EA killing Online Passes for existing games

Publisher confirms it is retroactively eliminating online passes for all EA titles beginning with EA Sports games.

In response to consumer feedback, Electronic Arts has announced it is doing away with its controversial Online Pass scheme altogether. Previously, the company said only that future titles would not include Online Passes. Now, the move will be applied retroactively, beginning with EA Sports titles.

No Caption Provided

"As we discontinue Online Pass for our new EA titles, we are also in the process of eliminating it from all our existing EA titles as well," EA corporate communications representative John Reseburg told Game Informer. "We heard the feedback from players and decided to do away with Online Pass altogether."

"Players will see it first with some EA Sports titles, where a prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear in-game; with other titles we are simply making Online Passes available free of charge online," he continued. "These are rolling updates that are taking effect over the next several weeks. We hope players continue to enjoy our games and online services for a long time to come."

Online Passes have often been viewed as ways for developers and publishers to offset the financial shortfall of not seeing revenue when games are traded in and resold through retailers.

Several Sony execs already have....they've just qualified it by indicating that its only an option for pushishers to choose on the PS4, rather than a core feature of the console.

@Homerj They haven't said ANYTHING. They said it was up to the publisher. Sony isn't as stupid as Microsoft plus they have seen the backlash.

Sony knew what the backlash would be before it was even announced. Thats why they have spent so much effort in emphasising their commitment to core gamers...and why they have time and again put the blame squarely on the publishers where it belongs.

ill just say this.. if Sony end up reveling a similar plan as MS, this will , undoubtedly , have me hanging up the controllers. time to find a hobby that doesn't have DLC, Online passes or requires you to install a big brother camera in your living room. When did this get so far from just being about raw gaming? shesh.....

Right... because now you will get money on used games which makes this online pass kinda pointless now. But I will give credit where credit is do. Removing Online Passes is something at least.

@Fake-out I wasn't thanking them. It was more like a warning. If what you say is true about the fee, then that would be the something worse, and I would continue to boycott them.

Yes, the reason EA is doing this is obviously because of DRM measures being implemented directly to the discs themselves, but at least they're finally doing away with online passes. People just like to complain and pretend they're witty.

@chipwithdip

"People here act like they can be slick by buying used games to get what they want while 'punishing the company'."

I am being slick though.

Blocking online isn't some clever action by EA to swindle more cash from me personally, because I could care less about the garbage multiplayer EA shoehorns into each game.

Honestly from the console gamers perspective other than a few minor annoyances I don't see things changing that much EXCEPT for one huge thing. Game Fly. What happens to people who rent games... yikes. If you use game fly hopefully Microsoft and Sony have made some deal with the games game fly purchases... or good bye rental business.

@Alkpaz @guitarist1980 it seems that way.. Microsoft and I believe Sony are going the PC route.. Except you have the ability to uninstall your code and sell it back. Which the PC industry does not have.

@guitarist1980 @thequickshooter @Alkpaz

so you'll pay 55$ instead of 60$

it's not that bad for a new game, but have you seen the terrible prices on games on demand on xbox live?

jesus, 3 months old games there costs pretty much 50$-60$

@thequickshooter @guitarist1980 @Alkpaz nah you wont pay full price for a used game. Over time most game value drops in price dramatically. When you buy a new used game you only save 5 bucks... I dont see that trend changing.

BC2's maps were part of mandatory updates, so if the Online Pass is free.. then yes, the maps are free too.
BC2: Vietnam is a different story though, since it's an expansion.

No this is EA PR BS. All future consoles are going to require you to uninstall the game and give it back to the store for money. And the publisher and the console manufacturer are going to get a cut. This is just EA's way of saying we are just going to blame it on Microsoft and Sony now... its not our fault. And I dont blame them at all. EA is not doing so well.

this is the reason why developer love the fact that Microsoft is finally fixing the situation. Game Studious will flock over to Microsoft because its safer there. I believe there is a good chance that Sony will follow.

@XxAK47xX I think Sony will have a similar plan in place. I cant see how Sony who is in the RED can afford to not take a cut out of the used games market.

it's a strong possibilty that might happen

the xbox and playstation are like brothers

each console port look the same on both of them

and it seems microsoft are trying to appease the publishers and sony cannot afford to get turned down by a big publisher like EA

it might just happen

@guitarist1980 @XxAK47xX If the used game plans don't force used games to extraordinary prices I don't see a massive problem with the used games stuff.

It is only if they don't use any tact with this and force everyone out of the used game market that everything will go to shit.

I mean I at the moment share my games with my little brother. Now if he wants a game he will have to go and buy one but if the used games aren't that expensive that won't be a problem AND Sony/Microsoft and the producers get a cut as well.

In the end I don't see much of a problem in that since they are the ones spending millions to make and deliver these games for/to us.

If Sony didnt allow the exact same system, there would be no Activision-Ubi-EA games on the PS4, period. This has become the DRM-gen at the direct behest of the big publishers. Its clear from public statements by both MS and Sony execs that MS was a willing collaborator in building this system, while Sony was forced to play along to get the big publishers on their console. I'm heavily betting that Sony will hammer the point home by announcing that the cloud DRM system is not the central design spec of the PS4 as it is in the Xbox (d)One, that it s provided merely as an option for those publishers that demand it, and make it crystal clear by not using it on any of their own self-published titles.

@guitarist1980 @supermarioooooo Sony already said it up to the publisher if they want to include restrictions. Also this generation isn't slated to be as expensive to produce consoles.

so that pretty much confirms all EA games on both ps4 and x1 are going to block used/rented games. way to kill your industry, clowns.

they'll need to drastically reduce their game prices to gain more sales if they block used games. it's simple economics. and reinforced by this story:

“We find that the optimal price would be on average about 33% lower than the current price level, if the used game market were eliminated,” said Ishihara in an email. “So roughly speaking, in the US, game prices should go down to about $40.”

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2013/05/nyu-used-games-study/

Although, $30 is a more realistic price point to get me to bite. But I'll continue to wish in one hand and shit in another and see what fills up faster.
