E3 06: THQ: Wii dev costs fraction of PS3's, 360's

Publisher talks cost and ease of development for Nintendo's next-generation system.

THQ gave its quarterly earnings report today, and the analysts' conference call that followed saw the publisher detail some of its plans going forward. On multiple occasions in the course of the call, THQ president and CEO Brian Farrell spoke about developing for the Nintendo Wii, touching on a number of topics including THQ's first reactions to its Wii games.

"We showed in a press event recently a SpongeBob game using the Nintendo Wii and Wii controller," Farrell said, "and standing there watching very jaded game journalists hoot and holler on a SpongeBob game was actually quite relieving. One of the things we like about that platform is the development costs...on the Wii are nowhere near what they are on the PS3 and Xbox 360. That's something that's quite encouraging. As you probably know, our portfolio maps very, very well to what we think the Wii demographic is going to be."

Currently the publisher has announced Wii games based on the Nickelodeon shows SpongeBob SquarePants and Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as one for Pixar Animation Studios' upcoming film Cars.

Farrell also talked about developing for the Wii as opposed to the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, noting that it was far less expensive making games for Nintendo's console. Farrell prefaced his comments by noting that he wasn't "a development professional," but he said the development environment for the Wii was similar to the GameCube's.

"[The Wii] wasn't a whole new programming environment," Farrell said. "So we had a lot of tools and tech that work in that environment. So those costs--and again, I hate these broad generalizations--but they could be as little as a third of the high-end next-gen titles... Maybe the range is a quarter to a half."

It's not like THQ spends much money on the development of their games anyway. They have Yukes to foot the lion's share of the bill on their moneymaking WWE franchise.

DS is weaker than the PSP technologically, but it kicks more ass. Let's hope the same is true for the Rev. They could have a very attractive piece of the market if they sell everything for cheaper, providing it isn't all crap that comes out. 2 kickass games on the Wii, or half of a game, money-wise, on the PS3?

Another thing is i do not hate nintendo, i do hate what nintendo has done to it's image by being ignorant of their competitors. They still are ignorant by stating that they aren't in the same class as Sony and Microsoftm therefor they aren't competing head to head. My question is this how is Nintendo going to win the console race if they don't cosider ther compertiors as their rivals??

Evo310whp. Nintendo didn't make RE, that was capcom. The only reason why it ended up as an early exclusive to the NGC because Nintendo allowed Capcom to make the two Zelga games for the gameboy. And Yes Nintendo has NEVER made a M-rated game.

Well that's all fine and dandy and to expected but it would all depends on how much effort they will put into production. Hopefully they don't just dump any thing and everything on Wii. It would be pretty crappy if Wii gets all the unproductive crap while developers focus only big titles on the other two system. Oh well It's a good thing I'm getting every system under the sun this coming gen...

meimnobody, So your telling me that the best game developer in the world can't make a great M-rated game. Or is that nintendo doesn't whant to hurt it's family oriented name. Remember the Japanese comersial, in wich people where playing the now know Wii. Those people where of all ages because Nintendo is trying to mask their Kids games and brand them into E rated games. If you take out all the perveted games that only use the M-rated rating because of boobs or sex, then yes those games are crappy. But what if you use the M-rated rating and give it that kick ass gameplay then you have EGM Platnium games like HALO or GTA:SA. M-rated gives developers more freedom without restrictions, But you need a company that has the BALLS to pull it off. Nintendo has NO BALL just a little Wii.

