Escape From Mount Stupid: Wrestling Games

This week we enter the world of pro wrestling games and attempt to filter the slobber knockers from the low-blows. Can you dig it, sucka?!

The wrestling genre has been so monopolised and stagnant for most of the past decade that it's easy to forget just how many great games have been made. As Johnny and I researched in preparation for writing this episode, we kept coming across quality games we had completely forgotten about. People in the office would hear us talking about them and come over to tell their personal wrestling game history. I don't think a single person mentioned a wrestling game released this millennium.

Some of the best gaming nights I've had have been with the new WWE titles. A few years back, some of my childhood friends started watching pro wrestling again and inevitably got back into the games too. So now when I fly home to Ireland I'm expected to learn the latest game's control scheme in a matter of minutes and battle it out with a group of experts. More often than not I'm the first one thrown out of the Royal Rumble, but it never stops the experience from being fun.

Maybe that's the key to a classic wrestling game. Perhaps our fond memories aren't really about the games themselves, but rather the times we spent playing them with friends and siblings. Are wrestling games, like their fighting game cousins, primarily designed for local multiplayer? It's an interesting line of thought, but I'm not sure even a crate of cool beer and the company of my best friends could make playing Rumble Roses enjoyable.

I'll guess I'll have to test it out next time I'm home.

"Rumble Roses" was the beginning of every MALE gamers All-Female-Wrestling dream come through video game. "Rumble Roses Double X" capitalized on bringing Fappers/fanboys/wrestling fans everything we could have ever asked for in regards to an All-Female-Wrestling-Game. Akari Uchida Son (Producer) brought us 10 thousand frames per second, Godlike graphics that make the 20 Sexylicious Vixens "T & A" visuals stand out in amazing 3D action, and also allowed the player/players to rotate the camera with the ability to zoom-in and zoom-out of the delicious Catfight situations. Fantastic soft/hardcore Humiliation Finishers and sexually arousing suggestive submission holds that shockingly took titillation to the next level, have set the tone for this type of game.

"Double X" has an awesome "Queen's Match", Online Mode, Tag-Team and an amazing customization mode and improved photo shoot mode. You can even take sexy photos or non sexy photos and upload them online for everyone to see the fantastic match you were having. You could even download other peoples uploads from online and view them later. Playing Rank online were for serious competitors, like the serious wrestling fans, while "Player Match" are for Fappers/Fanboys, who can have fun with the Vixens sexually arousing Humiliation Finishers, Submission Holds, Killer Moves, Lethal Moves and normal moves without taking anything to seriously. However, private sessions are available, so players could still have serious matches either way in "Player Matches".

Customization Mode allows players to upgrade up any Rose from plain, boring, standard, skinny and boney to Sexylicious (Ultimate T & A form).

The media and gaming sites didn't accurately spend one hundred percent quality time playing through "Rumble Roses Double X", and ended up spreading the wrong perceptive about the game. Eventually, the media and gaming sites just copied each others reviews, and wrote elementary false reviews about the game. YES. The game wasn't perfect. A story mode would have been great, a tighter "Street Fight" mode would've been nice, but time was running out, and Konami needed to get the game out for release in time, so, yes, bugged "Shooter 1", etc., move-sets were left unattended, but hey it isn't a big deal. Just focus on the positive I wrote above in the first few paragraphs.

Everyone wants to sit here and pretend like they don't wrestle the dragon. I tell you truth. Every MALE has wrestled the dragon. If you say no, your clearly a liar. Medic Science says, it is healthy to dragon the wrestle at least 2-3 times a week. "Rumble Roses" series is great for that, and great for relationships. I can't wait for "Rumble Roses 3D" for PS4/Xbox One.

Wrestlemania on N64 was just the bomb. we spent HOURS changing ALL the wrestlers names and nearly died twice laughing at Mick Folley running in to the ring with the name 'Dude, where's my sock' or Steve Austins 'Stone Cold we bossed him!'

no wrestling games for pc, thq must release a version for PC. if they don't want to release because of piracy they can release a simple version but either way we PC gamers need a wrestling game. The last time I played on PC was wwe raw 2000

I enjoyed the Nintendo 64 wrestling games WWF Attitude, WWF War Zone, WCW Vs NWo and WCW Mayhem. Somehow The N64 suited wrestling. I later played Smackdown VS Raw 2008 on Xbox 360 and WWE Legends of Wrestlemania on Playstation 3. But they just are not as fun.

I never, NEVER understood why "pro" wrestling ever became popular, or why boys and men enjoyed watching buff dudes in tights grapple each other...... I mean, that's really weird.....

I remember playing WCW vs the World for months with my friend and my all time favorite is definitely WCW vs NWO revenge for the N64. "Here comes the pain" for me represented the best iteration of the "smackdown" generation and I believe truly the last good wrestling game since.

Honestly, I tried 2011 hated it. Tried 2012 and felt that it was alright in exhibition mode, but in career mode you got slaughtered (even on easy). So for me the best wrestling game of the current drop was 2010.

