Don't Like Rey's Parentage in Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Director Says It Could Change

The subject of Rey's parents is "still open" thanks to JJ Abrams taking on Episode IX.

In the aftermath of the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, debates about many things in the film have raged on. While some fans loved the movie the the direction it takes the Star Wars universe in, while others are vehemently opposed to director Rian Johnson's entry in the franchise and how it treats some of the stories set up by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi follow.

Now Playing: Star Wars: The Last Jedi Review (No Spoilers!) - Will The Past Finally Die?

One major sticking point among many is the identity of Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parents. After The Force Awakens, fans theorized many different possibilities about who could be her mom and dad--from Luke Skywalker to Obi Wan Kenobi, to even Han Solo and Leia Organa. One answer many didn't expect though was they they were nobodies.

That's exactly who they were, though. As revealed by Rey and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in The Last Jedi, they were junk traders from the planet Jakku, who possibly sold her for alcohol money. Is that the final word, though? According to Johnson, not necessarily.

"Anything's still open, and I'm not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it," he tells The Huffington Post. Still, if Abrams and Terrio decide to change course and have the moment amount to Kylo misleading Rey, it would be a very strange choice to make, especially when you consider Johnson's reasoning.

Were Rey revealed to have a familiar connection to characters fans already know, the director explains that "it would be the big 'I am your father' twist [from The Empire Strikes Back]."

"The easy thing would be, 'Yes, your parents are so and so and here's your place in the world. There you go,'" he says. "The hardest thing she could hear would be [...] 'No, you're not going to get the answer. This is not going to define you. You're going to have to find your own place in this world. Kylo is going to use that even as leverage to try and make you feel insecure, and you're going to have to stand on your own two feet.'"

As Johnson points out, there is an argument that can be made that Rey's parents being nobody important makes her a stronger character. For her, it's not about following or moving away from the path set out in front of her by a parent. In truth, her course is closer to that of Anakin Skywalker, who lived most of his early life as a slave before finding out he was strong with the Force.

Regardless, any answer is open to interpretation, especially to Abrams as he sets out writing Episode IX. Ridley has said that at this point, the next saga film will be her final appearance in the Star Wars movie franchise, meaning Rey's story will likely reach its conclusion in the the movie.

Now the question is whether her story will be massively changed in the process. Star Wars: Episode IX will be in theaters on December 20, 2019. Star Wars will next be on the big screen when Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Han Solo standalone film, arrives on May 25.

Ugh. The new Star Wars movies are awful. Rogue One was the only one worth watching. Way to ruin a good franchise, Disney.

Yet more proof that Disney doesn't care about telling a quality story more than providing FAN SERVICE!! Uh oh everyone, the fans didn't like what we wrote, better retcon everything and make her the son of DARTH VADER AND LUKE SKYWALKER AND OBI WAN KENOBI SOMEHOW!!!!

I'm quite happy Rey's parents weren't anyone we already knew, as I thought that would be predictable and nothing but fan-service. At the same time I wanted it to be a more interesting story than her being the daughter of no one in particular. But as I type that, I wonder if that makes her a pure product of the Force.

I would however like to know what made Snoke such a powerful wielder of the Force.

Honestly, I'm fine with them being nobodies. Not everyone in this franchise needs to be connected to everyone someway somehow.

@Zero_Maniac: At this stage I'd rather they take the simple route than to come up with some convoluted reason as to how Rey came to be yet another abandoned child of this universe. Most people expected her to be the daughter of either Obi-Wan, Luke or Leia; the two children who were separated from their parents at birth and the man who did it. To have any of them then abandon their own child would seem a bit like a bit of a piss-take.

There are plenty of things that I loved and hated in The Last Jedi, but one thing I hate is the actors and now even the writer/director trying to walk back their statements and choices in the face of criticism. I respected Mark Hamill's criticism about the portrayal of Luke in TLJ, especially how upfront he was about it to Rian Johnson, but he was a professional and agreed to the writer/director's vision for The Last Jedi. I believe Mark Hamill knows the character of Luke Skywalker better than Rian Johnson ever will. Hamill also knows Star Wars fans and anticipated that some would be outraged by TLJ. But what I don't respect was when he announced that he regretted making his criticisms public because they might've negatively affected TLJ's box office performance.

I don't agree with some of Rian Johnson's choices in TLJ, but him saying that his choice to make Rey's parents "nobodies" could be changed by JJ Abram in Episode IX is lame and cowardly. If he's ready to abandon his own creation because of the fans' reaction, he lacks artistic integrity. That's disgraceful. I would've respected him more if he'd said, "The Last Jedi is Star Wars canon. Luke is dead. Snoke is dead. Rey's parents were nobodies. Deal with it, nerds!"

If Rian Johnson isn't going to defend his own work, I'd actually support the proposal to declare The Last Jedi non-canon, hit the reset button, and let JJ Abrams either redo, reshoot, or recut Episode VIII into the sequel to The Force Awakens that he intended it to be.

#@reavern: Did you even read what you typed before posting? Johnson didn't say HE'S going to change Rey's lineage, he said Abrams MIGHT. Johnson was the director of this one movie, produced by Abrams and Kennedy. I'm sure he had some input on the direction the story took, but the ultimate decision about what story was told was above his pay-grade.

If Rey's lineage is retconned in Episode IX, that's got nothing to do with Johnson, so lay off him.