Elye the monkey once again Star fox was made by Rare who ruined it. The cell shaded Zelda was made that way because they wanted the game to be more expressive you dipstick. They don't aim to children. Children when asked to play a modern Zelda give up it's too complicated for them. It's too complicated for nongamer adults as well. Nintendo doesn't aim at kids. They aim at everyone. E rated games sell far more on average then T or M. E rated games are played by mostly adults. Most gamers are adults. Nintendo titles sell often to a third or a fourth or even half of the consoles made for it. Far more then the other console specific games. No one in ten years has sold more then 20 million copies of a game. Funny how no one has broken Nintendo's game sales records from their NES, SNES days. Tell me when was Nintendo marketing towards adults back then because video games have always been considered for children. They are toys. I am sorry you have issues over accepting that but stop projecting on Nintendo. Nintendo is one of the best game developement studios in existance also the second most profitable one with the highest game sales. Microsoft tried to buy Nintendo before they announced the Xbox. That is right Bill didn't want to enter the market himself at first he wanted to do it by proxy. Nintendo's opponets would love them to become a third party since it would boost their console sales by an arse load. However Nintendo would burn themselves to the ground before they become a third party.

Mr Monkey, you are so wrong! A game that has a E rating, means that: 1. It has no nudity, 2. Not a lot of blood! That's all! As far as adults who play games that are rated E, being losers, please go take your insults somewhere else. Go hang out on LIVE or something... This is Nintendo news, and it clearly does not concern you.

What's funny is to see all the insecure haters bashing the Wii just because they don't like it. How easy do some ps2 fans forget their console was by far the most weak, but the best when it comes to the games. I think the same might happen here, and THQ does have its fair share of good games, such as the smakcdown games and games like Destroy all humans. So it's going to be good to have them on board.

Ahem do kids make up most of the peopel playing tetris? Nope it's adults. E doesn't mean kids you stupid ignorant piece of white trash who dares to insult monkeys by associating himself with them. Silicon Knights, Rare were Nintendo second parties directed by Nintendo you sack of garbage. M rated games do not make you an adult for playing them. God of War bah it sold less then most Nintendo titles which bought mostly by adults. While God of War was bought mostly for kids by ignorant parents. I see far more kids gushing over M rated games then anything else because their testicles haven't dropped. The ratio of M rated titles on Nintendo consoles is much higher then others. Join the ranks of Sony and Microsoft eh? Funny how no one would want to do that if they have a brain. You mean join the ranks of companies known for lying, selling crap hardware with incredibly high failure rates, the lowest profits of any console hardware maker in the case of Microsoft 12 billion loss. Lowest game sales when compared to past Nintendo consoles. \ Funny how people gush over GTA selling 14 million on several consoles and pc when Nintendo has sold dozens of titles beating that for only one piece of hardware. The only childish games one finds in abundance are on the xbox and ps2. Sorry you have your head so far up your butt you cannot see that. Sony has dozens of kid franchises that sony developed that failed. Nintendo doesn't have a kids franchise they developed. Even Mircosoft is having Rare make a cartoon aimed at five year olds so they can attract millions of dollars of game sales to flag up their division. Most people who do indeed play E rated games are adults. It's because adults are concerned with gameplay something lacking in 99% of M rated titles. Nintendo hasn't made a M rated title because they consider them to be crap and 99% of the time M rated titles are garbage. They aren't best sellers by far. Only GTA, Halo, Doom have sold millions of game copies.

Oh and about Starfox adventures, how have the mighty fallen. Before (SNES) it was this harcore, paml sweaty game and it current form is just too easy. Let's face it Starfox is just another francishe that Nintendo has rebuild to suit kids and outcast harcore gamers. The cell shaded Zelda ( i own) is a the prime example of how Nintendo tried to pass one up from us harcore gamer over to the kids. Poor link, he looked like a power puff girl. Just Imagine how great it will if Metroid and Zelda would be somewhat M-rated.

Yes kiddy is not a real word. It's not an adjective. Games are not a small child. A small child is a noun. Evo clean up your sentence you aren't making any sentence. Nintendo games are not childish. What is childish by far are the 13 year olds who claim GTA is a great game series because they can kill hookers. It used to be any 13 year old who would say such a thing used to have the stuffing knocked out of them then the kid was put in a group home to be watched.

