EA layoffs hit 1,000, Black Box 'consolidated'

[UPDATE 2] Publisher widens staff reductions to 10 percent, will reap $120 million annual savings; Need for Speed Undercover studio moving in with EA Canada, label will remain intact.

The day before Halloween, Electronic Arts spooked its staff by announcing it was laying off 6 percent of its workforce. Last week, it alarmed analysts by announcing--without revealing any specifics--that its annual earnings would fall below expectations. As a result, it was expanding its layoffs and canceling future projects.

No Caption Provided

Today, the company announced an expanded restructuring that will see EA increase layoffs to include 10 percent of its worldwide workforce. The 1,000 pink slips will be sent out by March 31, 2009, and will encompass the "consolidation or closure of at least nine studio and publishing locations," according to EA.

The restructuring will both cost and save money. After incurring charges of $55 million to $65 million as a result of severance packages and other reorganization-related expenses, EA anticipates an annual savings of $120 million.

Analysts blamed EA's troubles on the underperformance of several games, such as Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, and Need for Speed Undercover. Little surprise, then, that one affected location is Undercover developer EA Black Box, which will be closing its office facilities. (In an ironic footnote, Black Box's official site still bears the tag line "Growth...and lots of it!") The staff of the Vancouver-based shop, which is currently working on Skate 2, will be relocated to EA Canada's offices in the nearby suburb of Burnaby. However, an EA representative told GameSpot that the studio name will remain.

"This does not mean that the Black Box studio is closing," said the rep. "The studio is moving to our Burnaby campus to share the facility with EAC and other EA teams that operate out of our state-of-the-art facility. We will operate two distinct studios, each with their own distinct culture and teams, out of our Burnaby facility."

EA said that Black Box's expected move date is June 2009. The rep also said that the studio's games would follow as well, but declined to comment if any were being considered for cancellation. "[We've made] no announcements regarding franchises," stated the rep.

In the initial news release, EA also issued the following blanket statement outlining how it will examine each of its series' viability: "EA is implementing a plan to narrow its product portfolio to focus on hit games with higher margin opportunities. The company remains committed to taking creative risks, investing in new games, leading the industry in the growing mobile and online businesses, and delivering high-quality games to consumers."

I feel the release windows for a lot of games are too close, especially since we are in the holiday season; and that goes double for people who own multiple consoles, there are a lot of games people want, but that does not mean they can afford them.

Game development has become expensive business. and, frankly, if you want to see a quality game, the dev will need to throw in multiple millions into their game projects. Do u honestly think that ppl can create GTA4, dead space, ... etc with just a couple of millions? LOL

Well obviously Dead Space would under perform EA, maybe if you did some advertising for the stinking game you would've sold more copies. The game is great so hopefully the people who got laid off will find a better company to work for.

Kinda sad that when EA develops an original IP (Mirror's Edge, Dead Space) nobody buys them. I guess this means more license stuff from EA and no more original games.

That sucks for those workers. I would really like to own the new NFS and Dead space looks good too but with money being so tight I don't see that happening for a while.

Everywhere I read Dead Space was performing decently. Maybe publishers and shareholders should stop dumping an absurd amount of money on game development, so they don't have to sell millions to be considered a success. If there's one thing that might hurt the game industry in the future is the unrealistic expectations of people that understand nothing about the medium and just come aboard for the easy money.

I may be wrong on this, but I just cant help but wonder if the money part is more due to greediness of the board members and shareholders than the actual performance of the games and properties. I like both Dead Space and Need for Speed. Again, I could be wrong, but it seems to me they probably did fine, but EA is upset because it didn't make them twice as much money as the year before. It seems like companies like this aren't happy with their millions if it isn't doubled every year...

Just glad EA didn't get a chance to gobble any one else up before they decided to downsize.. kinda ironic? Also I call BS on Deadspace "under-performing", I heard it sold well, and really what expectations did they have for it? It was a new IP in the horror genre, it could have done MUCH worse. Mirror's Edge did get a little too hyped before it came out though; but they shouldn't have "bet the bank" on new IPs, they should rely on well known franchises for their paycheck funding and hope these new IPs catch on to make them extra profit to grow.

Black Box has made some pretty great games and is easily one of the most successful branches of the company. The people at EA are fools to shut it down and not a different, less successful branch.

