E3 06: Hands-on with the final PS3 controller

We get our grubby mitts on Sony's new controller and you know what? It feels pretty good.

LOS ANGELES--At last year's E3, Sony displayed a prototype controller for its upcoming console, the PlayStation 3. The boomerang-shaped wireless device was something of a lightning rod and didn't seem like it was terribly well received. This year, Sony has unveiled the final controller, and it should look pretty familiar.

The PS3's controller now looks roughly like a Dual Shock 2. The size and button placement seem identical. But there are a handful of key differences. You'll feel right at home when you pick it up, but this controller has definitely evolved.

For starters, it's wireless and startlingly lightweight. The Bluetooth device has a mini USB plug on it, presumably for charging. The L2 and R2 triggers are analog and feel quite nice. There's a new central button that has the PlayStation logo on it. It doesn't appear to be functional, but it seems like a likely spot for some sort of "home" or "menu' button.

The biggest change is inside the controller. There are motion-sensing gyroscopes inside the controller that will detect tilting as well as raising and lowering. We get the feeling that wii've seen this in another upcoming console, but we'll save that discussion for message boards or something. Warhawk is one of the games that supports the tilt sensor, and it feels surprisingly tight and easy to use. Flying the plane by tilting the controller is very intuitive.

One thing you won't find in this new controller is force feedback. The rumble feature was said to interfere with the motion-sensing devices. Sony's Phil Harrison even went so far as to tell us that "rumble was last generation, movement is this generation."

We also managed to bump into Criterion's Alex Ward at Sony's grand unveiling, and he said he was really excited about the controller, saying that he "can really see how it fits in his games." We imagine a Burnout game can't be too far behind.

So if you wanted to be a cynic, you could say that this is a wireless PS2 controller with analog triggers like the Xbox, a central guide button like the Xbox 360, and it has internal motion sensors like the Wii. But what's probably most important is that the controller feels pretty nice and it already seems to work well.

Why do some people call it the best controller ever? The PS2 controller is better, at least it had rumble. C'mon Sony! Try a new controller! (Unless you plan to make another boomerang.)

Rumble? Eh, I don't really care for it, it doesn't immerse you in the game, it's just your controller vibrating, "WOOH". Feels good? Heck yes, can't wait to play it. They didn't rip off Nintedo, they used a tottaly different kind of device, damn fanboys...

wow...people joked about this happening, but...just wow...sony steals...not only that, they stole it in a stupid way, the motion sensor technology just wouldn't work that well with a conventional controller, that's why nintendo went with the remote design.

This is pretty awesome. I don't get why people are complaining about the same technology though. Competing companies have copied each other for decades to keep their market and to gain new customers. If you want an example of that try every American auto maker copying Toyota, Honda or Toyota and Nissan copying Americans by trying to make trucks..

The rumble is very important. Although most gamers don't really feel it in the mist of hardcore gamin. Felt it or not, you were in the game with the whole experience. This is an experience being ripped away in place of a new one. The controller that Microsoft and Logitech made for PC's long time ago had motion detection, and they were very accurate. But, they didn't last very long. I invite the new feature, but don't change it to compete against a console that was built solely to be played physically.

Bluetooth is the future and it has better precision than traditional radio signals. Cool it has motion sensor. Remember when you were a kid and play Super Mario jumping along with the game. Ahhh..., I can relive the memories.

What a bunch of tools. They can't come up with anything original. They just have to borrow from everyone else. Nintendo should have patented their technology.

You guys make me laugh whatever sony does with the control pad you guys are just going to bash them first its the boomerang then they change it back to what many people said they should have done and now people are complaining because it doesn't vibrate and also its the so called wii remote copy cat I for one didn't mind the so called boomerang and feel that the dual shock is one of the greatest pad of all time and they are improving it by changing R2/L2 to triggers just makes it better, adding motion sensors to it jut widens its audience to gamers who want all functions from the all the next gen console in one box. So to all the fanboys STFU

I like the new design, we can go without rumble. besides I saw a controller at the sony press confrence that had a wire and maybe it had rumble capability. the ps3 takes the best elements of each controller to create a pretty kool controller that may not be original and innovative but at the least ..... no the boomerang.

Fluroworm Ha Ha ha 3 generations with virtually the same style controller, the only improvements being made having been stolen, i can see the guys at sony worked real hard on this one My Response: Microsoft started their console with Big Rig like controllers....then XBOX Fanboys complained that it was "too big" then MS decided to go for smaller size since Sony and Nintendo were keeping it real for most gamers and MS had to rethink their plans for controllers. Sony may still have the same blueprints from PS1 but that doesn't mean you guys have to rag on them for keeping something original through years to come. Heck look at XBOX 360 Controllers....they have the same layout...except...Left and Right Bunt Buttons and the L &R Triggers below them....hmmm sounds like a L1, L2, R1, R2 layout.....does that ring a bell? also MS fans complained that the White and Black Clear buttons were "too far to reach" what the heck? So they been turned into "bunts" now quit dissin and listen...Im sure there will never be an original idea for any gaming console but, there will be new innovations from them.

A CONTROLLER DOESN'T NEED RUBLE FOR IT TO BE COOL OR COMFORTABLE! SO STFU ALL OF YOU!!! You don't see PC gamers with rumbling keyboards or mice. Having the rumble feature DOESN'T make you fell like you're in the game. Vibration going into the hands? AWESOME!!! (sarcasm)

Don chu understand? the PS3 was so expensive that they needed to spend less money on the production of the controllers. That explains the rumble abscense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The controller is the best for In your face games! I'm glad they mantained the original 1997 dual shock look. I don't miss the rumble a bit, I always thought it was pretty useless, good, but useless, plus it helps saving batteries.

bahamut, this is one thing i actually dont agree with sony on...the absense of rumble!!!! cmon we had rumble for every PS console now...its everybit PLAYSTATION as the vertical stand or the dual analog controllers.... I SERIOUSLY HOPE SONY STILL CONSIDERS SOME FORM OF RUMBLE IN THE DS3.....AT THE VERY LEAST HOW THE HECK WOULD GAMERS USE THEIR GT4 DFP WHEELS ON PS3????????

royalda you just move you wrist dumb@$$, that what I like about the controller! And the moving arm thing is Wii's difference. The gyroscope works, it's a proven technology, not the cr@p you used, Defects :[. finially somebody else realizes this This guy actually knows what he's talking about, unlike about (0% of you other retards that THINK sony is copying nintendo just because you don't know the facts The motion sensor for the PS3 controller was planned back in 2003, check on the boards or the link to the articles (yes, there's more than one)