One thing is to release a couple of kid oriented games and another is to basicly build the company on it, that is what Nintendo has done. Before that let me say that i don't care that you say Kirby isn't a kids game. For crying out loud it's on the freaky fox box/ for kids tv. Hey if adults play Kirby without a kid playing with them, then they are just some serius losers. If you think that has a E rating it doesn't make it a kids games, let's face the truth the most of people playing the game are kids. You know Sony does make some kids game but they also made God of War. When has Nintendo, not sillicon knights, nor Rare, but Nintendo themselves developed a M rated game. The answers is NEVER!!! that is Nintendo is a kiddy company, when they themselve do make a M rated game then they join in the ranks of Sony and Microsoft.

^ I hope your not serious go get a dictionary kiddy or kiddie is a etymology for kid or child. Why are you going out of your way to try and convince everyone that nintendo game library is not mostly childish games, again except for a select few most of the games that come out for nintendo are childish that of course is my opinion tho. I believe all the next gen system will turn out great i am not saying the wii is going to suck or anything.

Kirby's Air ride( NGC), Yoshi Story (N64), Starfox( NGC), Custom Robots( NGC) and Oh yes not one not two but a BUNCH OF FREEEKING POKEMON GAMES Starfox is a kids franchise? Amazing how many adults play those games and now consider Rare to be the suck for what they did to the last game they made for Nintendo on the Starfox brand. Custom Robots? You mean Custom Robo? Funny how that is rated T and is a fighting game. Tell me how is it marketed to kids? Kirby's Air Ride? Funny how a little Nintendo marketing research tidbit shows that to be a lie. Nintendo when SEGA had 50% did numerous studies in which game players of the SEGA system were asked why they played SEGA games. The answer was that SEGA games were far easier to play since Sonic games and most genesis games used only one button. This was what was offered when Nintendo stated why do you play SEGA consoles when our console has better graphics, better sounds, more things you can do. Kirby games are played mostly by adults. They are considered too complicated for most kids. I see Sony and Microsoft saying the same things Nintendo did back then. Pokemon? Sony and Microsoft wish they had the franchise since it rakes in millions of dollars for Nintendo and is a property worth hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Viva Pinata, numerous Sony game franchises are hundreds of times more vapid kid stuff then any crap Pokemon game. So only one game series is actually targeted towards Children and that is because it is a major money maker. Amazing how your ignorance knows no bounds.

decebal, no i dont not consider those games childish...i did say before in my last post that there were a select few and those are in that selected few. Now that fact that you wrote all that...clearly you have too much time on your hands. Did not mean bash Wii the system but just some of the majority of games that nintendo tends to make...i know kids play games i was a kid myself but from the old games nintendo use to make...it just seems they are too focused on kiddy themed games is all. Lets just hope E3 brings good things for all the consoles.

There will be bad games on every console, get over it. The Seal of Quality doesn't do as much as it did 20 years ago. lol Superman 64 has a huge "Licensed by Nintendo" on the title screen. That being said, you know first party Nintendo games will have excellent quality, as always.

Let's wait and see if cheaper dev costs equal cheaper games. It would be nice if they pass the cost savings on to the customers. I do think lower dev costs will mean more crap games. It will also mean more games. It is simple math really, if you assume a constant % of crap Vs. good games then when you have more games the overall number of crap games goes up. I think some people will attempt to "cash in" on poor games and concepts simply because they cost less to develop. But the good news is that there will be more games total, if the third parties decide to put the effort in to the Wii. Given the poor reception that Nintendo has gotten in the past, I think it is up in the air as to how they will be supported this time. In the end it doesn't really matter, people buy Nintendo systems to play Nintendo games. And Nintendo will have some good stuff for sure.

Nintendo's Seal of Quality is now a joke. That quality over quantity has made the N64 and most recent gamecube a faliure. It's a shame because the gamecube is a good system, but Nintendo has lost so much flair over the year.