No more Black Box? Does this mean that Skate 2 is potentially the last GOOD Skate title in the franchise? It's really the only game I'm excited for this upcoming year so far, and in my eyes will be the first great game of 09. I was really hoping to see future iterations of the franchise in the same spirit, but now, only time will tell what they decide to do with the franchise. It's such a shame they're closing down. Black Box is the best. Scott Blackwood and Cuz definitely have more of a connection to their user base than a lot of other companies do, and it's simply a shame that they have to shut down.

You know, for once I like something that an EA exec had to say: "The company remains committed to taking creative risks." However, I feel bad for those who are losing their jobs. And waht's this? Dead Space had a poor performanc? That's a real shame. That was an EXCELLENT game!!

ONS47, I know not to give EA credit for it, but I know they'll be spitting the next Mass Effect out for Bioware, and I'm just hoping the money EA has will constitute more trouble shooting in development so ME2 will hopefully run a little smoother than it's predecessor.

i wouldnt give them credit for mass effect, but they have made some good games and original IPs its not like their going out of business, the EA brand is just slapped on so many titles that its bound to get a bad name for its mistakes... maybe now theyll practice quality over quantity

People need to stop thinking they're "hip" by bashing EA as well... the NHL franchise is the best thing since sliced bread and the majority of the games they've popped out of the oven lately have been fabulous, I'm really just waiting on them to continue the Mass Effect series with less glitches.

EA is improving its offerings, by investing in new lines (I bet no publisher other than EA will dare to release Mirror's Edge).Dead Space is a bet to capture Bioshock, but I don't like them both. NFS have lost to Burnout miles away. Perhaps EA can start on more traditional genres to boost profits than cross-genre games. C&C proved that returning to the roots will sell better. (Battlefield 3, SimCity 5 will definitely successful, or at least I will support)

I can see why Mirrors Edge didnt sell, but I am outright shocked that Dead Space didnt sell, it was one of the best games fo the year imo, and it seemed like it was pretty set to be a success.

Well.. NFS Undercover wasn't the greatest. Mirror's Edge is a niche game. Itw won't appeal to everyone, even those it's a great game. I have no clue why Dead Space didn't sell better. That was definitely one of EA's better titles. NHL 09 was also great, but NBA Live 09 and Madden 09 was pretty much the same stuff as before. Even though EA DNA feature in NBA Live was a new twist. I'm wondering what games EA will cut. Definitely not anything from Bioware, that's for sure. All their games are pretty much "Hits".

I haven't paid much attention to the sales, did Dead Space really not do well? It was a fantastic start to a franchise if you ask me, I couldn't say the same for Mirrors Edge, and Need for Speed has been dying for years... I hope Dead Space will continue on.

they keep talking about how bad Dead Space and Mirror's Edge did but I'd like to see figures, like how much money went into development and advertising and all that stuff, and how much they got back in sales revenue, and for all we know the performance of these titles is fine and it's just the preferred shareholders complaining because they wanted a higher dividend returns so EA lost more money when they sold their stock out

I think all game publishers and developers should concentrate their efforts on quality instead of quantity! EA has consistently assembly lined subpar updates to their popular titles slapping another number behind it or the next years digit or some other adverb and thinks the gaming public won't see through their tatics. we want content and replay ability! Simply put, we want our moneys worth since money is hard to come by, and our time is even more precious! After all, you can't ever get those hours back once you played one of their cheesy movie tie in games, or half-azzed effort for a need for speed game, lest we forget that their sports titles for years have been merely roster updates with prettier colors. It's time they (the developers) realize that while we all want to see a mortal kombat versus dc game, we don't necessarily want to have just the characters overlay a tired fight engine. I guess EA is starting to see that they aren't bullet proof and need to start bringing out better games instead of flooding the store shelves with the syrup topped sh!t they call pancakes!

Hell of a shame - but at least this could halt the never ending monopoly of EA. The way things were going, every game we bought would have ended up with an EA label on the cover!

Mirror's edge failed because they made a game that looked like a FPS but didn't play like a FPS. It confused all the slow children. Dead Space was limited in it's appeal because of the strong 'M' tag, and NFS hasn't had a hit in a decade... If they were expecting something amazing from those they failed at the top... yet they lay off the developers... doesn't make sense.

Why dont these game publishers realize that $60 bucks is too much for a game! This is the main reason I have cut way back on my and my kids game library! They could reach so many more people if they werent so over priced. Yeah I know they cost a ton of money to make but they have painted themselves into a corner with that price point. Just my humble opinion.
