EA discusses why Battlefield is not annualized

"You want to be really careful that you don't destroy the franchise," CFO Blake Jorgensen.

Electronic Arts has explained why the Battlefield series, unlike Call of Duty, is not released on a yearly basis. Asked by an analyst during the UBS Global Technology Conference this week if Battlefield could be an annualized franchise, CFO Blake Jorgensen laid out the reasons why this would be difficult and potentially problematic.

"The challenges are you’ve got to most likely do it out of two studios because it’s hard, it’s a two-year project," Jorgensen said. "Battlefield takes us about two years to develop and so you want to make sure that you're sharing talent across studios, so you keep core talent of the product and the experience for the consumer there."

Stockholm, Sweden-based DICE develops all core games in the Battlefield series, though the recently established DICE LA also contributes for multiplayer map packs like Second Assault for Battlefield 4. The Call of Duty series, on the other hand, switches every year between Infinity Ward and Treyarch, with assistance from Sledgehammer Games, Raven Software, and NeverSoft Entertainment.

Jorgensen said another issue to consider when annualizing a franchise is making sure every new entry in the series is perceived as substantially different than its predecessor.

"You also want to be really careful that you don’t destroy the franchise along the way. You've got to make it exciting and different, but at the same time you want to make sure you maintain a great franchise," Jorgensen said.

In addition, releasing a new Battlefield game every year would potentially hurt ongoing digital content sales, Jorgensen said

"Battlefield is a product that doesn’t just sell once; it sells for 24 months associated with not just Battlefield, but all the additional Battlefield Premium activities that the consumer wants," he said. "So you’ve got to be careful that you don’t destroy some of that tail that is on the Battlefield product."

All of that said, Jorgensen explained that EA remains interested in looking at ways to grow the Battlefield business, though he did not provide any specifics.

Oh my God, they're not saying the actual reason: if in 2 years they were only able to the Battlefield 4 we have today, which is still a beta with frequent crashes and missing stuff (no of squad creating or loadout customization from the menu), for example, how awful would it be if they developed it in 1 year ? Come on EA/Dice, stop talking nonsense and finish the game.

They are more or less making the money even if it WERE an annualized franchise since they charge, what, $ 15 per map pack? I would assume most Battlefield players buy those or go for the premium at some point after the purchase.

<< LINK REMOVED >> precisely!...yes, everybody would go for premium...then again, all the maps, weapons, upgrades, etc.which the premium gives mean like 50% more content, in other words, a huge difference to the base game...after the last fifth DLC everybody without Premium was playing with literally half of the game, if not less...if you don't rush into premium right away, but wait until the prices die down, you could get both BF3 and Premium in a Premium edition for the same price people used to pay for BF3 alone just a few months ago, that is when you really got the bang for your buck...then again people who are going for everything right at launch, yes, they are being milked big time, but still if you are the sort who can afford to go for everything at launch you probably can afford to be milked...

With the amount of yearly released sports games, and franchises EA has already destroyed, they sound like massive two faced liars in this case.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Honestly though, I see no difference between Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 that is noticable enough to justify me making a purchase. Not only that, but from what I've heard it was a broken mess at launch, plagued with server issues and crashes.

I'm glad EA doesn't stoop to constantly pumping out uninspired yearly sequels of the same games like Madden, NBA Live, NCAA Football, FIFA, NHL, etc... 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and even a special Madden 25 which doesn't really look any different than other Maddens. I'm glad EA would never do something like that... oh wait... those are EA games... my bad....

<< LINK REMOVED >> well, fact is, most people who buy these sports games want them every year, e.g. they want every season...leaving one out would actually mean negative PR and a backlash from the community...something which is hard to understand for gamers who do not play sports games

Battlefield title = 2 year development time

COD title = About 2 year development time (once Treyarch/Infinity Ward releases one title, they shortly start work on another)

This is why Battlefield is not annualized. If a title so glitched and exploitable as the latest COD game is made in only just 2 years, imagine how much of a disaster an annual Battlefield would be.

It'd be more of a Rush than 64 player Kharg Island :P

I wonder how many sequels(or spin-offs) with the same name EA has to put out before they consider their franchises to be annualized.

Great advice, Blake! Go tell the guys at EA Sports, they're gonna be thrilled!
