EA's Latest Free On the House Game Now Available

Grab another free game from Origin.

EA has rotated in a new game to Origin's free On the House promotion, and it's another isometric game from the early '90s: Ultima VIII: Pagan.

No Caption Provided

Specifically, you'll be getting the Gold Edition of Ultima VIII, which usually sells for $5, for free. It was originally released back in 1994 by Origin Systems, the now-defunct developer co-founded by Richard Garriott and best known for its work on the Ultima and Wing Commander series. Ultima VIII is the second-to-last game in the main Ultima series.

As with previous On the House games like Syndicate (now back to costing $5), Theme Hospital, and Dragon Age: Origins, this is the full version of Ultima VIII, and you'll be able to keep it forever. You can download it now through Origin.

@wafflefalaffle: Kind of my thoughts exactly. I mean, you can't say no to free stuff and I guess they get some kudos for that but it isn't like they're being extraordinarily generous here. We're certainly not in Playstation+/Xbox Gold territory here.

@BeefoTheBold@wafflefalaffle: Except on Xbox and Playstation you are paying $50 a year to the play the games and lose the right to play them if you stop paying. This is 100% free. You download it and it us yours forever, no strings attached. And they have definitely given newer games as well. I know they've given games in the Dragon Age and Dead Space series away in the past, and I'm pretty sure I have a couple Popcap games they gave away. They do a mix of classics and newer games.

@Setho10:
No one should be paying for this; should have been declared abandon-ware ages ago. To give you some perspective, the Playstation 1 did not exist when this game was released.

They gave away Dead Space, that was a nice freebie - the rest of the stuff they've given out have been bargain bin 99 cent specials. This game belongs in a collection though, it was a rare treasure back in the day.

Not to sound ungrateful, but i'd really like it if one of these free games weren't over 20 years old. Maybe give us a Mass Effect once in a blue moon.

I feel like the only time I launch Origin is when they put out new freebies that I redeem and then never play.

@Slim_Lyrics@Spitznock: I'm sure there is a forum somewhere that can help you close the game. Having your system frozen into playing it is the only reason I can imagine for this statement.

@kalibore: Expecting them to give away a newer game for free is just naive. However evil and greedy EA is, they know how to make money.

@unreal849: I despise EA for what they've done to gaming, but EA has never pulled anything near as bad as what Valve tried to do this week with modding on Steam. Weird that there's still so much hate about them after this week. We need competition against Steam to keep them from having power over gamers, and Origin is their only real competition since GOG doesn't sell many new games and they don't even have Galaxy up and running yet.

@thegod@unreal849: Obviously it's a matter of opinion, but I feel what Valve did is nowhere remotely close to the things that EA has done. Valve made a poor business decision, it was horribly received, they fixed it within days. EA has nickel and dimed gamers to death, bought up and shuttered many great small developers, ruined franchises, etc. Not saying Valve is perfect, but I think they are a lot better than EA is (but I'm a horrible person and still buy EA games, anyways).

@isv666@thegod@unreal849: I'm done with EA franchises, I think. Dead Space is ruined, while Battlefield is driving itself out of relevance. Mass Effect 4 is on the horizon, but after 3, I'm struggling to give a crap. They're pretty much re-setting the series anyway, so it won't be the ME we know and love(d).

@Saidrex@thegod: Not sure if I can believe "good intentions", given how lazy and cynical the implementation of the paid mods was. They basically just plugged in passive income for Valve and Bethesda with zero concern for the modders and end users.

@unreal849: thing is - they didn't know what the hell they were doing and that was their biggest mistake. They didn't undertsand how much problems it would create.

The cynical part is when Gaben thought to himself "I'd really like it if, every time someone downloaded a mod, I got paid"
