Dragon Age: Inquisition sees return of multiple player races

Third Dragon Age game will allow player to pick their race, as well as introduce mounts to the series for the first time.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will allow players to create characters from multiple races, developer BioWare has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

The developer spoke about the next entry of the fantasy RPG series in the latest issue of Game Informer, saying that the studio was addressing fan criticism of the second game for the sequel.

The original Dragon Age: Origins allowed players to create a character from a range of races. Its sequel, Dragon Age II, forced players into the role of a human named Hawke.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will also introduce mounts into the series, and reintroduce customisable armour.

In the game, the player will take the role as the head of the Inquisition, an organisation formed to confront evil and corruption in the land of Thedas.

"As the game begins, the Inquisition has plenty to investigate. War, scheming, and political strife have left the major power groups in the Dragon Age universe unable to operate effectively, which is a problem when a hole opens in the sky and demons begin pouring out. Players must fight back against the demonic threat while exploring a vast world and consolidating power for the growing Inquisition," said Game Informer's report.

"Large and varied environments, customisable armor, and the return of multiple player races are just a few of the ways BioWare is addressing feedback from previous titles in order to shape a new future for the franchise."

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2014.

Casey Hudson said about the endings.

Have them kneel before a demon spirit with these options

Green: You and demons become integrated and meshed into one species

Blue: Control the Demons and become dark lord of the 9 hells

Red: Destroy the demons and everyone you love and multiple castles and dwellings. Elves don't survive.

Seems like pretty good ending choices. Let's roll with it guys

@Riddick123 They are all the same ending. You become a demon and either kill everyone now or later, that's all I get from those "options".

What was unique about the first one was not just selecting the characters race and class but also you start in a different origin when you begin the game I hope they do that too.

The news about the combat are great:

  • "Wants to make the action less frantic and more deliberate, returning to more tactics-oriented approach to encounters. Big return to party-based tactics

  • Part of that is slowing down speed of attacks, more important is designing enemies that force you to examine the battlefield and choose actions carefully

  • Battles veer away from button mashing toward a structure where observation and reaction take precedence

  • Instead of swarming enemies, your foes have specialized roles; work together and force you to size up the battlefield

  • You won’t regularly see waves of new bad guys appearing out of nowhere to extend encounters"
I'll post this link again(thanx Gagula94), 'cause it's very informative:

@0m39AX Sounds promising, but this is Bioware we're talking about. I'll make up my mind after seeing the game being played. :)

@0m39AX THIS sounds great. I was about to say, I didn't really mind being forced to be human (I always choose to be a human anyway), or even not being able to pick my party's armor.

But I am very happy to read about the changes you listed here.

@godfather830 @0m39AX I miss the management. Origins spaced out gear so well that the management of your party wasn't tedious. I could deal with being human, but I definately want party customization.

I'd usually be optimistic to such news but since it's Bioware, I'm going to be really cautious. No racial option, armor customization, romance, spell or weapon will matter if the story will suck badly, which is Bioware's weak spot today and such event has a high chance of occurance.

"when a hole opens in the sky and demons"... aside from that in-eloquent incentive, I do certainly hope there is as marked a return to the "origins" game-style as possible. I enjoyed the second game. but it never had the effect and impact as the first in the franchise. I'm not 100% sure the effectiveness of a Mount being a game-piece considering how "on rails" most bioware maps tend to be though? regardless, I will stay interested.

@TheGreyArea It seems pretty solid that this will be more open world. They are going to compete with the Witcher 3 and that's not going to happen if you have to slowly traipse through an endless field.

@shingui5 She improves a lot as a character outside of the games. Check out The Silent Grove, Those Who Speak, and Until We Sleep. Alistair, Varric, and Sten are also in them and you get a lot of backstory about Isabela that makes her a lot more understandable.

i pretty much refuse to purchase materials of a game, that take place out of it. It's a principle where i feel a game's story should be wholly inclusive, and not outsourced to some third-rate books.

Awww would you just look at that....people still crying over DA2...yes go on and continue to 'pre-order' your games and buy it day 1 without even taking a glance at the reviews...bunch of blind fools....I always wait for the metacritic and the avg. user score before buying ANY game.....I haven't pre-ordered GTA V,I haven't pre-ordered PS4....I will never pre order any game or buy it day one no matter how good it looks...

Does anyone know if character origins will return in this?

By reading:

'In the game, the player will take the role as the head of the Inquisition, an organisation formed to confront evil and corruption in the land of Thedas.'

I'd assume not :(

I still can't get my mind around why they would make a sequel to such a successful game so different from the original. If it's not broke, don't fix it. DA2 had a decent premise in teeing up the holy war (Dammit Anders!), I honestly didn't care about the combat changes, and I think the supporting characters were well done but to shrink the world, narrow the story, restrict customization, and limit the character creation options just seems boneheaded.

@sieg6529 I prefer series that like to change it's ways.Games who take the route "If it aint broke dont fix it" are series like Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, etc.

@NikIvRu Well CoD has been broken for a long time but I'll still challenge your assertion that you prefer games to change. Obviously you like AC (your avatar tipped me off). Do you like it for what it is, or do you like it for what you imagine it could be? My guess is you like it for what it is, and what IT IS hasn't changed fundamentally since Altair was getting sand in his crack. I'm not saying I don't want any changes, I'm saying we want directional improvements on a proven formula (better graphics, new story, new abilities, etc). An Assassin's Creed game that fundamentally changes it's ways is called Dishonored.

@sieg6529 The fact that in DA2 the plot is you're refuges making a city the home for your family and yourself. Over the years you deal with strife and keep the city together and survinig.

Much better than the "save the world/princess from x bad thing" that we play in EVERY game nowadays. But there was so much backlash that the industry will stick to the rehash plot in a never ending cycle...

@neroist I have no problem with the refugees in a city setting, I quite liked the premise. The problem is that they gave us a small city with small surroundings that were rehashed over and over. Maybe my expectations were set too high by Assassin's Creed 2, but I expect a game based in a city to be more than a few small preset areas.

Dragon Age 2's biggest downfall, in my view, are the replicated environments. The characters are pretty good, and Jo Wyatts' Hawke is outstanding. Combat and animations are more impressive, visually and in terms of raw action. I guess a few subtleties of tactical nature got lost. But I have played this game several times, and went from disappointment to appreciation. It's the game I have replayed the most, this generation.

Sounds like they really heard the criticism, I mean, they would have to since that's all we talk about. Hopefully they where able to take enough away from "da2 iz sh*t" to improve on the formula. I do think this game will be fun.

Dragon Age 2 was a different approach, that many didn't like. I felt stifled by being in the same town for the whole game. However if you're defending the town it makes sense.

There is a market for that type of story and game, it seemed to have so many feelers out there that played into the overall plot, it made the game a bit of a mess. I digress, choosable races eh whatever. In these games options are nice I guess, its more about the story than the options.
