Don't Delete Facebook Or You'll Lose All Oculus Games For Good

Don't permanently delete your Facebook account or you will lose all the games you purchased.

If you have an Oculus VR headset and were thinking about deleting your Facebook account in order to go off the social media grid, you may want to reconsider. If you completely delete the Facebook account linked to your Oculus device, you will also lose access to all VR games you purchased. You won't be able to get them back if you make a new account, either.

You're required to link a Facebook account when using the Oculus Quest 2 headset, and if your Facebook account isn't in good standing, you will not be able to use the Quest 2 at all. Because of this connection, you must keep that account to have access to the purchases you've made. You don't necessarily have to link a Facebook account yet on the older Oculus devices, including the first Quest, but as UploadVR pointed out, support for separate Oculus accounts ends in 2023 and then all users will need Facebook.

Now Playing: Everything Oculus Gaming From Facebook Connect

If you deactivate your Facebook account instead of permanently deleting it, you also won't be able to access any of your Oculus information. However, this can be reversed by reactivating it, while the deletion method does not have an "undo." If you make a new account, you'll have to purchase all that content again.

This seems to apply to Facebook accounts that are banned, as well--so your safest bet is to keep your Facebook, but not use it very much. It's an extremely troubling restriction.

Despite these restrictions, Facebook has made its Quest platform quite enticing recently. The latest iteration is less expensive, lighter, and includes a higher-resolution screen than its predecessor, along with a more-comfortable strap design. With no more versions of Oculus Rift being made, the company is all-in on the standalone headset, which can also play PC-powered VR games via the Oculus Link cable. That includes high-end VR games like Half-Life: Alyx, essentially meaning you'll only need one VR headset unless you're interested in playing PlayStation VR exclusives.

It's also partnering with other game companies to bring new blockbuster games to the platform, including Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond from Respawn Entertainment and new Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell games from Ubisoft. There has not otherwise been a Splinter Cell game of any sort since 2013.

This is another reason not to buy any oculus products. No facebook products for that matter either. Facebook is toxic and really not a place to save games or anything of value really. I refuse to have a facebook account. Dumb move by facebook. This prevents hundreds of thousands of people from getting oculus. But facebook is desperate to get back members who deleted their accounts in the last five years or so. Especially after the Cambridge Analytica scandal with the subsequent, Zuckerberg speaking in front of congress about facebook privacy. Good one facebook, send your creepiest guy to tell congress your company isn't creepy!

They can keep their device as I will not spend money on something that is tied to an program in order to use it, I find the requirement hideous and sinister as there may be an reason they want people to maintain their accounts so they can spy on folks through the device maybe?

With most accounts you can change your email and not lose purchases.

once linked your Facebook account supersedes your Quest account? This makes Facebook tracking your history very easy and this can include GPS tracking. IMO this can become a very powerful tool for Facebook and create more privacy issues for the consumer.

Changing your Facebook account you lose access to your games.

Deactivating your Facebook account you lose access to your purchases.

Deleting your Facebook you lose your purchases for good.

I would advise making a fresh new Facebook account for your Quest account and not use a preexisting account and never use the new Facebook on another device, if that is possible.

This starts with Quest but most likely any future device Facebook owns will have the same requirement. Terminator Genisys?

@systemoverload: The only problem with that is its against the TOS to have 2 profiles so you risk being banned. And good luck getting anywhere with them for customer service if you have a problem and use a fake profile for an account.

Wow. I was just reading that people who are using 2 headsets at once on the same Facebook account are being banned. Facebook REALLY wants to pad their user numbers. And they still haven't addressed how young kids are supposed to use the headset if parents don't want them to have a Facebook account. You have to be 13 to have an account so I guess parents are supposed to lie and make an account for their little kid just to use the headset. This is beyond stupid.

@deviltaz35: True, but that doesn't negate the fact that they are banning people for using two headsets on one account.

