Fallout 76 Won't Be Available On Steam

Fallout 76 will be exclusive to Bethesda.net.

One of 2018's biggest games, Fallout 76, will not be available to buy on the world's largest PC game store--at least not at launch. A Bethesda spokesperson told PC Gamer that the upcoming beta and the full game for PC will be exclusively available on Bethesda's own website, not Steam.

"The PC version of Fallout 76, for both the B.E.T.A. and the launch, will be available only via Bethesda.net, not on Steam," a Bethesda representative said. Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines also tweeted about the Bethesda.net exclusivity for Fallout 76.

Now Playing: Why PS4, Xbox One, And Switch Cross-Play May Not Happen

In releasing Fallout 76 through its own launcher, Bethesda avoids paying Steam operator Valve its cut of sales. Still, it's a noteworthy move to skip Steam in part because the previous Fallout games were released on Valve's store.

Just because Fallout 76 won't launch on Steam right away doesn't mean it won't eventually come to the platform. As PC Gamer reminds us, Fallout Shelter launched as a Bethesda.net exclusive before eventually launching on Steam at a later date.

The Fallout 76 beta starts in October, though specific start dates for PS4, Xbox One, and PC have not been announced yet. A line on the FAQ page states that this will be the full version of the game, with progress carrying forward to the full release in November.

Fallout 76 launches on November 14 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Unlike previous entries in the acclaimed RPG series, Fallout 76 is an always-online, multiplayer-focused game, so it will be interesting to see how the community responds to this big change.

Looking ahead, Bethesda will make some Fallout 76 announcements at QuakeCon this week, so keep checking back for more.

I'm really really REALLY disappointed by this decision. Nothing beats steam, all the other launchers/platforms are utter CRAP, including Bethesda's.

In my case Bethesda is really lucky we decided to pre-order this game with a group of friends to play, or else I would have cancelled my pre-order right away! Yes, I'm that pissed. Game costs a freaking fortune! Is it really that much to ask to release it on steam?

I'm sorry did Pete Hines say "exclusive to bnet"?

I'm sorry but you don't just get to try to morph the name of your game service into Bnet.

Wow. Seriously it's a pretty shitty thing he did there, and he knows it.

Battle.net has been around forever (1996) and this is a travesty to the history of gaming imo. Total slap in the face of Blizzard, one of the most respected game developer/publisher of all time.

I might get some "dude you're overreacting". But I'm sure many people are with me on this.

I would say this is a bad thing. But, since I'm an OG PC gamer. And I have used some of the most horseshit launchers in gaming for decades. I'm really not bothered by this.

Fallout 76 sounds like a too-late-to-the-party entry into the Rust-style online survival genre that I could not possibly care less about, no matter how hard I try.

not only they avoid paying steam for the sales cut but they can avoid the negative comments in case the game has bug or just plain sucks, pretty much the same reason destiny 2 was launched on battle-net instead of steam

Doesn't bother me at all. I wasn't a big fan of Steam's almost monopoly to begin with. After that fiasco they pulled with paid mods, I liked it even less so, every time a company knocks them off their high horse is a good thing imo. Deflates their big head a bit each time it happens hopefully. Then again, this will be the first Fallout game that I don't buy anyway.

ROFL! Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. I really wasn't planing on picking this up because it's not a real Fallout game. It looks like another Elder Scrolls Online type scenario, where you lose the atmosphere that makes the single player so much fun. If it was on Steam though, every time I'd log in, it would be there to look at in the store. At sometime in the future, I might have been tempted to try it, but as they say, "Out of sight. Out of mind." Won't be tempted at all.

Bethesda Game Pass/subscription service incoming. Steam/Valve is shooting themselves in the foot for not being pro-active in seeing these things come to light. Publishers want as much money as they can get, yet Steam doesn't reduce fee's for publishers? I do not see Steam increasing in value from this point forward. Changes need to be made at the top of Steam in order for it to hold weight in a changing, dynamic market. There's also a giant elephant on the horizon called Google, whom are working on their own gaming system and whom will be seeking IP's as well as purchasing studios in the very near future.

But hey, at least the loss of revenue from Fallout 76 will force Valve to continue work on Left4Dead 3, Portal 3, Team Fortress 3, and Half-Life 3 or off-shoots of said IP's in order to remedy their bottom line.

@soulfulDAGGER: The number of games released on Steam has been growing exponentially since 2004. Over 7000 last year alone. You think one crappy, unpopular game that people are already saying they aren't going to buy anyway is going to be even noticeable to Valve?

