Dragon's Dogma Sequel in Discussion, But Nothing Decided Yet

"Thanks for your interest in the series!"

While Capcom doesn't have any official plans at the moment to make another Dragon's Dogma game, producer Minae Matsukawa says in a new interview that a true sequel has not been ruled out. In fact, Matsukawa tells PC Gamer that the idea often comes up during internal discussions.

No Caption Provided

"Thanks for your interest in the series!" Matsukawa said. "The Dragon's Dogma development team members often talk about the possibility of a sequel. We'd love to hear the opinions and feedback from players of the upcoming PC port of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, as that will increase the chances that we can look into the possibility of continuing the series."

Dark Arisen is an updated and expanded version of the 2012 RPG Dragon's Dogma. It arrived for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2013, while the PC edition debuts on January 15.

If a Dragon's Dogma sequel is to happen, it could be made by the team that made the original. Matsukawa confirms that the team is still largely intact; they also made Dragon's Dogma Online, a free-to-play game that launched last year for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC in Japan.

As of September 30, 2015, Capcom had sold 2.3 million Dragon's Dogma games. The franchise's contributions to Capcom's bottom line may be greater than that, however, as Dragon's Dogma Online offers a number of items for purchase via its microtransaction business model.

The full PC Gamer interview covers other topics like the origin of the Dragon's Dogma series, its influences, and the team's thoughts about the PC gaming market.

Not sure why the hell they are even questioning it, Capcom is full on weird. They waste money trying to rinse the crap out of Resident Evil and more Resident Evil and don't even acknowledge a brand new IP and then capitalize on it by having something ready to go year two on the new consoles. Nothing says Capcom is nothing more than a shell of a company, they waste money on F2P game Deep Down that was announced 3 years ago, still nothing to show.

They put out Dragons Dogma Online which runs on a modified DD engine, which isn't bad but it's full of low resolution textures and weak visuals. Still looks like a PS3 title with sharper main avatar visuals. Good base but the world isn't as well realized as it can be, I would love to get into Dragon's Dogma online myself just to hack, slash and clamber all over foes. My thing is I do not wish to play a free game, I would rather sit in and play a full release title like the original game and room for DLC that expands the game story.

DD has the best combat I have ever experienced in a game, so visceral, real time and engaging. Having another game with more story, more dragon types and more sub species and enemies and more shifts in enemies when it's night time. Capcom should put more stock in new IP's that have promise. Resident Evil, DMC and the others need to take a hiatus. They are also wasting time in reinvigorating franchises like Mega Man and not these HD updates of old mega man games but a full on new realization of Mega Man X a slightly more mature Mega Man but with more mechanics in a 3 dimensional world, I mean they still have the DMC 3 engine which would work well in a mega man beat em up if modified to be co-op. Contract the 3D action adventure engine kings at Platinum games, Bayonetta 2's engine is so excellent and I can see Mega Man X doing combos and getting variations and enders based on abilities you acquire from enemies. Including permanent, semi permanent and disposable abilities. Come now Capcom, sitting on a gold mine of IP's and doing nothing but focusing on the same dead horses of RE and DMC. They completely decimated a franchise with promise in Lost Planet, what's next?

@SavageEvil: Yeah but Street Fighter V, ya know?

I think Monster Hunter could have been a lot more popular if they had kept it on Playstation.

@el_swanno: Ugh, don't remind me. SF is Capcom's go to night crawler. Give the new IP's a chance, Dragons Dogma with MH system of hunting and missions with co-op online and couch would be a dream for me. I am patiently awaiting another home console MH game, Tri was good but man was is deplorably ugly, but the combat and hunting was by far so engaging and with 3 other members it became an obsession to hunt for monsters and be wary when during a hunt another dreaded moron like Deviljho comes out to f*k the entire hunt up and everyone scrambles for dear life. Good times and so many crafted weapons and armors. Constantly dreaming of the day the idiots at Capcom started playing the games they put out.

So this is basically admitting the disgraceful F2P MMO they made is not a sequel.

So they deliberately made a game people didn't want. Dragon's Dogma 2 should have immediately began development once they saw success, but this is Capcom, who thinks games aren't successful unless they sell 4 million copies and have been re-released 18 times first.

@Thanatos2k: I'm still surprised that they weren't going to make a SFV for a long time until Sony came, money in hand.

Capcom is crazy, that's for sure.

Dragons Dogma really surprised me. Sure it had its flaws like a weak story and characters but the flexible class system and amazing combat more than made up for it. I can't think of a game that did giant monster battles as good as Dragons Dogma. Shadow of the Colossus is probably close but those were more living puzzles.

I would love to see a sequel. Glad to hear its not ruled out.

@CapmJim: Weak story? My opinion might be in a certain way biased since I'm a huge DD fanboy, but over the years I realised that the only people badmouthing the story in this game were those who paid zero attention to it in the first place. Because the core story in DD was nothing short of amazing.

Please let this happen, DD was probably my favorite game of last gen, it might have needed some polish but the gameplay was amazing, nothing beats climbing on the back of a dragon whilst trying to kill it, and its supprising that no other games have ripped off the gameplay, no other games come close to the combat system in DD.

I absolutely loved Dragons Dogma, flaws and all. I would love to see them refine and add to the sequel.

