Doom 4 still exists: Bethesda unveils Doom beta

Doom 4 now just called Doom; beta access included with Wolfenstein: The New Order preorders.

Remember Doom 4? It's not dead! And it's now just called Doom, presumably. And there's going to be a beta.

Anyone who preorders a copy of the upcoming Wolfenstein: The New Order will gain access to the Doom beta. But Bethesda isn't saying when that beta might be. Or what platforms it will be on. It is saying, however, that you'll need to be over 18 to participate. Sounds like it might be a bit gory, then.

More information can be found on Bethesda's Doom beta site.

Bethesda said last April that an earlier version of Doom 4 had been scrapped and the project was being rebooted. "An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect," said Bethesda marketing man Pete Hines at the time.

"As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know."

Wolfenstein: The New Order will be released for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC on May 20.

See this is fucking bullshit, because I pre-ordered it, which I rarely do. And I thought you got access to it immediately, I ordered via PSN-PS4. I like Wolfenstein a lot, but they better be putting it out within the next week afterwards or i will harass that fucking site till no end!!! You don't advertise a Beta, and then say oh, it will be out at a later date. That could be a GD year from now!!! Or perhaps I'm the idiot who just got hustled. Well never again I assure you. Assholes.

I wonder if they're going for a-hundred-enemies-at-a-time ultra violence like Doom 1 and 2 or for the more subtle terrors of Doom 3 ...

<< LINK REMOVED >> err...you could;t be more wrong, do some research into the company you thought you knew. The "id" is the primitive and instinctive component of personality, this word was coined by Sigmund Freud, id is their name, not I.D, the acronym for identification. Why do you think on cutscenes for their logo a brain sometimes appears? You're welcome.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Id is actually an acronym for In Demand or something of that nature. Dates back to some project the founders were a part of circa 1990. John Carmack capitalizes the "I", so I'll go with that.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Holy poo, who would've thought we're both right, thank you for sharing that Brassman! I had no idea it was an acronym as well, like I said, they've shown a brain on their logo screens, and always refer to the company as Id not I.D, I just dug this up though:

<< LINK REMOVED >>

Look about 1/3 of the way down the page for this:

The company was originally called Ideas From the Deep but they decided to shortened it to simply id, which stands for "in demand," and is pronounced as in "did" or "kid." The name also had another meaning which is referring to id, one of the three parts (The other two being ego and super-ego) of the brain that behaves by the pleasure principle.

I'm an 67 year-old guy who has played over 500 video games, mostly shooters and action RPGs, but I've never played online. Never played in a multiplayer game. What makes online multiplayer so exciting for young players? What's so great about it? What's the deal with multiplayer?

I'm 67 and not-such-a hardcore player because I am too old to compete against youngsters, and frankly not interested in that. At my age I'm not that sociable. However, maybe if there was a league of those my own age I might feel different, but how many gamers are there over age 50? Or even over age 40 much less over age 60 like myself? I've played all the games you mentioned and 500 shooters more but all in single player campaign. I prefer the story mode and not just running around aimlessly. The companies are pushing multiplayer because it's much more profitable and far easier and cheaper than developing new IPs all the time. New new stories are very expensive and very risky.

<< LINK REMOVED >> multiplayer offers more replayability. You can play thousand matches on the same level, and it will be a fresh and exciting expierence every time. Singleplayer is usually fun only once, maybe 2-3 times if the game isn't painfully linear.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's just one of those things people enjoy doing, like competitive sports. The interaction with other players gives more longevity to the game and allows players to get more value for what they purchased.

No problem. But I rent them and have never been good at competitive sports. I prefer the loner single campaign movie experience.

@jgarbuz I think the big difference is do you want to compete with others in a battle of human wits, or do you want to feel like a hero in a movie like experience? They both offer great fun, in unique ways.

Well, I'm 67 years old and I'm not going to start competing with 16 year old kids, and yes, I do prefer the movie-like experience. My adrenaline pumps fast enough in a battle with bots, To me I prefer to think of "video games" as the movies of the 21st century. Why watch a movie when you can be in a movie?

The original Doom was what got me into video games about 15 years ago, and specifically into first person shooters. Before that they were mostly 2-D arcade and adventure games, which is what some in the industry want us to go back to as they are cheap to produce. But Doom was the beginning of the "interactive movie."

Bethesda Softworks is actually the publishing entity, with Bethesda Game Studio as the dev unit and ZeniMax Media as the owner/shell entity that connects all of the companies and studios together.

But yeah id's still a discrete studio as is Arkane -

id's people weren't all sacked when the it was acquired, they acquired the studio cause they wanted the IP's and the people, though one has to wonder at Hollenshead and Carmack's departures last year.

While the 12 year old me is extremely excited at the prospect of another Doom, the jaded, weary 30 year old me worries that they could be using our nostalgia against us. It happened with Alien: Colonial Marines and many other games in the past. I will try not to get excited at all until I've seen game play footage. My two biggest concerns are the fact that RAGE was a let down after all the hype and John Carmack left the company, so I really don't know what direction ID is going to take.

@Psycold

Lets hope they take a direction back towards the original Dooms. A little goes a long way with retro shooters, but I think the genre still has some room.

And I don't think I'm alone in saying that id was fooling anyone with their awkward takes on post half-life cinematic context with Doom3 and weird grab-bag 'depth' with RAGE's many gimmicky gameplay systems.

Great! But I really wish that they'd do another Quake or maybe even a Wolfenstein: Enemy Territories 2. ID was the king of FPS Multiplayer in the 90's. Then they just quit. It was like they feared their own success. Come on ID, don't be afraid.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, then Half Life and CS happened, which evolved FPS past that point. ID never really adapted since. I would say Quake 3 was their only good game since Half Life changed the industry (Doom 3 was alright..but not nearly as good as I expected).

The new Wolfenstein game looks awesome. I'm hoping that they do a similar job with Doom.

a part of me wishes they simplify the game like DOOM 2. Seriously...don't care about the story. Just give us levels and monsters to shoot at. Old school style.

<< LINK REMOVED >> We might just get that. After Doom 3 I think Id will look at what made Doom fun and emphasize those points. Ofcourse there will be a plot and story but ideally it will be in the backburner.

My Marine buddy just recently had to leave to be on an aircraft carrier for 8 months straight and asked me to put a bunch of stuff on his portable hard drive before he left, that was the first thing I gave him.

Why does it take so long as in when its done?. I cant see a game like this taking more then 3 years and I bet they could do it in over a year. They like to just advertise it. Look at Duke Nukem.

Please don't force the player to spend an entire afternoon customizing your character, choosing race, outfits and abilities, or use what seems like hundreds of hours plowing through dialogues, collecting info and acquiring side missions. I know some people get off on that, but yawning through some Skyrimesque gameplay would be the absolute series killer. Let's shoot. Demons. Now.

<< LINK REMOVED >> This is Doom, there is no space for those examples you say, and I doubt id want's to move the franchise that far away from the origins, but we should realize we are in the 21st century, we are going to see new mechanics, we just have to ask those new mechanics have nothing to do with rpgs, or stupid social personalizations that have been so common this couple of past years.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Probably a single player beta as the game is a reboot. We're likely still a few years off the game releasing so they probably want to gauge fan reaction to the direction it is heading in. Think of it less like a beta and more like iD Software throwing the game to the wolves in the hopes of getting either positive or negative feedback.