Can I have some of the drugs you're taking? They sound amazing.

@perspective-1998: Can anyone tell me why they prefer physical over digital?

Name one thing a physical copy gives you, because I can name about 5 that digital gives you....no disk to break or lose, HDD space is cheaper than the physical space you are paying to house all of those disks, digital copies are usually cheaper and discount faster, if you have an internet connection then you can access your copy of the game regardless of where you are physically, and game returns are processed faster and with less hassle.

@perspective-1998: very few games worth of having a physical copy, also digital copies tend to get discounted after a 8 months to a year in the shape of GOTY edition with all included and most bug fixes

@perspective-1998: Nothing to physically make room for, sort through, or keep up with, preloading of games before the release date so that the game is available the second the release becomes official, no need to go to an actual store or look for a delivery if ordered. The list goes on. Who knows. Maybe none of those things sounds good to you but to a lot of gamers it's just more convenient.

@horizonwriter: Okay they are all valid points but physical copies are still the way to go imo for the following

- You can trade in a physical copy

- You can get RDR2 in a detailed metal case!!!

- You can take games round to a friends house rather than taking your entire console

- With physical you can have a stack of games in your room to look through.

- If you buy digital you can run out of memory

- What if you forget your account information and all your games are lost forever?

- You get to take the plastic of the box when you have just bought your brand new game

Surely all these reasons trump buying digital? (especially point 2)

Steam is terrible for patching games , shame they have a monopoly so they can force developers to accept their terms or risk oblivion, i would gladly uninstall steam if dota wasnt soulbound to it. Achievement seeking manchilds are going to go mental with this move.

I have the bethesda client since launch havent experienced a single issue.

@s1taz4a3l: Utter nonsense. The Bethesda client is some of the buggiest garbage clients out there. It STILL refuses to save my login information and I have to re-enter a password every time I boot it up.

Another time it bricked itself updating, and I had to do a full reinstall.

@Thanatos2k: Thats just your A/V interfering with the client, i been using webroot for almost 10 years and at the same time used the clients for games like neverwinter online, the ddo, lotro client and many others and experienced zero problems going from win xp to win7 to win 10 and yes... it took me sleeping dogs 2 to upgrade to win 7.... had to upgrade to 10 because skylake 8th wouldnt take win 7 lol

@wowgrandpa: It doesnt work, my pc woulndt even boot up with the mobo + cpu and sorry it was coffe lake ( 8700k) not skylake back when it launched. But have been using win 10 since then and it works just like i wanted it, now you can have an official dark theme on win10 that was enabled a few builds back that works amazing, now if only firefox gave the tools to the person that kept the mod ft dark alive to bring it to the latest ff.

I was on the fence about this game from the beginning; now I know I won't be getting it. Bethesda.net is not a good game client and I don't see that changing by the time FO 76 releases. I understand their reasoning; but still not a good move by them.

Good! No reason it needs to be on Steam. Just like FortNite does not need to be on the Google Play Store on Mobile.

One digital market store is insane. Madden19, Unravel 2, Fall Out 76 - and I'll keep choosing to stay off Steam if given the chance.

I thought Steam sucked right from the get-go, right when I bought a physical copy of F.E.A.R. 2 so many years ago and they wanted to attach the thing to a fucking account.

Will be getting a physical Xbox One version.

what is so horrible about it not requiring steam to run????

if you love steam running that much, just keep it running anyway.. you can even select "add non steam game" and connect it to steam yourself. so what exactly is the problem????

@wanderz: The issue is having to use their launcher in the first place. I would have no issue with publishers using their bargaining power to get Valve (or in other news, Google with Fortnite) to shift the cut in a more pleasing way, but taking it out on us is the wrong move. How many launchers do we have today and how many more half-baked ones do we need in the future?

@itswinter: it's an online only game.. 99.99% chance it would need to use a launcher if it was on steam or not.

pretty much all online only games.. mmo or otherwise use launchers.. as well as some that are not online only.

they launch, make sure the game is up to date and as the game itself starts the launcher (usually) goes away. if you click on the game icon and turn away for a minute or so as it load you probably wouldn't even know it had a launcher. (unless it needs to go thru a "select your server" screen, which is of course possible)

Alright I’m getting sick of these launchers. Origin, Uplay, Battle.net, Steam, Gog (though you can install separately) and Microsofts, Bethesda (ESO). My games are too far spread out.

I liked it back then, Steam was the only one around.

I still love Fallout so I’m obviously still getting it.