@PlatinumPaladin: I understand what Rian Johnson said. He basically said, "Don't freak out. JJ Abrams could change everything that you don't like from The Last Jedi in Episode IX."

I don't believe that JJ Abrams had a fully fleshed out plan for the New Trilogy. He basically just reimagined ANH with cloned characters, then fucked off, and left the trilogy to be completed by other writers and directors. If he actually had a plan, Kathleen Kennedy would've enforced it, because she's the Star Wars shot-caller now. She fired Colin Trevorrow over "creative differences" so if Rian Johnson had taken The Last Jedi off the rails that Abrams had laid down, she would've fired him. But there were no rails. Rian Johnson had to blaze his own trail and he discarded whatever he didn't like from TFA. Kennedy must've approved of his bold/controversial choices otherwise she would've intervened.

Obviously, it wasn't part of the plan for Trevorrow to get fired and Abrams to return to complete the trilogy. Now Abrams has to deal with Johnson's choices or somehow undo them. The quote from Johnson was acknowledging that Abrams might change the explanation about Rey's parents.

However, I think that's spineless because he's caving to criticism and saying that Abrams could undo his "mistakes" in Episode IX. Fans criticized the Prequels and TFA, but George Lucas and JJ Abrams at least stood by their (questionable) artistic choices, because they have integrity.

Of all the problems that need changing or even retconning for episode IX, Rey's parentage is not one I care about. I don't mind that she's of no major lineage, the problem is I would have liked to have discovered this WITH Rey instead of it being briefly glossed over and then never mentioned again.

I genuinely liked the movie... its not as bad as everyone says... but there sure are some problems with it.

1. Casino planet / side quest - RIP IT OUT!

2. Maz Kanata scene - RIP IT OUT!

3. Why not just tell your hero pilot your plan instead of letting him believe you have no plan? I understand it was a plot device... but it doesn't make sense and should have been rewritten.

4. Pull out the "funny" bits with the Porgs after Rey and Chewie leave Luke.

Other than that I really have no issue with it.

Snoke dying and remaining a mystery is fine... we didn't cry when the Emperor died in Episode VI and we didn't know anything about him. Luke dying the way he did was fine... I liked the bit with him staring into the 2 suns... basically the 1st scene we got when we were introduced to him 30+ years ago on Tattooine .

@whatsazerg: Luke dying the way he did was the only honorable way to end everyone's childhood hero since the late 70s. I'd like to see Mark Hamill's thoughts on that

@whatsazerg: Why are ppl comparing Snoke death with Emperor?

Emperor was the ultimate evil. He was the last boss of a trilogy. Killing him WAS the end of the OT!

Killing Snoke without any background, in the 2nd movie, making it a completely useless death like a stormtrooper dying, is not the same. NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Wasted the best character of the SW universe by simply make him disappear out of exhaustion. Making the most iconic good character, that enters the deathstar just because he believed he could save Vader, the Sith lord, ready to kill his nephew because he saw some dark in him? LIKE WTF?

Anyways, wont even try to analyze it here. There are literally THOUSANDS of videos in YT, from critics to fans that explain it why its sooooo disappointing as a SW movie.. Its not that its bad. Its disappointing.

@kokos1994: "There are literally THOUSANDS of videos in YT, from critics to fans that explain it why its sooooo disappointing as a SW movie"

And you and the whole 1990's batch of kids cannot think for yourselves right? I mean, who needs it, as long as there are videos on youtube to tell you how you should feel about pretty much anything...

This whole Snoke controversy is a bad joke I could see coming while I was still watching the movie. People bitched and moaned when The Force Awakens came out that Snoke was stupid and unnecessary. Now, people are bitching that the stupid and unnecessary character was killed off. Wasn't that supposed to be a good thing FOR YOU PEOPLE? No, suddenly people wanted to know his backstory, just because this isn't what the movie makers are giving you.

I sure have some problems with this movie, but getting Snoke out of the way is not one of them. And why people get so angry at Luke's death? It was pretty much given, after Han's in TFA.

TL; DR: Grow the f*ck up.

Personally the movie was bad but eh, opinions.

@wexorian: Question is whose vision is all of this? Lucas made the original 6 so even if it wasn't perfect he still held the best sense of internal logic.

Here I assume JJ Abrams (and the writers of course) set up some things, Rian decided they aren't so important so he glossed over, and JJ now has to pick up the pieces.

Marvel movieverse would be a mess if Feige wasn't making sure everything goes toward the right direction

I thought it was pretty obvious that her parents are clearly the two lead characters from Rogue One.

I mean, the timing is right, they were left behind, and those Star Cruisers that crashed through the force field into the planet look an awful lot like the crashed cruisers she was salvaging from. Just imagine global warming hit the planet afterwards.

But then, they might be be two different planets with different names and then I'm wrong. Shame, because it works well.

They went for sensationalism at the expense of coherency.

You may dislike the prequels, but at least they were measured in their actions and dialog and characterisations.

@so_hai: Personally, I don't mind the prequels because there was always to be a very finite number of them. They had a reason and you knew that even with the bad parts they're going to be more like experiments to fill in the gaps.

Here would be sort of interesting to speculate if IX was going to be the last, but you know it's not going to be. For Lucas this was a story, lifework he wanted to share. For Disney this is one of countless ways to earn money. They might as well say what Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed about giving up with the overarching plot. Vader might come back because he's popular and a notable character to have in a new story, it's an irrelevant restriction that he's dead.