@Neurosnap: can't agree with you more. It was a really memorable fun game, that I felt was too short. Could have used a sequel years ago.
I don't want Dragon's Dogma Online in the west as much as I want a full fledged, single player + coop perhaps, polished, long, vast and varied DD experience. I hope a sequel will arrive in the near future and won't disappoint. It will have to be on a new engine I think, MT Frameworks showing it's age.

@GunEye: I agree the storyline was short in the original version, however the Dark Arisen expanision with the added levels of dragon forging was great. (I love the grinding/leveling of the gear) Like you said I want a proper single player + coop DD2. I feel like you could even keep the pawn system basically the same (tweaks of course) and allow a friend to either jump in and take one over or use their own. There are so many things they could expand upon I just cant wait.

@Neurosnap: that's a good idea basically. I saw some game play videos of 'let's play dragons dogma online' yesterday and I had to say I didn't really like it.

Sure it looks better than ANY MMO I have seen, though I am NOT a fan of MMOs at all. However, it didn't register to me as DD because it was too chaotic, far too crowded and hectic.

Seeing 10 would be Arisens raking down monsters with tons of health or killing a boas together - didn't felt like teamwork.

Sure it is cool how 7 of them climbed his body and others casted spells, but it didn't feel like real teamwork - just a mess of everybody doing their own thing.

Furthermore, lore-wiss being an Arisen suppose to be unique. Having infinite Arisens at any given time feels cheap.

Now hopping in as your pawn for coop or your friend/host's pawn - that's a brilliant idea. Because it will mean only 1 Arisen doing his single player game Dark Souls style, and it will mean less annoying grinding. You just play for fun.

Heck they can even give yoy random pawns to play to keep it interesting so you won't be a munchkin.

That was and limiting coop to 3 or 4 max - you will have to do proper teamwork, or you will get your butt kicked. Each will have to do his thing.

Almost like a mission mode: you put a 'soul sign', you are given a random pawn or take the shoes of the hosts pawn. They tell you "you are a Rogue with this this and this - now help us!!

@GunEye: yeah even while playing the original I thought jumping in and controlling my friends pawn was a no brainier. Maybe since it was a new property they were being reserved with the coop/multiplayer aspect of it. Either way I hope it finds itself into DD2 especially since it seems to be an almost unanimous request from DD fans.

I definitely want to stick with a party of 4 max. It really made me feel like it was an elite unit running out into the world. There were just enough members to strong, but not overpowering.

Either way you can be sure I'll get this day one if it comes out lol

@Neurosnap: Agreed. 4 party members, with the option of having them remain as pawns (for instance host, player, AI,AI) would be perfect! I generally was pleased with the AI anyhow. It was doing its job. I would be perfect for 2/3/4 player coop sessions, or just random short jump-ins with friends/strangers.

When I saw the DD-online gameplay, I just thought to myself: man I can't tell what's going on. I can pinpoint on a certain tactic or on a person doing some heroic move that saves the day or contributes the team in a certain manner. Point is its - its just a mess.

4 player team remains faithful and friendly to the 4-player team (host + up to 3 pawns) system that has been on DD1. It makes sense that every pawn will have a certain role, strengths and weakness, and will compliment his peers - fulfilling different roles in combat.

-How about the up and coming PC version of DD Dark Arisen?

I never bought Dark Arisen on the PS3, but I loved DD. I think the promise of 60fps and higher resolutions would be great. I wonder if users would be able to mod this game (can MT frameworks accept mods?) and I wonder if someone can make a COOP mod (unlikely but yeah..). To be honest I don't really like pc-mods anyway, I like playing the game as intended to be, without messing it up to much.

I think I am buying this as soon as I finish a game or two, or as soon as it goes on sale. Probably not day-1, not sure yet :D.

@GunEye: I definitely didn't have a problem with the AI either, and I was happy with my pawn 99% of the time. You just had to adjust the traits/skills every now and then. I'm sure Dark Arisen on the PC will be great, I played a couple hundred hours on the 360 version. And after talking with you I pretty sure I'm gonna go back and play it tonight too haha. But if you haven't played the Dark Arisen version yet I'm sure you'll love it if you like the original. The whole area has a different feel but it's a great addition to the game.

I thought Dragon's Dogma was pretty good tbh. It had plenty of flaws, but given time the devs could easily iron them out, and polish the questing and combat up a bit. It kinda reminds me of when I played Demon Souls and how much of an improvement Dark Souls was a fees years later. I have high hopes for any potential sequel.

Do it! And don't you dare put letterboxing on the console versions this time! Better yet, release the PC version at the same time so we can enjoy it without the console limitations.

I hope the game sells well on PC since we all know that's what will make them decide to make a sequel. But if Dragon's Dogma Online is doing so well then they might not bother :/.

It has the best combat ever, I hope more people support it!

Would absolutely love a sequel AND DD Online to make it here to the West. DD was one of the most underrated games of last gen. Best combat system of any action RPG I've even played. Being attacked from the skies by a griffon and then grappling it while it tries to get away was a sensation I never felt before or since. If you haven't played this game yet, it is absolutely incredible.

Put it this way: after I played DD, I could never go back to playing Skyrim. I was hoping The Witcher 3 would have the same combat system but it didn't come even close. Just compare a griffon fight in DD to the ones in Witcher 3 and you'll know what I meant.
