E3 06: Hands-on with the final PS3 controller

We get our grubby mitts on Sony's new controller and you know what? It feels pretty good.

LOS ANGELES--At last year's E3, Sony displayed a prototype controller for its upcoming console, the PlayStation 3. The boomerang-shaped wireless device was something of a lightning rod and didn't seem like it was terribly well received. This year, Sony has unveiled the final controller, and it should look pretty familiar.

The PS3's controller now looks roughly like a Dual Shock 2. The size and button placement seem identical. But there are a handful of key differences. You'll feel right at home when you pick it up, but this controller has definitely evolved.

For starters, it's wireless and startlingly lightweight. The Bluetooth device has a mini USB plug on it, presumably for charging. The L2 and R2 triggers are analog and feel quite nice. There's a new central button that has the PlayStation logo on it. It doesn't appear to be functional, but it seems like a likely spot for some sort of "home" or "menu' button.

The biggest change is inside the controller. There are motion-sensing gyroscopes inside the controller that will detect tilting as well as raising and lowering. We get the feeling that wii've seen this in another upcoming console, but we'll save that discussion for message boards or something. Warhawk is one of the games that supports the tilt sensor, and it feels surprisingly tight and easy to use. Flying the plane by tilting the controller is very intuitive.

One thing you won't find in this new controller is force feedback. The rumble feature was said to interfere with the motion-sensing devices. Sony's Phil Harrison even went so far as to tell us that "rumble was last generation, movement is this generation."

We also managed to bump into Criterion's Alex Ward at Sony's grand unveiling, and he said he was really excited about the controller, saying that he "can really see how it fits in his games." We imagine a Burnout game can't be too far behind.

So if you wanted to be a cynic, you could say that this is a wireless PS2 controller with analog triggers like the Xbox, a central guide button like the Xbox 360, and it has internal motion sensors like the Wii. But what's probably most important is that the controller feels pretty nice and it already seems to work well.

It was N64 that first had the rumble pack anyway and the rumble interfered with Sony's (rip off) PS3 controller.

WFCxTigerTank77, are you.... serious? you can't be. this isn't how technology advances, this is theft. this is some jackass at sony going "hey, that looks like a cool idea, let's slap some gyroscopes on this bad boy and call it a day." it wouldn't be so bad if this were a new development, but this has happened every single generation. anyone who isn't disgusted by this move has lost the right to use the term fanboy, because you've rationalized this to the point that you can't even see what's happening any more. if you'll remember, nintendo delayed showing the controller precisely because of fear of something like this. people said they were paranoid, that just because sony blatantly ripped off the analog stick and the rumble pack doesn't mean that they'll do something as blatantly dishonest as using motion sensor functionality after all of their fanboys derided it mostly for "making your arm tired". but look, they did. and now their legions of fanboys are defending them for it. this is sick.

OK for any one who is bashing Sony about the controller let's keep a few things in mind.First the Wii controller is a free form controller. It's designed way differently. The best example is in an FPS. You can use the Wii controller to aim directly at the screen, and the nunchuck to move (plus its also motion sensitive). That would be a bit akward with the PS3 controller. Second the Wii controller is expandable. You can connect different devices to it. But, in sonys defense the new controller is going to rock!!!!! Think about it. Say you're playing Tourist Trophy. Instead of using the analog to lean on a side you can acutally lean!!!!! If you think about it most of us already have the reaction to lean to try to nake a tight corner but nothing happens. ith this new desight no it will make a difference!!!!1 Good move Sony I like it!!!!!

WFCxTigerTank77 i agree 100%!!! ouf atleast somebody says something smart!! probably the bigest mistake i have ever done in my life is buying the 360 thinkinn it's next-gen. I'm not saying that 360 is crap, but it's not next-gen at all. PS3 is abviously the real next-gen. im getting rid of it and buying the PS3. dont be afraid MS fanboys, just move on, choose the best! THE PS3!! Don't loyal to a company that doesnt care about their customers. go with a company that doesnt care about spending millions and million to develope their console's potentiels like Sony did. anyways good luck to both. MGS4 ROCKS!!!

Alright thats it I cannot take the stupidity anymore! Wahh Sony ripped us off, wahh Shut up for the love of god! THIS IS HOW TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES. YOU TAKE OLD IDEAS AND APPLY THEM TO NEW ONES AND ADAPT THEM TO YOUR NEEDS. Besides its not like MS and nintendo havent ripped off sony... Hypocritic fan boys. And another thing. PS3 may have taken some 360 and some Wii(*snickers*) ideas, but they're combining them to make a batter package, which is why the MS and Nintendo fan-boys are worried, cause they know PS3 will own. Sure blu-ray is a risk, but do you think the top Sony Scientists, technicians, and board members would have put it in the PS3 if they thought it would fail? NO! Why do u think it took so long for the PS3 to come out? Testing! MS threw out the 360 way to soon just to try and combat with the PS3, which has had a year or two more of planning and R+D. Any person with intelligence... or someone who doesn't TyPe Lyk DIIS, can tell that one of the main driving factors behind the quick transition from X-Box to X-box 360 was an act of desparation in precurser to the PS3 It's a simple tactic. Get the people used to your product, and the newer, better one wont look as good... even though by all means it will be better. I'm not saying 360 sucks... it's a good system, but if Microsoft had collected more data from the X-box, they could have made the 360 better. Oh and don't grill Gamespot for their reviews. If you dont like them, go somewhere else. They know what they're talking about a hell of alot more than you do. I also would like to add that with Sony's New online system, X-box live is going down! Now Shut up. Shut up! SHUT UP about the rip off crap! Whining doesn't help anything!