WWF No Mercy was easily the the last good one I played. No button mashing, a feeling of ring tactics and there was actually some damage as in you or opponents start moving and getting up slower depending on how beat up you were. And the gameplay mechanic was awesome. The Yukes gameplay engine has always sucked and just felt loose. It leads to button mashing and matches like the Royal Rumble and Money In The Bank just feel like a tiresome struggle.

Def Jam stands out in my mind as a great fighting game rather than wrestling, especially FFNY which was awesome. Personally I think that Wrestlemania for Gamecube was pretty good, I remeber sinking in hours and hours into that game when I was younger. LIke Danny I dislike the current iterations when playing alone but it is very fun when playing with friends, even if it can be frustrating when your character doesn't do what you want.

Hey Danny, you didn't mention WWF Wrestlemania from Acclaim - the only wrestling game I've ever played - in mid 90's it was the best. Why it is on the cover of this episode?

I read the article because I saw SNES Wrestlemania the Game, it reminded me of my childhood friend and all the times we rocked that game on the weekends in elementary. I'm no longer a big wrestling fan, but there is no denying the fun I had as a youth playing the games and I dont remember the game very clear, but the fun we had I do

I was a little surprised that he didn't mention WWF Wrestlemania the Arcade Game for the SNES, especially cause it is the box art in the banner for this video on Gamespot's main page. It was a really fun game and the first wrestling game I ever played. Also major props must be given for his "competition breeds innovation" part. That is exactly why Wrestling has gone to squat in recent years, both in games and as a form of entertainment. Love these videos.

I remember when Scott Steiner was with his "brother", Rick Steiner. He had long hair, and his special move was the "Frankensteiner" (a luchidor type move). Later on when a friend showed me the latest WWF N64 game, I had no idea that "Big Poppa Pump" was the same person. That was TONS of steroids & quite a haircut later, lol. Crazy.

All of the AKI games (WCW & WWF), but WWF: Mo Mercy was my FAV. I quit playing wrestling games when they went to Yuke's crappy engine, and away from AKI's engine (as The 1st Def Jam game was better than any Yuke's game to date. Never played Def Jam:FFNY).

@twztid13 I co-sign with everything you stated 100%. Take it from me, you have to play DJFFNY. Its the last great game from AKI, you'll love it. Its pathetic how Yukes run the era of great wrestling games in the ground. Totally destroyed it. So if u can play DJFFNY, and let me your take on it.

I really want to, and I saved my GC controller so I could at least play it on the Wii eventually. Hopefully, I'll get it soon, but I definitely plan to play it. I'd love to let you know what I think when I do. I'll friend/follow you here & tell you my thoughts. I waited so long cuz I was thinking they were gonna change the formula (as they did with the 3rd Def Jam game that they crapped all over). WHY did devs stop using that engine? WTF!!?!.

Awesome! I loved the Rumble Roses bit! :) Fire Pro will always be my favourite! I remember rockin it on the GBA FINALLY after reading about the series in import magazines for years. Finally playing Fire Pro D is one of my favourite videogame memories of all time! Going through the Kings Road mode and hitting all the different promotions with your selected wrestler or team was amazing! I never got sick of the Vader/Don Frye/Kenta Kobashi/Toshiaki Kawada team and the non-stop stream of CRITICAL!s that would follow! :) The AKI, N64 games are second overall for me. GIant Gram and King of Colosseum were also a lot of fun. Giant Gram 2000 was such an awesome game, I'm really surprised Sega never did anything more with the GG engine, it was really unique, and it was SO rewarding pulling off your ultimate finisher only with perfect timing and the right lead-up of moves (Misawa's Tiger Driver '91 or the Emerald Frosion!)! Oh Dreamcast, you were so awesome :( I'm not a fan of the SD vs Raw games, and haven't followed the soap opera for years now, but I'm holding out hope that there will be a game developer with the cojones to put out a great wrestling game with no-name wrestlers some day...

@GodGundamNT1 - Saying the WWF or WWE made its debut / came into its own / had a reboot doesn't mean he thinks they made the games themselves, it's a reference to the franchise. It's exactly the same as saying Uncharted made its debut on Sony consoles. Where the word ported is used in the video, it means the game in question came out on one platform before the development team worked on bringing it to other consoles and / or computers. Do please sit up and listen before calling anyone an idiot.

This guy, Danny O'Dwyer is an idiot he claims that the "WWF/WWE" made those games and that games were "ported" he has no clue what he is talking about and he is abusing the word port. Try to be more informative instead of misinforming gamers and give credit to the actual programing dev teams and publisher who went and made those contracts with what was then the WWF (WWE) to make those games possible.

Personally, I Prefered the Attitude era days in WWF/WWE. But the fact is I still love the games, and I still watch the Shows. While the story is corny and just unnecessary, I still like to see the fake action going on. I heard that WWE 13 is going to focus on the attitude era, so I am really interested in that.
