You'll often find yourself rescuing innocents in peril in Dragon's Dogma 2. Still, there's one fella who seems to be content with his lot, until you tell him about a particular hobby that he likes. Here's our guide on how to complete The Caged Magistrate quest in Dragon's Dogma 2.

How to complete The Caged Magistrate in Dragon's Dogma 2

The Caged Magistrate quest comes from Commander Brant, an ally who provides all the main missions in the capital city of Vernworth. Here's what you need to do to finish the objectives:

  • You'll automatically receive the Gaol Key from Brant.
  • Enter the Vernworth Dungeon and speak with Magistrate Waldhar. You may need a disguise just to be safe.
  • Help Kendrick and Malcolm so you can gain access to the ruins.
  • Convince Waldhar to leave with you.

Where to find a disguise

Note that The Dragon's Dogma 2 The Caged Magistrate quest does not explicitly say that you need a disguise. However, Brant mentions in a dialogue that you shouldn't be spotted by the prison guards. Here's what we did during our playthrough:

  • Before The Caged Magistrate, we first tackled a quest called Disa's Plot. It entails following one of Brant's soldiers to enter the palace.
  • We found a chest in the kitchen, and it contained the Marcher's Helm, Marcher's Armor, and Marcher's Cuisses--basically the armor set worn by the guards at Vernworth.
  • We had all these gear pieces equipped when we did The Caged Magistrate quest. As of the time of this writing, we're unable to confirm if this is actually required, or if you'd get discovered by guards if you're wearing different attire.

How to enter the gaol and find Waldhar

The task now is to enter the dungeons. There are a couple of entrances:

  • Head to the east of the noble's quarters, then up the second floor of Baldwin's Estate. Use the balcony railings to jump to the scaffolding, which leads to a storm drain.
  • From the Vernworth Slums, follow the southern path along the cliffside. Jump and mantle on the ledges to reach the gate.
You can enter the gaol via the Noble's Quarter (left) or the Slums (right).

You'll find Magistrate Waldhar in one of the cells. You can unlock it and talk to him. It seems that he's resigned to his fate, and he doesn't want to leave the prison at all. The only way he'll actually consider escaping with you is if you can tell him of a location that has a lot of books.

Note: If you talk to Waldhar several times, he'll hand over the Towering Earth grimoire. This is one of the grimoires required by Trysha and Myrddin.

Where to find Kendrick and Malcolm

The next step in The Caged Magistrate in Dragon's Dogma 2 is to find a location with a lot of tomes. There's actually one that's hidden in Vernworth:

  • Report back to Brant and he'll mention Kendrick of The Gracious Hand.
  • Make your way to the Vernworth Slums. There's an NPC named Kendrick in front of The Gracious Hand building. Keep donating money until you're told about a boy named Malcolm.
  • To learn of Malcolm's location, talk to the three kids near or inside The Gracious Hand building. It's then revealed that Malcolm went through the small opening in the ruins.
  • Your party and Kendrick will enter the ruins. It might be dark down below, but there's nothing to worry about since there are no tough monsters.
  • Upon reaching the inner chamber, the group will meet up with Malcolm. The child will then lead you to a repository that's full of tomes.
Kendrick is looking for someone who can take care of the tomes.

Returning to Waldhar and Brant

Return to Waldhar in the prison, and tell him about the ruins beneath the slums. He'll happily leave his cell, and you can escort him outside. Just follow the marker since it leads to a side path to the Vernworth Slums.

Report back to Brant and tell him the good news. This completes The Caged Magistrate quest in Dragon's Dogma 2. You'll also receive 1x Ferrystone and 7,000 gold for your efforts. Note that there are other tasks that you need to complete in the capital, including attending the masquerade ball and discovering the Nameless Village.