As much of a sony fan as I am, I'm quite disappointed. Not the fact that it copied the menu button, nor the fact for the trigger buttons as well as the motion feature, those are irrelevant. But taking off the rumble pack? The only greatness to ever befall sony playstation's controller, now in the pits. The only enjoyment when playing a game and feeling the rumble from what has happened. Well nintendo boys, add another fan boy club member to your list (please don't I was just kidding), for I have decided to join in on buying a "wii". Not for the sole purpose of the possibilities of future "h-games" if you know what I mean. But for the excitement and enjoyment of what is "new" as they said and not "next".

damn!, so it is confirmed that there'll be no rumble feature, big mistake sony has made!! no games will feel the same now, i'd loved! the rumble feature I could care less about this "motion sensor". i cant picture myself playing nex-gen PS3 games like i use to play NES mario games back when i was 7yrs old, moving the controller up and down trying to jump with mario.. no way.

Clearly Sony is a biter, they took N64's Analog stick and Rumble pack ideas, now there taking 360's home button, xbox's analog triggers, and the Wii's motion sensors and whole gameplay concept, and this is why I hate Sony

it looks like a great controller, but i cant get over the feeling that they screwed originality with their boomerang controller to go the easy route with this one......... it may be great, but its not new, and most of all, originality is what we want in a new system.

Yeah as a Sony fan i still feel that Sony ripped way to much off of Nintendo......For the first time in a long time i was hoping Nintendo would actually do something right and SOny literally just ripped it out of their hands....and it seems Sony is just becoming like Every other Console Maker and ripping off of everyone as well. But the fact that they dont have a rumble feature is also kinda retarded...i mean Warhawk is gonna be pathetic without that. And i hope that they have an off switch or something because im not gonna be that energized every time i play Warhawk to move my controller all over the place. Buti hope that they do add a rumble feature. Ans whats with the absence of Killzone 2....

I think the usb plug on the controller might be for a rumble pack like the n64s one lol....I think they could at least make the ps3 controller shiny like the play3 itself cuz its kinda weird to have a plastic controller and the console all superb

Man, "They stole this, they stole that" crap has got to go, if you really want to get technical, everything was stolen from the Atari, or older systems, blah blah. The fact is that no one knows, or can prove that the PS3 stole from the Wii, or that this system took items from that. I'm sure we're going to see a lot of cool innovative games with the new controller like Ape Escape was for the Dual-Shock when it first released. I'm just glad I have my classic, best of the best control style, in my opinion.

Well, seems like Sony will stick with the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Not quite sure why anyone would complain about a company adding more features. We're the ones winning in the end with better products to choose from. Also, isn't Wii's motion sensing light based, requiring it to be aimed at the screen, while Sony's uses gyroscopes? This should allow a greater field of motion in PS games that use it. I can see how rumble and gyroscopes wouldn't go well together, but rumble has been getting a little stale in my opinion.

Its not that big of a deal that they took the idea from Nintendo. Sony's controller is designed more like the controllers we're used to, so it'll be good for more traditional things with a bit of a twist. Unlike the Sony controller, The Wii controller is designed totally around the movement. Thats the reason its in two parts and looks like a stick, its easier to swing around and point. They won't function the same way, so I don't think Nintendo fans need to be worried about it.

They ripped no-one off, they're just using the ideas of the biggest idiots, who do come up with great ideas, but can't even make decent controllers with those ideas... Wii will suck, 360 isn't all that it was promised, sony is gonna make it all right again... They might have taken ideas from others, bot they will use them CORRECLY

I wish sony would make a different controller more suitable for FPS. They also need to lose the stupid movement censor and get back the rumble. A regular direction pad limits movement to 8 different dirrections (this sucks). The controller does have some cool features such as the player number indicator. Another good point for keeping the same design is so its more backwards compatible friendly. OVERALL im dissapointed that there is no rumble and its still not FPS friendly.

It looks pretty nice though i think not having the rumble will take some getting used to. Also, i agree with emo_worm in saying, "im gonna go insane if i hear another fanboy say they ripped them off." Companes are gonna use ideas from other companes, it's just how the busness works, and don't for get that sony interduced the CD with the PS, and now nintendo and microsoft uses it. Sony is also gonna be the first to use the blue-ray, so stop bashing systems just because they are similre to another system.

I wonder why they can't just put rumble in? It's not like all games are going to usr the motion detection. So put the rumble in and make it un available in games that require motion detection, because personally i really like rumble.

The PS3' new controller will usher in a new era of gaming. Why? Because unlike Nintendo's Wii, the playstation 3 will appeal to a far larger audience. The software will be there as the demand will clearly be there. Long live Sony Playstation and its expert execution of all new ideas. (Rumble in PSone controllers, Eyetoy, Force feedback steering wheels and high quality Light Guns) : )

I really want another controller, not a PS2 or even PSX controller, even if it's features are taken from other machines. At least it's better than the old controller for the PS3, but this is still a thumbs down for Sony. Re-use of the old controller for the PS2 was okay, but not the PS3, I truly wish Sony could actually innovate on itself rather than being "inspired" by other companies, let's hope the games actually try to be fun rather than just good looking.

All sony does is copy nintendo. List: Rumble feature Joy/Analog Stick Motion sensoring controller The list probably goes on. Sony could atleast copy nintendo, and make it a GOOD copy instead of a crappy one. Moving the PS3 controller around WILL NOT feel comfortable, did you see that guy in the sony conference, when he used the controller? He was pretty much flying himself, rather than the game. I await the next pathetic attempt by sony to copy nintendo, and hey, even microsoft maybe.
