EA discusses why Battlefield is not annualized

"You want to be really careful that you don't destroy the franchise," CFO Blake Jorgensen.

Electronic Arts has explained why the Battlefield series, unlike Call of Duty, is not released on a yearly basis. Asked by an analyst during the UBS Global Technology Conference this week if Battlefield could be an annualized franchise, CFO Blake Jorgensen laid out the reasons why this would be difficult and potentially problematic.

"The challenges are you’ve got to most likely do it out of two studios because it’s hard, it’s a two-year project," Jorgensen said. "Battlefield takes us about two years to develop and so you want to make sure that you're sharing talent across studios, so you keep core talent of the product and the experience for the consumer there."

Stockholm, Sweden-based DICE develops all core games in the Battlefield series, though the recently established DICE LA also contributes for multiplayer map packs like Second Assault for Battlefield 4. The Call of Duty series, on the other hand, switches every year between Infinity Ward and Treyarch, with assistance from Sledgehammer Games, Raven Software, and NeverSoft Entertainment.

Jorgensen said another issue to consider when annualizing a franchise is making sure every new entry in the series is perceived as substantially different than its predecessor.

"You also want to be really careful that you don’t destroy the franchise along the way. You've got to make it exciting and different, but at the same time you want to make sure you maintain a great franchise," Jorgensen said.

In addition, releasing a new Battlefield game every year would potentially hurt ongoing digital content sales, Jorgensen said

"Battlefield is a product that doesn’t just sell once; it sells for 24 months associated with not just Battlefield, but all the additional Battlefield Premium activities that the consumer wants," he said. "So you’ve got to be careful that you don’t destroy some of that tail that is on the Battlefield product."

All of that said, Jorgensen explained that EA remains interested in looking at ways to grow the Battlefield business, though he did not provide any specifics.

Apologists, apologists everywhere.

"Leave DICE alone! It's hard! Leave em alone!"

Battlefield 4 is Battlefield 3 with different maps, different guns, more destruction, and prettier graphics. So no, there's absolutely no excuse for the bugs. Especially considering that, if you have seen the early alpha and beta footage, the game literally was just Battlefield 3 on different maps.

The frostbite "3" engine isn't that changed from Frostbite 2 to make it remotely acceptable for any of the GAMEPLAY bugs to be present because the gameplay is EXACTLY the same as Battlefield 3.

In fact it's even more dumbed down if you look at how easy it is to hit people now - they dumbed the ballistics down hardcore. I've hit people across Hainan from the hotel roof, that I couldn't even see, with RFB iron sights on single shot. Or accidentally headshot people from far away without aiming at the head, on single.

The server bugs are fine. No one is going around pissed off that the servers occasionally crash. It happens with all multiplayer games.

You seem to know a lot about the changes between games. You must be a developer. Which part of the game did you work on? With such intimate info of the frostbite engine changes you could shed light on it for us. Please do.

@Grenadeh It's a shame to see the Battlefield series go down the drain like this. We'll probably never see a big leap again like the one between Battlefield 1942/Vietnam and Battlefield 2.

If BF was an annual release, it would basically turn into CoD and it wouldn't take long for everyone to get sick of it. However it wouldn't surprise me if EA decided to do this. One look at their sports division shows they're not above releasing the same game every year with only minor changes.

"So we decided biannually was better." Also, BF4 isn't much of an improvement over 3, so this guy can screw right off.

Have u been playing the same game? There are many improvements. I can immediately tell that the targeting is more refined and weapons are balanced. The pace of the game is faster also nearly every level has 1 or more flanking spots. No more funneled battles. The environment are littered with things that make u easier to spot and hear.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Weapons balance could just as well have been a patch. As for the other supposed new features in BF4, let's just say that open maps with plenty of flanking spots, larger squads, voice communications and commander isn't exactly new to the series. Play Battlefield 2, released 2005, and you'll see what I mean.

Because they see what's happening over at Activision with CoD. They don't want to milk the franchise to its demise.

None of the versions work correctly anyhow. With tons of server drops, disconnects, server issues... For God's sake, a service called Kali in 1992 had better results and here we are 21 years later and this is the best these hacks can come up with? We should all get refunds for a game that simply doesn't work in multiplayer... Annualized. They cannot even get the servers to work after 2-3 years apart per game... I cannot even imagine what would happen every year.

a battlefield game needs at least 3 years of development. is a big game and 2 years is clearly not enough since bf3 had a terrible launch and was never 100% fixed and bf4 is even worse. battlefield already changed the core gameplay for worse since bf3. i hate to see awesome games being ruined because devs think that the casual player is a kid, so they make their games easy to play. this mentality is what is ruining battlefield games. everything is lock on or easy to use. why aren´t jdams like bf1943 bombs? why isn´t sraw like the bc2 at4? why are laser guided missiles for scout helicopters lock on, why not bumbfire? why there isn´t two powerfull rockets for jets? why does active radar auto locks?...instead of skill based weapons, bf4 is full of boring lock on weapons.

<< LINK REMOVED >> There are plenty of skill based weapons. Examples would be the RPG which does massive damage to tanks rears and sides, Smaw, Zuni Rockets, Tanks turning choppers into clay pigeons, attack jets using the main cannons and rockets.

Lock ons are strictly used to balance the playing field. It somewhat prevents vehicles from dominating the battlefield on open field maps. Other wise if you run with a smart crew non lock weapons are preferable. The scout helicopters guided rocket refreshes faster than all anti lock systems, giving you an open shot in conjunction with 25mm cannons to adequately take out a a vehicle. Practice with the attack jet and you will realize the main cannon is all you need.

As far as BF4 bugs: In DICE and EA's defense you guys have got to understand all the pressure that they're under. They have to release and manage the game on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and as launch titles for the experimental Xbox ONE and PS4. That's alot for a team to work on and try to remove all bugs out in a fast time. If they would have dropped PS3 and 360 they would have a better support team, but they would look like douchebags and lose money from fans.

@DIGN Yes, it is a lot. Fucking wah. They can have some cheese. There is pretty much no excuse for there to be bugs on the PC release - LESS so on the 360 and PS3, static platforms. There are literally bugs that have been in Frostbite engine since day 1, like I said above. Engine, Bugs that are still there from BF3.

From BFGD3.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You mean like how they ruined Battlefield and turned it into Call of Honor: Tour of the Battlefield: Modern Unlock-contest?

Battlefield 1942 was a fucking amazing game, with and without mods, before and after patches. It was the shit. It came out before CoD, and it was so much better than CoD.

With every subsequent release, they chipped away and chipped away until the franchise just sucked balls. BF2 was a good game, honestly. BC2 was a good game even. So was BF1943. 2142 had a lot of cool ideas, too, especially Titan mode.

BF4 I cannot believe I bought after explicitly saying I wasn't going to. I blame my clan and my friends. I don't think these games would sell if everyone just would be anti-social.

It makes sense, in ways, at least that a space station would let you buy things. It's a city after all. But not the ship.
