E3 2017: Rocket League On Switch Will Run 720p 60 FPS Docked And Undocked

Switch-powered battle cars.

The biggest news to come out of developer Psyonix from E3 2017 is that Rocket League is getting a Nintendo Switch release. With regard to how it'll look and perform, Psyonix VP Jeremy Dunham stated in an interview with GameSpot that the Switch version will run at 720p with a consistent 60 frames per second whether the console is docked or undocked.

Even with two-player split screen undocked or four-player split screen on a TV, Psyonix is aiming to maintain a solid frame rate. There will be other graphical compromises to maintain proper performance on the Switch, though the exact visual changes have yet to be determined. However, the Xbox One X version won't be making any compromises; Dunham said it'll run 4K and HDR.

No Caption Provided

Switch owners can play across platforms with Xbox One and PC players. However, Sony isn't allowing PlayStation 4 users to connect with Xbox One and Switch players. PC gamers can connect to all the other platforms, but the matchmaking pool will be split between PS4 and Xbox plus Switch.

Rocket League will release for Switch during the Holiday season this year and it's currently available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Be sure to check out all the announcements around Nintendo and catch up on what games are coming out this year. There's plenty of news that dropped during E3, so stick with GameSpot for all your coverage.

If Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 can run 1080p at 60fps docked, I'm sure this can too. I'm guessing the devs can't figure out how or don't want to put money into that optimization.

@ballashotcaller: All indications are that Splatoon 2 will also be 720p/60fps docked...

@never-named: That footage is based on the Global Testfire footage, the Splatoon devs said on the Treehouse stream that they upped the resolution to 1080p docked on the final version of the game.

@ballashotcaller: they're a small dev, and are using a different engine than those games most likely.

I wonder if it's another situation where the dev can't figure out how to make the game operate at varying clock speeds? Many engines rely on that, and is one of the reasons Minecraft on the Switch doesn't look better while docked.

Unless they fixed that already...

@dirthurts: Could be, although Minecraft does look better when docked as it has a higher view distance and the the frame rate is more stable.

Isn't cross play allowed in SFV on PS4? So what's the problem then?

@kitsune2222: The problem is Sony being utter asshats and blatantly lying about why they won't allow it.

@kitsune2222: it has crossplay with the only other platform connected to it: PC. Rocket league is cross-platform with PC-Xbox-Switch, or PC-PS4.

It's odd that the Ps4 pro version has 4k but no HDR. I wonder if they plan on updating the playstation with HDR as well. Would make the game look even better obviously.

lol...when Sony kept refusing to do crossplay with Xbox all the critics believed Sony's excuses.....now that Sony is refusing to work with Nintendo and you start to see the weeb critics like GS and IGN start to call out Sony's practice here as anti-gamer....good fun :)

720p for that display is absolutely allright and on top its 60fps. If you are outside, travelling, airplane, vacation imo its perfectly fine.

At home on other hand 900p or 1080p would have been nice if you have a bigger Tv. But then...you either have a X1 or S,the Ps4 or the pro or a pc to play with better graphics and higher resolution already at home

@grimakis: He did say 900p or 1080p would be good for the big screen. Which it would be. With a bigger screen comes more noticeable pixel quantity.

I'm interested in Rocket League, but at this point I still don't know whether it'll be a buy for me. I don't have reliable Internet, it usually doesn't work, and RL seems like a game you need Internet for right?

@Ovirew: My current place has terrible internet (1 MB per second or worse) which makes it very difficult to play at Diamond ranks. So you might want to take that into consideration. Definitely my favorite splitscreen game right now though.

@rocky4ondvd: Yeah, my Switch doesn't usually want to connect at home, just on rare occasions. My PC goes online just fine, though I can't play any overwhelming online games with it. It's good to know the splitscreen is fun, and I like that is has bots as an option as -sharp-shooter- said. I guess a lot of factors come into play, but if the game looks fun and I can afford it, then maybe I'll get a copy.

@Ovirew: You can play against bots and can change their difficulty. There is even a season mode where you can do 1v1 2v2 and 3v3 all with bots as teammates and opponents.

Good on them for making it 60fps, but I can play this 4K/60 or 1440p/144 on PC. :p

@BassMan: Laptop is much more cumbersome to play on the go, at least when compared to a Switch.

Used to play on my laptop, but now my work laptop is a Mac which does a very poor job at running RL.

"Laptop is much more cumbersome to play on the go, at least when compared to a Switch."

I highly, HIGHLY doubt the inclusion of a keyboard and the use of a power cable makes it that more inconvenient. Especially when laptops are in use everywhere.

This is how it should be done......

make the game run as fast and smooth as possible even if resolution has to be bumped down.....720p isn't that bad......

@darthrevenx:

Sorry, but 720p looks pretty damn grainy and blown up on a 1080p monitor, I don't game on the go.

Here we are in 2017, the early stages of moving to 4K and we get a 720p release of a nearly 2 year old indie title...not acceptable.

I don't know what settings you're using but I managed to play the game on a 45+ inch screen in splitscreen with a friend on a laptop from 2009 and the game looked and performed just fine.

@thormjolnirs:

My consoles are at my computer desk on a 27" IPS monitor, so I sit fairly close to a very sharp display. Some games I have on PC and PS3 at 720p.

720p on my display lacks crispness.

@darthrevenx: its a shame though. I personally would have loved 1080 60 for RL on switch.

IMO, just a bit more power for the switch would be ok. It would have been able to compare to the PS4 and X1 fine.
