Don't Like Rey's Parentage in Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Director Says It Could Change

The subject of Rey's parents is "still open" thanks to JJ Abrams taking on Episode IX.

In the aftermath of the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, debates about many things in the film have raged on. While some fans loved the movie the the direction it takes the Star Wars universe in, while others are vehemently opposed to director Rian Johnson's entry in the franchise and how it treats some of the stories set up by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Now Playing: Star Wars: The Last Jedi Review (No Spoilers!) - Will The Past Finally Die?

One major sticking point among many is the identity of Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parents. After The Force Awakens, fans theorized many different possibilities about who could be her mom and dad--from Luke Skywalker to Obi Wan Kenobi, to even Han Solo and Leia Organa. One answer many didn't expect though was they they were nobodies.

That's exactly who they were, though. As revealed by Rey and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in The Last Jedi, they were junk traders from the planet Jakku, who possibly sold her for alcohol money. Is that the final word, though? According to Johnson, not necessarily.

"Anything's still open, and I'm not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it," he tells The Huffington Post. Still, if Abrams and Terrio decide to change course and have the moment amount to Kylo misleading Rey, it would be a very strange choice to make, especially when you consider Johnson's reasoning.

Were Rey revealed to have a familiar connection to characters fans already know, the director explains that "it would be the big 'I am your father' twist [from The Empire Strikes Back]."

"The easy thing would be, 'Yes, your parents are so and so and here's your place in the world. There you go,'" he says. "The hardest thing she could hear would be [...] 'No, you're not going to get the answer. This is not going to define you. You're going to have to find your own place in this world. Kylo is going to use that even as leverage to try and make you feel insecure, and you're going to have to stand on your own two feet.'"

As Johnson points out, there is an argument that can be made that Rey's parents being nobody important makes her a stronger character. For her, it's not about following or moving away from the path set out in front of her by a parent. In truth, her course is closer to that of Anakin Skywalker, who lived most of his early life as a slave before finding out he was strong with the Force.

Regardless, any answer is open to interpretation, especially to Abrams as he sets out writing Episode IX. Ridley has said that at this point, the next saga film will be her final appearance in the Star Wars movie franchise, meaning Rey's story will likely reach its conclusion in the the movie.

Now the question is whether her story will be massively changed in the process. Star Wars: Episode IX will be in theaters on December 20, 2019. Star Wars will next be on the big screen when Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Han Solo standalone film, arrives on May 25.

Episode VIII sucked. Not actually a poorly done movie or crappy...but, nevertheless, it sucked.

I don’t mind if it stays as they are nobodies. I think Disney have a problem, in that each film is written by someone else, didn’t the director of the last Jedi even say he didn’t think about The Force Awakens when writing TLJ, crazy.

I don't get why people are so upset over Rey being the daughter of two average people on Jakku. The Jedi were pretty much all taken as infants from their parents once the order discovered they were force sensitive, which means most of the Jedis that we saw in the prequels and before those movies were force-sensitive people born to average parents who might not have even been force-sensitive themselves.

Even Anakin, the special nature of his conception aside was the son of a woman who was a slave. There were never generations of Jedi who passed down their force sensitive from generation to generation. That is what made Anakin so venerable to the influence of the Dark Side and Palpatine. Because he had formed attachments with Padame and gotten her pregnant.

Rey being the daughter of nobodies puts her in line with the Jedi of the Old Order, who were the children of nobodies or normal people but were born with the ability to use the force.

Having her just be another Skywalker or some lost descendant of a Jedi kinda ruins that. In fact, her being a nobody makes her special if she can successfully rebuild the Jedi Order, because she will accomplish what Luke could not, and also bring the Order back that the Chosen One(Anakin) destroyed years ago.

This also raises another question, what is the chosen one was never Anakin or Luke. What if the Chosen One was Rey, and the Jedi, Sith, and everyone else misread the prophecy.

@caryslan2: Rey is such a Disney girl power Mary Sue already, it would be too obvious for her to be The Chosen One. It makes more sense that Anakin WAS the Chosen One, he just didn't complete the prophecy until he killed the Emperor in the end. If you know anything about Greek prophecies, they tend to be true but end tragically and not the way anyone thought (sort of like Last Jedi heh).

@caryslan2: Yeah the thing about Chosen Ones is that there can only be one. And if the supposed Chosen One died ages ago and fucked up, he most likely never was the Chosen One.

Rey is built to be the Chosen One now. But in Episode XXIII it will be someone else. Ergo the Chosen One is just folklore to inspire people, not actually any person

You know something is horribly written when they can't even decide where the main character comes from between one movie and the next.

This is what happens when a massive soul-crushing corporation stuffs your nostalgia into its cold machinery to churn out nothing more than a profit.

Star Wars is officially nothing more than a piñata that Disney beats to death time and again to make the money fall out. Star Wars is dead.

@morg444: Agreed!! Rian Johnson very clearly hates Luke Skywalker. No one could ever write Luke the way they did in TLJ, unless you absolutely despise the character.

Why do her parents have to be someone familiar? Why does everything in the cinematic universe have to be interlinked by a few threads?

The universe is so vast, yet the whiny bitches of the internet have to boil everything down to Skywalker.

@nomadski69: Are you like stupid are something? The entire Star Wars trilogy is about the Skywalker family. Yeah the universe is vast, but the story is not about the entire universe. After 8 episode you still don't see this is about one family? Dumbass.