They will end up getting busted by ACCC in Australia if they try that anyway as once you buy a product here you are entitled to use it whenever you wish.

Imagine buying a new fridge, and filling it with all sorts of delicious food. And then one day, months or years later, the fridge maker comes along and says if you don't sign up to their online forums -- where you must use your real name, and give them all sorts of personal information -- they'll stop your fridge from cooling, thereby spoiling your food (food you paid for) and rendering the fridge useless. There'd be a class action lawsuit the same day as the announcement.

There's no reason for this mandate. If you own an Oculus, you already have an Oculus account that your purchases are tied to. Forcing users to merge with FB, use a social media platform they may have no interest in, and then taking away their purchases if they don't comply? That's a shakedown at best, and extortion at worse.

Nobody likes a bully. And FB's mafia strongarm tactics -- especially after expressly promising they wouldn't require FB for Oculus -- show just what kind of company they are.

@MigGui: the difference is that steam's sole purpose is your game library.

Facebook and VR are two separate things, with the VR forcing you to use a completely unrelated service.

Steam doesn't make you sign up for other unrelated services in order to use it. There's no reason why you would want to delete your steam account. There are many reasons why you would want to delete a facebook account though.

@MigGui: You can delete your account but your games are still there whereas with Facebook it is not and the difference between Steam this involves using an device outside of Facebook which one once thought it worked independent outside of the program but now it needs the program, so there is an difference.

@MigGui: They have to legally retain a backup though at least for Australian accounts as it is part of the law of them being allowed to operate the service here online :).

Aussies have much stricter consumer protection which can come in very handy when businesses pretend there is nothing they can do.

Steam has had to pay the Aust Govt before over the whole GST fiasco

What a cool way to get back at an Ex though , just delete their steam account lol . Not that i suggest this of course.

@MigGui: The difference is that Facebook profits off selling your information while Steam profits off selling games. A Steam account is fundamentally different from a Facebook account in that way.

Facebook tracks every action you take on your device so long as you're logged in and then sells that information to the highest bidder so they can better take advantage of you. Steam just wants you to buy games.

@MigGui: I agree with that. I was just pointing out the difference between a Steam account and a Facebook one.

It should be worth pointing out, however, that when Facebook bought Occulus people were promised that you'd never need a Facebook account to use the device. While nobody should be surprised this turned out to be a lie, Facebook is also rightly getting hit with a bit of backlash over the whole thing.

For me personally, I don't really have any interest in VR, so I'm just watching all the drama from the sidelines for a bit of amusement.

@dancingcactus: So.. create an account with an email that you don't use. No one is forcing you to upload pictures of yourself and connect to 500 people. It is no different from using an email to sign up for steam, or epic. Use your junk email, buy games, play oculus.

One more reason for people not to buy the device. I don't care about Facebook but I have no choice but to have a page for my business. That's just how it is these days. But making me have a Facebook account so I can use a VR headset is just plain stupid. Its not like they make money off of someone with a Facebook account they never look at except to use a headset so I don't see the reason for this. Do they think people who don't like Facebook will start checking out what relatives are having for dinner or what stupid thing their dog is doing so Facebook can make a few nickles off of an ad the person ignored?

@bdrtfm: In short, yes. It also pads their numbers because they can turn around and say they have "x" many "active" accounts, even though said people are only using VR. Then tack on the data mining of it. While you are "only using VR" FB knows what games you look at, what entertainment you look at, will start building a "like" list of content, how you stand, how you look around, etc....

@deviltaz35: Real VR is still tethered to PC, with real native passthrough. Exception is the Vive Wireless Adapter (and even then you still have to deal with the pita and limitations of outside-in tracking).

@Pyrosa: Then why is the WMR subreddit active, RIGHT NOW, with Windows developers on a daily basis? Why do "WMR for SteamVR" updates keep coming out nearly 2x a month? Why was 2004 a huge update to the WMR subsystem?

Why is MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR getting WMR support FIRST?

Please educate yourself kid. Thank you.
