The classic shooter franchise Contra returns to consoles this year with a new Nintendo Switch game called Contra: Rogue Corps. Announced during Nintendo's E3 2019 briefing, Rogues is a third-person, behind-the-shoulder title that also features moments that are presented from a top-down perspective and from the side.

We were introduced to characters Kaiser, some kind of cyborg panda (really), a kanana weilding woman named Ms. Harakiri, and a huge bug called "The Gentleman." You can play solo or fight alongside other humans with 4-player online and local multiplayer. Watch the first trailer above.

The Contra series debuted all the way back in 1987, and since then Konami has continued to release new installments, though releases have slowed in recent years. 2011's Hard Corps: Uprising is the latest installment in the series, serving as a prequel to Contra: Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis.

Contra Rogue Corps is due for release on September 24, 2019. Also revealed was a new Contra Anniversary Collection that bundles together a number of games from the series' past. It's among the games out now on Switch's Eshop.

Nintendo's E3 briefing is the final major press conference of E3 2019. The end of the press conferences signals the opening of the E3 show floor later on Tuesday, June 11. The show runs through Thursday, June 13, and GameSpot is on-hand at the event to bring you all the news and videos from the show all week, so keep checking back for the latest.
