Dracula Is Getting Weird: A Futuristic Sci-Fi Western Is In The Works

Here's some strange and unexpected news: Universal is moving forward with a new interpretation of Dracula in a futuristic sci-fi Western movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has hired Nomadland's Chloe Zhao to write, direct, and produce a new Dracula movie with a unique twist.

THR said the story will be an "original, futuristic, sci-fi Western." The film will touch on "being on society's fringes."

"Chloe's singular lens shines a light on stories of the overlooked and misunderstood," Universal president Peter Cramer said. "We are thrilled to be working with her as she reimagines one of the most iconic outsider characters ever created."

2021 marks the 90th anniversary of Universal's classic and iconic first take on Dracula back in 1931. Universal has been trying to create more monster movies in recent years, and it had success with 2020's Invisible Man from Saw director Leigh Whannell and starring Elisabeth Moss.

Universal's "Monsterverse" films haven't all been hits, however, as 2017's The Mummy starring Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe flopped and may have lost almost $100 million.
