EA reorganizes post-NBA Elite cancellation

EA Canada GM Moira Dang parts ways with company as EA Sports realigns internally.

There's little doubt that the cancellation of NBA Elite was a black eye for the EA Sports brand, both metaphorically and financially. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter estimated the elimination of the game cost Electronic Arts up to $60 million. There's also the not-so-small manner of prestige, since rival 2K Sports' NBA 2K11 was the sole pro basketball sim on the market this year (although EA's NBA Jam scooped up some arcade-style gamers' dollars).

NBA Elite 11's cancellation apparently sparked big changes inside EA.
NBA Elite 11's cancellation apparently sparked big changes inside EA.

One result of the cancellation was a series of layoffs at EA Canada. Now, according to a report on 1Up, one of the positions apparently eliminated was that of EA Canada's general manager, Moira Dang, who has apparently parted ways with the publisher. Another was that of EA Tiburon head Philip Holt, who is "considering other options within the company," according to an EA spokesperson.

Speaking with GameSpot, an EA spokesperson offered the following statement:

We're making organizational changes to our development team at EA SPORTS that will be better for the franchises and better for our people. We continue to proactively evolve our team to better position ourselves with improved product quality and growth in revenue for our shareholders, to share technology and lower our development costs, and to pioneer new innovation in digital experiences for our consumers.

As part of this transition, we have eliminated the site-based GM roles at EAC and Tiburon. Moira Dang, GM at EAC, has decided to pursue new opportunities outside of EA and will be leaving the company. Philip Holt, GM at Tiburon, is considering new options within the company.

There are now a number of GMs leading Strategic Business Units within EA Sports. These report to Andrew Wilson, SVP of EA Sports who is responsible for the EA Sports development organization.

I don't care if EA doesn't release any NBA game for ten years, if they build a game better than the NBA 2K game, I am still going to buy it.

Hopefully, a new group of teams can create a challenge to the 2k sports game monopoly. Competition = best!

This is the beginning of the end of EA basketball sims. They'll come out with another game next year but that wont help cuz 2K11 already has them beat & next years version will only get better. Now if it doesnt improve it'll still outsell EA's game cuz of the cancellation. This cancellation really hurt EA.

EA is going to keep losing money because gamers hate the fact that they are buying up game developers slapping together crappy products and selling them as unfinished so they can later make you purchase DLC. NBA Live 2K beat their release date and offered more of what gamers wanted thus providing EA with a well deserved ass kicking! Now walk away with your tail between your legs and pick on a small developer to make yourselves feel better!

Ouch. Canceled after copies already manufactured, sent to retail, and bought by customers. THAT is big.

Yeah, I think if somebody lost 60 million for my company, there would probably be some personnel changes. Funny thing is I don't imagine they'll have much problem finding a job someplace else. Nobody seems to care about anything any more.

Ya, make the chain of command larger as to create more confusion and misunderstanding among bosses and employee's, which will churn out more games with added pressure. That sounds like a winner to me LMAO.

Finally EA got a taste of reality in the sports genre. Maybe its time the learn to compete with companies rather than throw money around. I wanna see another NFL licensed game, FIFA has shown great strides so whoever goes up againt it (PES isnt even on par anymore) has a lot of work, and I want my damn College Hoops back. Thanks EA for killing off college basketball games.

This may be a good move for EA, not that they make many lol (and not for them in the near future but),. To tear it up and throw it out and start it from scratch (with more knoledge of tech now, and a new fresh look at things,) may be the way. Even if it takes time.

NBA Elite 11 is probably one of the worst games in sport's gaming history, I remember when I used to play Sega's California Games... That was the sh*t back in the day. How did they come off so wrong with all the technological stuff we have today? Well, 2K at least finally caught the magical secret for basketball games, can't wait to see how 2k12 will be like ^^

i have a copy of nba elite for the ps3 and it sucks, it may have gotten canceled but that didnt stop people from uploading the game to the internet. gamestop had copies but wasn't allowed to sell them and if you played the game or the demo, then you would understand.

I also would like to add all these people that whinge and whine about EA Sports having the licenses, if these 2k and other sports game were/are so great, why do they need the licenses? I dont know about you guys, but id much rather play a great game without any licenses than a crap game with them. It just goes to show how fickle people are in the end.

Well, at least NBA Jam is working for them in the Arcade Basketball genre. but NBA sim games? Not so great. NBA Live 10 was a good try, but what happened to NBA Elite 11? Yup, they tried to reinvent basketball with new controls and those sucked. When I downloaded the demo, it was already a failure. All that I can give to EA is a thumbs up for trying to make a better NBA game and I hope they can get their act together and make a stellar NBA game that can beat NBA 2K.

Yeah exactly, FallenOneX has hit it on the head. Too bad for EA that they haven't been able to nail down the exclusive NBA rights, like the travesty they have in all the other sports (sarcasm). If there is any justice in the world, all the other EA exclusive licensing deals will come to end in the near future (with recent Supreme Court rulings with the NFL). One can only hope so. My only fear is, while I do like 2K Sports, I don't want NBA 2K to be the ONLY b-ball game out there, because they will probably get complacent. Well, they haven't done this before, but competition is always a good thing (unless you ask EA).

@djwood84 - You realize that they probably canceled it because they "couldn't get it right". This is one of the most respectful things EA has done. They chose to not release a crappy product and took a major financial hit because of it. I salute them for this.

Maybe im in a minority but I have felt that EA Sports have been getting alot of things very right lately. Madden 11 is very well polished and great fun, NHL 11 is the best hockey game ive ever played, FIFA just keeps getting better and better, I was looking forward to buying my first NBA game since 98 just because I think EA Sports have been producing awesome games lately. On a side note, the people that keep having a go at yearly editions, obviously dont play them seriously, its very easy to noticed the changes that have been made, and all the improvements. If you dont like it, dont buy it every year, its no different to buying the next big shooter title, except that theres only 1 sports game each year and there is a shooter every month or so. You can't whinging about the games not being inivative, because the sports them selves dont change.

For me, the worst part of all of this is that now I have to pay $50 for a game that was supposed to be a free add-on. Online play is the only thing that keeps me from buying NBA Jam for the Wii instead.

I almost had respect for EA when they delayed NBA Elite to "get it right." Then they canceled it. How am I not surprised? EA sports is a joke, they didn't want to compete with 2K in the NFL so they stole that for themselves... competition breeds creativity, but its not about creating anything other than money at EA. Boo, hiss, rabble rabble rabble!

Wow, did not know that got canceled. Should be a lesson for their sports division. And NCAA 11 is a really good game, but it could be better and still does not have features that were in the previous generation of consoles.

I am not bashing EA Sports here, but seriously, I cannot think of a time where their NBA titles were better than 2K. Up until this generation, I was neutral with them both, because they were both great....now this generation rolls around, and they killed a great series. I hope Elite will be good if brought back next year, though until they show they are about the best sports simulation possible, I cannot, and will not buy a single one of their games. NHL is about the only series from them that is great year after year.

I feel bad for them; I loved the NBA games, but NBA 08 has been gathering dust for years. The last time I played was about a year and a half ago, with my cousins, who came over for the holidays. It disappointed me a bit. I hope this gives them motivation to make the next game better.

I only hope that this report can give some closure. A canceled game amounts to pure losses through-and-through - especially at NBA Elite's level of development - and not just shareholders would be angry. That said, I am waiting for the schadenfreude-laden comments for this piece of news.
