What we heard: When Bethesda Softworks announced it was taking over the Fallout license in 2004, role-playing fans rejoiced. The series, which had been dying a slow death alongside its flatlining publisher, Interplay, was suddenly in the hands of one of the most acclaimed RPG developers in the business.

Judging by an interview with producer Todd Howard immediately after the purchase, Fallout 3 would be handled with much more care than it had been at Interplay. The latter publisher had closed series developer Black Isle Studios and stopped development of Fallout 3 in favor of releasing the tepidly reviewed spin-off Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel--the only console entry in the franchise--which was so hated by Fallout fans that it was nicknamed "Fallout: POS."

Though Fallout 3 was a no-show at both the 2005 and 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expos, enthusiasm for the project increased over the last two years. The surge in interest paralleled the avalanche of critical plaudits that fell on Bethesda's latest project, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, GameSpot's 2006 Role-Playing Game of the Year.

With the Xbox 360 and PC versions of Oblivion--both based on the Gamebryo engine--earning near-equal praise, the prospect of the currently PC-only Fallout 3 also being released for the Xbox 360 became tantalizingly real. So tantalizing, in fact, that the fact Bethesda refused to rule it out in a recent interview with OXM UK led to a spate of "Fallout 3 coming to 360" headlines on Gamernews.org, playfuls.com, and No Mutants Allowed.

Unfortunately, the majority of the OXM UK article is merely the author talking about the possibility of a 360 Fallout 3, which he (rightly) speculates would be both technically feasible and financially lucrative. For his part, Howard dodges the mag's questions. When asked about Fallout 3, he says only, "We started work in late 2004 with a few people. We only had about 10 people on it until Oblivion wrapped, but most of our staff is on it now."

Avoiding any mention of a platform, Howard continued, "We have pretty long preproduction phases on our stuff doing concepts, design, building prototypes, and such." He then dropped a tidbit more tantalizing to Fallout fans than fresh iguana-on-a-stick: "We should be ready soon to show it off, but we'll see."

Still, if Fallout 3 does come to the Xbox 360, gamers can take comfort that it won't be another half-baked console spin-off. Referencing the OXM UK interview on his blog, Fallout 3 producer Ashley Cheng spoke of how he "hated" Fallout: BOS, indicating a 360 Fallout 3 would (hopefully) bear little resemblance to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox misfire.

[UPDATE] The official story: Taking time out of a multicity trip, jet-setting Bethesda vice president of marketing Pete Hines got back to GameSpot. "Yes, we have said before folks are working on it and have been, but we won't say what stage it's in," he said. "In short, no, nothing's changed, no details, no platforms, etc. We give the same answers regardless of who is asking. It will be a while still until we unveil, until then we aren't saying anything."

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that anything official about a 360 Fallout 3 has been announced. Not bogus that the prospect gets gamers all hot and bothered.

I don't why there is all this: 'will it or won't it come out on 360?! I mean will it, gosh! Will it!? please please tell me!' . If it comes out at all you can pretty much guarantee it will be out on 360, The question is, as a PC CLASSIC will it come out on PC? Oblivion sold five times as many copies of Oblivion on 360 as it did on PC, although the PC version did do reasonable numbers. . So the question is firstly: Will it ever come out, and secondly: Will it come out on PC? . Not 'Will it come out on 360?'!!!

Please bring Fallout 3 to the 360! I would absolutely freak if this franchise hit a console with it's original gameplay elements in tact, (Brotherhood of Steel was an abhorration from hell), and especially on the 360!!!!

I was surprised to see OXM talking about Fallout 3 when I read it last night, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does come out on Xbox 360.

Fallout has the most stubborn, elitist fanbase in the universe. I hope Bethesda makes this game first person, TES-style just to **** them off. Get over it, guys. I played F1 and F2 and I'd like to see a sequel in that style just like everybody else, but that doesn't mean that I would rather let the series die than let a very competent studio make a new game on a new console.

Oh god...as much as I love my X360, Fallout is one of my most favorite old school RPG franchises of all time...would hate to see it get 'consolized' just so it would sell. I'd much rather not have a Fallout 3 and live with the memories that Fallout 1 and 2 provided me with...

Not all RPG fans rejoiced when Fallout was handed over to Bethesda. Many of us don't want to see Fallout 3 turned into "Oblivion with guns". They'll never top the original Fallout anyway (which is one of the greatest RPGs ever created). The last good Fallout game was Fallout Tactics. Turn-based combat is where it's at. Fallout 3 will most likely suck, but people who think games like Oblivion are good RPGs will like it, I suppose. I second what isahunt said.

Fallout BOS isn't the worst game ever made, in fact its actually not 100% bad. Unfortunately some of the best parts about it are the Fallout backstory and character types, and that is very sparse in the game. Certainly not the worst spin off ever, but definitely not a true FO game.

I would prefer to play a long game like this sitting on my couch. As a pc gamer whos started gaming with KROZ I was getting a hunchback and after I bought a 360 my posture has improved a lot. I also prefer console gaming now because not all console games are super limited japanese games like devil may cry and metal gear. another reason to game console for me is I work in IT so I can come home and sit on the coach. I guess my point is I love my coach as much as my pc games so make my pc games couch compatible.

" When Bethesda Softworks announced it was taking over the Fallout license in 2004, role-playing fans rejoiced" WHICH, FANS? The blind and stupid ones??? Bethesda to RPG is like plague to aristocrat. Bethesda wants nothing to do with Brian Fargo or anyone who was ever involved with FO1 or FO2. Bethesda will butcher this game beyond any recognition. This thorsen-ink guy apparently knows nothing about Fallout and nothing about fans of Fallout. HACK.