HAHA the Wii will sufer the same fate as the Gamecube, being label a kiddy system by developers. What did you expect from a system called the Wii, from a company called Nintendo. Think if you have this kick ass mature game what system will you make it for, 1st PS3, close second 360, and forget the Wii. Not many companies will take the plunge in releasing a mature game on a nintendo's system, look how disapointed Capcom was with the sales of the RE series with Nintendo's GC. The bottom line is that nintendo's corky controller will please parents as they see their kids acting foolish, but imagine what the politians will say if they see gamers making death moves on the screen, they'll scream bloody murder. I'm sure Nintendo will prevent other companies from releasing their M rated games, making their controller a virtual weapon and destroying the kiddy image that the big N has build.

What Nintendo franchises are catertered to kids? Why is it Nintendo bashers can never answer this? Metroid is for everybody. Mario is mostly played by adults. Tetris is played mostly by adults adults who will never buy another video game. Brain Training games are bought mostly by adults. As for those that say Resident Evil 4 was the best gamecube game obviously they have never bothered to play any gamecube game because on average gamecube games were better rated then most PS2 titles and Xbox titles. Gamecube has 77 mature titles for it. Zelda isn't catered to kids most people who play Zelda games are adults. Nintendo tries to cater to everyone. Nintendo isn't a kiddy company. Kiddy isn't even a word. Get your head out of your ass if you think Nintendo caters to kids. PS2 is a console for kids. Immature crybaby kids. They also go ape for Xbox live if they have the money to buy an a xbox.

Evo310whp, If you consider, Eternal Darkness, Metroid, Resident Evil 4, F Zero, Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princes, Super Mario SmashBros, "kids only" games, then you are clearly immature. And that was old generation, Gamecube. This time around it looks like NIntendo will get a lot more support from all companies. Now it so happends that kids play games. And guess what, even though PS2 has way more kids games than GC, kids love to play GC more than PS2. And that is because GC kids games are more fun. So how is NIntendo's fault in that? THat they make good kids games unlike Sony or MS? It looks to me more like Sony keeps trying and trying and they never get the kids games right, so they substitute quality with quantity. -------- And for this article... THQ is targeting kids, and it's a no brainier that kids, won't have access to PS3 or 360, so they figured that Wii is the best console for a kid audience. Great! Does that mean it's only a kids console. Or does that mean that mature titles will not be seen on Wii? I dont' think so. Games like Red Steel, clearly show it. And not only that, but it seems that this time around Nintendo won't get only bad ports from the other consoles. On the contrary, companies develop their games for the Wii. I mean you can go ahead and chose to play Madden on your beautiful 360. Nothing wrong with that. However some of us have been around for a long time, and we simply got bored of playing the same game over and over again with upgraded graphics. But when it comes down to playing Madden with a new control system... well, that's something new. Go play what you want. Like you said, to each it's own. But also grow up (like you say it). Even if the 3d party suport ends up being low like the GC... for some people it is still worth getting more than the other systems, since it has more good exclusives than any other console. I prefer PC versus anything else, since I find that I have more control than the noob stick and no matter what MS tells me, on PC games, still look better. I will own all systems, so don't call me fanboy.

To arge with leapfrog91, the SDK's low cost does have an affect of the development of games. What it equals out to meaning is that new companies just starting out can bring their new and innovative ideas to the Wii. Who knows maybe the Wii can become a new haven for indie developers to get their foot inside the industry. EDIT: Besides even if the development costs were through the roof companies like EA and THQ would still shovel out crap by the truck.

Yea but coming from a developer and not Nintendo is the big deal here. AND yes Spongebob is a big deal journalists, the toughest of the tough to impress enjoying Spongebob?? Well that's both good on the development and hardware side. More signs pointing to the Wii achieving greatness, a quarter to a half that's big chunk of money to save. Now I hope THQ understands one thing this DEMOGRAPHIC should be considered but you absolutely cannot forget about the older gamers here, if this is so great then give us the best wrestling game among other thing I mean I don't blame you for cashing in with products like Cars but give us something new interesting and appealing to people beyond kids.
