charm. Many are wondering if Amazon's upcoming TV series might contain a nod to this. Showrunner Graham Wagner said the team considered referencing this, but decided against it.

"I don't want to throw Bethesda under the bus and talk about glitches too much, but we didn't really want to... what I kind of call meta humor... there's no save game, there's no meta elements like that," he said in an interview with IGN. "We talked about it a great deal because one of my fondest memories playing [The Elder Scrolls II:] Daggerfall is a moment where I just bumped into the wall and fell off the map and watched the entire world fly away from me as I fell off. And it was just transcendental and wonderful."

Wagner said the team wondered, "Can we get this in the show?" The showrunner went on to say that Season 1 won't have any of this, but the door is open for Season 2.

"It's definitely on my mind as a concept. But yeah, we stayed clear of too many winks, too many, because like I said earlier, we really just want people to buy into this world and not sort of be pushed out of it, because a tall order," Wagner said. "It's a pretty crazy place and we just want to get people invested in that first and before we f*** with it too much."

Also during the interview, director Jonathan Nolan said one of the most challenging parts of making the Fallout show was finding the tone.

"I think for me, this is the closest i've come in my career to comedy and I would say the comedy here is there in support of the drama," he said. "I think finding that tone on the set every day, guiding it towards what we wanted the finished products to look like was definitely challenging."

The Fallout TV series will debut on Prime Video in April 2024. The show stars Walton Goggins (Justified), Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets), and Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) in leading roles.

Todd Howard, an executive from Bethesda known for his work on the games, is an executive producer on the TV series. The Prime Video series is canonical with the game franchise.

Amazon is also behind the upcoming God of War TV series. However, it's still early days for that project and there is no word yet on the cast, story, director, or any other particulars about it.

As for the Fallout game series, Bethesda has said it will make Fallout 5. However, that won't be until after The Elder Scrolls VI, so no one should expect the game to come out anytime soon.