Well Oblivion was a hit, most critics choice for game of the year, and at the moment almost impossible to find as a new or used game, So its a pretty safe bet that it will be released on 360, money talks.

Finally, Microsoft is just landing more on higher-tier games on their system, thus making Sony obsolete in soon time because of its lack of attracting great quality games and its busting cost of the system!

"I think most of the complaints here have more to do with the PC vs. Console argument than about the actual games themselves. PC gamers like to think of themselves as demanding more complicated and cerebral games, but that's bull. It's an elitism thing." That's not true at all. Oblivion's UI is terrible. The only reason it's terrible is because it was co-produced for a system with 8 buttons and no mouse. The lack of control on a console controller caused them to screw over people with true control. It's the only part of the game that keeps it from being perfect. It's so annoying to scroll through those menus and have a single button open every menu. You should press "i" for inventory, "m" for map, and so on. Instead you have to hit "tab" then try to figure out which menu you want to open up based on the symbols at the bottom of the menu. It's tedious and it completely takes you away from the game and annoys the hell out of you. I'm aware that consoles make far more money but it's only because the average gamer is too stupid/lazy to make the effort to learn about PC gaming. It's really easy to just drop in a disc and turn the system on. You can't do that with the PC so people get scared and never try. Games for Windows will hopefully bring in a new crowd of people who were too afraid to try before.

The mere fact that Fallout 3 may or may not be using the Oblivion engine means nothing, I've seen top down shooters made from the UT2K4 and Source engines, side scrolling shooters made from the Quake 4 engine, a Thief-inspired one based off of the Doom 3 SDK. There's no proof that since it uses the Oblivion engine, that it MUST be Oblivion with guns.

If they haven't (I doubt that) Bethseda should consider the positive response to this, heck, they may have started the rumor. After all, putting MorrowWind on the original X-Box was a risky move but it paid off better than anyone could have anticipated by outselling the PC version by three-fold if I remember correctly.

"Heh. I'm amused by all the anti-Oblivion sentiment here. Oblivion was certainly not "dumbed down" from previous Elder Scrolls games. I've played them--they all had about the same depth of gameplay. I think most of the complaints here have more to do with the PC vs. Console argument than about the actual games themselves. PC gamers like to think of themselves as demanding more complicated and cerebral games, but that's bull. It's an elitism thing. PC gamers are going to have to get over it, because with development costs so high, PC exclusive games are going to be less and less common. It's already uncommon now for the big titles. More and more, PC gamers are going to be getting the same games as the consoles. I know, each platform has its benefits and drawbacks when it comes to controls for specific games (like RTS and FPS games). In short, Fallout fans should be happy they're getting a game at all. If a 360 version makes it more likely the game will happen, they should be happy. The choice is likely between a console port or no game at all. It's not what I would hope for, but that's the reality of it. " I rather not have the game if it turn out to be a oblivion clone. Fallout main appeal is the dark humour, voices acting, gameplay , NPC and so one. The NPC characters suck in oblivon and so does the voice acting. I dont see how Beth will sucessfully transfer dark humour into fallout. Thats not what they do. I bet they wont even hire Ron Perlman to do the intro voice!!

Who cares if its on the 360 if is still Fallout? What is Fallout? Fallout is SPECIAL. Fallout is turn based combat. Fallout is wry use of 1950s type nuclear propaganda. Falllout is having a game where you can not kill anything and still win. Fallout is having guys in black leather jackets. Fallout is power armor. Fallout is Dogmeat. And really its not Fallout unless you can do a called shot to hit a rat in the nuts with a plasma rifle!

The amount of old butt-hurt Fallout fans won't make a difference to the Fallout fans that have accepted change(such as myself) and new Fallout fans. Bethesda is definitely going to have this customer when that game comes out.

Now Lets not go ahead of ourselves and say Fallout 3 is ruined. We still have no 'hard' evidence that Fallout 3 will Oblivion with Guns. Because that would be just lame and I think Bethesda aren't going to do a mistake like that. So why not make a little comparison chart for Bethesda between Fallout 2 and Oblivion: Play Camera: Now Fallout's camera is from top corner like view, which works well for the turn based combat and manipulation of the environment, I think it's impossible to develop a turn based combat system with a FPS camera view. Character interaction: I find interaction with NPCs in Fallout to be something major and play a big role in the story and fun likewise. However that lacked in Oblivion because Oblivion was more of an action oriented game and NPC interaction was mostly for quests and training. Guns: An Fps combat for fallout could be fun for a little while (Deus ex) however that would both eliminate the camera and the combat system for fallout so that's a bad Idea. Pc Vs Console: A True Fallout game would fail on a console, simply because of lack for freedom, in my humble opinion I find a game pad really limits your freedom compared to a keyboard and a mouse. Sure force feedback is nice, but it's not worth it. Money talks: Sure Money is the root of all evil, but you can't blame someone for trying to make money for the greater good. As a Hardcore Fallout Fan, I appreciate Bethesda for Reviving Fallout, and if a console version has to be made then at least consider that is not the matter of a port. I think a whole different Setting/Engine will be needed. Why the Haters? Fallout Fans Have tasted bitter Games since Fallout 2. I mean Fallout, the BOS was so lame that it's a shame it carries the Fallout name. My Advice to Bethesda: Play Fallout, Fallout 2 and maybe even The Wasteland while you're making Fallout 3. Compare your notes and Aim for a Blockbuster that will prove that the greatest thing about Fallout 3 wouldn't be it's name alone. Good luck.
