Every Doctor Who is Playable in Lego Dimensions, but Only One Will Have a Voice Actor

A good man.

UPDATE 10.12am PT 7/9/2015: While Peter Capaldi is the only Doctor to record new dialogue specific to the game, audio from all of the previous Doctors (taken from the TV show) will be featured within the game.

In the same way that real-life Legos let you mix and match sets to create imaginative mental landscapes with impossible combinations, the Doctor Who addition to the upcoming Lego Dimensions game will provide a lot of freedom for how you mix, match, and interact with the time-traveling alien from the long-running BBC series.

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, we learned some new details about how the world of DoctorWho will integrate with the Lego game, and we also talked with the 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi, about his first video game role.

Highlights of the Doctor Who expansion for Lego Dimensions include:

  • All of the Doctors will be playable in Lego form, even the War Doctor. When your character dies, you'll regenerate as the first Doctor then cycle through the series again.
  • Depending on which Doctor you play as, the interior of your TARDIS will change -- playing as the first Doctor will give you an old-school, black-and-white time machine.
  • A jukebox in the TARDIS will let you choose whichever version of the Doctor Who theme you want.
  • Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who), Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald), and Michelle Gomez (Missy) will also lend their voices to game.
  • Other playable characters available for purchase as physical Lego Minifigs include a Cyberman, Dalek, and K-9.

While the Doctor Peter Capaldi is not a gamer himself, he is enthusiastic about the melding of pop culture and games: "I see it as a positive if it's done to this quality. The demands and the ambition that the game makers have imposed upon themselves are very high; they've given themselves the task of creating something that's very entertaining, very exciting, and dramatic. So I think as long as we're trying to make material to a high standard, then it is good. If we're just going to use these characters as marketing devices that aren't particularly thought-through or exciting, then no. But that's not where we are, and that's the really exciting thing."

You can watch our entire interview with Capaldi in the video at the top of the story!

Lego Dimensions launches in September for pretty much every console: Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U. In addition to Doctor Who, there will be several other pop culture and gaming properties that will make appearances, including The Simpsons, Portal, and Jurassic Park.

He is not a good man. And he is not a bad man. He is not a hero. He's definitely not a president and no, He's not an officer. You know what he is? He's an idiot! With a box and a screwdriver, passing through, helping out, learning. (okay, couldn't help quote an episode after reading the sub-title.)

It irks me that the title says every 'Doctor Who' is playable rather than just every 'Doctor,' but I'm just being pernickety.

@soulimatrix: Because it's a grammatical error. 'Who' isn't a part of his title. He was credited as 'Doctor Who' back in the early seventies, but nobody calls him that. It is simply 'Doctor'. The 'Who' is actually a question.

Slight disappointment we wont get voice tracks from previous doctors, but I understand the economics of voice work. Perhaps this is a potential sign/interest for a proper Dr. Who Lego game outside the dimensions setup, seeing that Lego only recently acquired the license..

EDIT: Seeing that they will have voice tracks from each doctor does make up quite a bit, heres hoping this pushes for that self-contained Dr. Who title..

A bit disappointed that there's no Matt Smith or David Tennant, but that wasn't very likely. At least Peter Capaldi is returning to play the Doctor and not some random VA. While I'm not a fan of Peters Doctor, he is very good at potraying the Doctor, unfortunately his version is written very badly and that isn't his fault. He has his moments though. But it's very exciting that Peter, Jenna (was in Xenoblade) and Michelle are returning as their characters. It wouldn't have been the same if they just hired random VAs. But I'm assuming some actors from other franchises will be reprising their roles as well?

My favourite Doctor was the one with the large coloured scarf played by Tom Baker.

@Archangel3371: AKA the fourth Doctor.
Mine is the fifth. Peter Davison. Though this is only for Classic Who. For New Who, I like a combination of Tennant (tenth) and Smith (eleventh)

Wish that they made a stand alone Doctor who Lego game. With 12 Doctors and over 50 years of history. There is more than enough for a Lego Doctor Who game. Tacking it on Lego Dimensions seems an injustice.

@Megavideogamer: Not necessarily. Think about it. You have all these universes melding together, and who better than the Doctor to fix it all. Although I do agree with you that Doctor Who should have its own set. I love this though. Batman meets the Doctor, and this particular Doctor in all his grumpiness just starts insulting him left and right and standing toe to toe with him completely unafraid. Epic!!!

His name is not "Dr. Who", it's simply "The Doctor".

I'm not a Dr.Who fan, but the "rotating through" concept is excellent.