@knyght1008: And Kylo Ren is your Skywalker character for the new trilogy. Why does Rey also have to be a Skywalker? Are you upset there is no confirmation Finn is a Skywalker? What about Snoke? Maybe he is a lost Skywalker who felt left out?

Also, BB-8 is cut from R2D2 spare parts that Luke once accidentally peed himself over. There's an exclusive for you.

@knyght1008: I think the dumbass is the one who doesn't know what a trilogy is now we're on the 8th film.....

Who says this is about one big family anyway? The fans? The same group whining about how the film didn't pan out how they expected it to? Good is all I can say about that.

This film had flaws, very few films don't, but the worst part about it is the self entitled fans whining incessantly about how they are right, and the people who are writing the actual story aren't.

@tenaka30: So the dumbass is you, because Star Wars is on it's 3rd trilogy idiot.

Who says it is about the Skywalker family? How about the fucking creator himself Mr Lucas. Also Kathleen Kennedy herself said in an interview with him that she wants to protect and preserve his protagonists. Yeah stupid dumbfuck know what you are arguing about before you post stupid shit that make you look like a fool.

The fans have every right to be upset. Deal with it. Even Mark Hamill himself said he hated how Luke was portrayed in the Last Jedi. Most of the gripes I've read are valid. On the other hand people defending the movie are the one spewing stupid shit like your post with no real arguments.

The film didn't just have flaws. It was down right poorly written with plot holes galore and every set up JJ did was thrown out the window. The entire episode 7 was about Luke leaving clues to find him and a special moment of Rey passing the lightsaber to him ended up being a poor comedic attempt at humor in episode 8 is a very good reason for fans to be upset about. You thinking otherwise just make you incapable of seeing reason.

And that was only one of many examples. It's not being self entitled to expect what was setup from the previous movie only to be mishandled the way it did.

@knyght1008: oooh ouchy, hit a raw nerve I feel.

Mr Lucas, George to his friends, was not involved in The Force Awakens, so him saying that his original trilogy was about the Skywalkers, and then possibly saying the prequel trilogy were the same, has no bearing on the latest trilogy.

As per your own statement that pretty much makes you out to be the fool now yes?

The fans have every right to get upset about it, just as you have every right to get upset by my post. You can certainly hold an opinion that my argument has no merit, you'd be wrong of course, but that would be my opinion (it'd still be wrong though :D ).

You do need to realise that everything you state as fact about episode 7 is your opinion and just that. Yes, I am aware that it is an opinion you share with many others. With a fanbase this large it is very unlikely you would hold a single opinion on it alone.

And, yes, it IS self-entitled to think that you dictate what a film should or should not contain based on the fact you paid for a ticket to see it.

Love, hugs and kisses, toodles.

@tenaka30: Ah no, you continue to show a complete lack of comprehension.

Just because Lucas is not involved with the new trilogy does not mean it is no longer about the Skywalkers. The prequel is not "possibly" about the same. It IS the same. 4-6 is about Lukes Journey, 1-3 is about Anakins journey, exact words from him and quite obvious without his confirmation. To assume an obvious fact as a "possibility" just don't make you look more dumb than that.

Another fact. Kathleen saying she wants to continue this legacy does in FACT give bearing to the new trilogy. Add to another FACT Kylo Ren is a Skywalker.

I am not upset by your post. Simply pointing out all of your stupid arguments. Seriously what makes you look even more dumb his how blind you are to it.

You have no idea what the difference between fact and opinion is. You can't even counter argue anything anyone has said and have only played devils advocate, and only made yourself look stupid in the process.

Love, hugs and kisses, add tickling and pinches your cheek. Toodles.

@knyght1008:

"Ah no, you continue to show a complete lack of comprehension." - You actually mean I continue to disagree with your opinion. This is fine, I understood what you meant and also agree.

"Just because Lucas is not involved with the new trilogy does not mean it no longer about the Skywalkers." - This is correct. However it also does not mean that it IS about the Skywalkers. You might want it to be; you might have expected it to be but I think if you took anything from the first two movies in this trilogy it is that it isn't about the Skywalker family. This is wishful thinking on your part. I understand why you would be disappointed about it but it wasn't your choice to make, and you either move with the times or accept the new direction the saga is heading.

Personally the reason I like the new films is BECAUSE they aren't falling back on this one family. With a galaxy so large everything cannot possibly be about them.

I know nothing of Kathleen's comments so cannot comment on them directly but given your representation of them aloneleaves a lot of wiggle room. Two of the main characters from the original trilogy have been killed off already on her watch, one more can sadly only go in the same direction due to real world events. She isn't as much of a rock for you to lean on as you might think. If she really said what you think she said then she actually lied to you.

You WERE upset. This is clearly apparent by the tone of your replies. Copy out your first reply to me and remove the personal attacks, the insults, and the colourful language. THAT would be a non-upset response.

You've clearly calmed down in your latest reply but still you attempt to insult and denigrate my position, all while actually ironically falling foul of your own accusations.

I CAN, and will where possible, counter arguments, but you didn't really post much I haven't responded to beyond the failed insults.

@knyght1008: You really do have a high opinion of yourself don't you?

Only your opinion is correct, factually so. Anyone who disagrees is automatically an idiot regardless of the merit of their argument. Your default "go-to" is to insult the other person. Your method of emphasising your argument is varied display of colourful language.

And when you have no argument you act as though you have the moral high-ground, as though you are gracefully exiting the discussion.

No. You weren't upset at all were you?
