Divinity: Original Sin - PC Game of the Year

Divinity: Original Sin

If you haven't played Divinity: Original Sin but have only seen screenshots, it would be easy to dismiss its success as owing to its grab at PC-enthusiast nostalgia. That isometric perspective? A party of four? They recall the good-old days of Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate II. Could a game really be blamed for appealing to our fondness for the past?

In the case of Divinity, however, appearances are deceiving. What makes Divinity special isn't how closely it hews to an old recipe, but how far it deviates from it. This is a game in which the most innocuous of choices have consequences that you may not have foreseen, but which nonetheless make sense within this internally consistent and varied world. Making decisions in Divinity isn't a matter of following dialogue paths to predesignated story beats, but about deciding whether a conversation is even worth having in the first place. And should that conversation occur, it's up to your own personal gifts of persuasion--and a little bit of luck--to determine whether it will go your way. Violence is an option, but it's not the only one.

Now Playing: See our Winner for PC Game of the Year

Violence is nevertheless an enjoyable option, however, thanks to Divinity's excellent turn-based combat, which harbors surprises of its own, most of them due to elemental reactions that could blow up your entire party if you aren't paying close attention to your surroundings. In Divinity: Original Sin, every encounter, every discussion, every step into the unknown is an event. And you know a game is special when you know that the simplest of choices might create lasting, heart-pounding, game-changing drama.

Well... I didn't play very many new games in 2014. But this is one I actually did play... for about 30 hours. And then I said to myself, "You know... I'm sitting here playing this game, and I'm not exactly sure why. It's not very fun, and I'm not actually enjoying it." And so that was the end of that.

Point in fact, the game was incredibly boring. Mostly due to the fact that the 2 lead roles idea is stupid, pointless, and confusing; there are ZERO interesting support characters; the combat is incredibly slow (difficulty is subjective); character building is boring and linear; and even after 30 hours of gameplay, I still didn't even know what the story was about.

This is a niche game that serves only within its niche. And it only serves the diehard fans of that niche, apparently, because I actually like turn-based RPG's. That's fine that those people enjoy it so much. I'm not knocking it. But I would think a game worthy of GOTY would actually have to be a game that anyone might actually enjoy.

That being said, if this is the best PC exclusive title of the year - I'd hate to see the other legitimate candidates.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> "The best... modern... ever made." That's kind of like saying, "This is the best sentence I've ever written in the last 10 seconds!"

I actually love the genre. I also actually love making relevant arguments.

I just purchased this during Steams Winter Sale and I put an hour or two into it. I can tell this game is going to be a fun ride.

Played this for 30 hours got bored, gone back to dragon age :) in my professional opinion Dragon Age:Inquisition takes the cake as overall GOTY for 2014! I've spent 170 hours on dragon age:i that's 160 hours in single player and 10 hours in multiplayer.

So happy to see GS didn't go along with rating game of the year like some Popularity contest. They went with the most unique surprise game of the year. A game that started small and grew huge by the time it was done and went from expected budget game to surpriseing Triple A quality. Everything else was pretty generic fare this year. This is a REAL PC GAME.

I found it really boring and old fashioned. Gave up after about 8 hours...just didn't draw me in and the combat is just terribly stale.

Truly horrible pick. The worst GOTY in the twenty years I've been reading Gamespot. This game is easily one of the most tedious and frustrating games I've ever played. The imbalance is ridiculous. You're finding yourself up against numbers sometimes twice as big as your party and with skills like resurrection for a level 4 enemy. Seriously, the game balance is totally whacked. The truly sad part is that this game comes no where near being as good as Divine Divinity which was a near masterpiece and that game came out over five years ago.

<< LINK REMOVED >> OMG, you've like never played an RPG in your life have you? Nothing like Final Fantasy 7 surely, or Balder's Gate 2 surely. The combat is quite easy if you just use your brain and level up some first before you face things much higher lv than you. I often found the game too easy, and I easily outleveled most creatures I went up against. Tactical RPGs just aren't your type of game if you found this too hard. Maybe diablo is more up your alley although if you played Diablo 2, I'm sure that was too hard for you too.

I must say that Gamespot got it right this year. I'm playing Dragon Age: Inquisition now and as much as i'm enjoying it, Divinity: Original Sin blew me away with it's originality, nice visuals, great strategic combat and memorable moments. I played through it 3 times with my best friend. (If you played it solo and not with a friend...you don't know what you're missing)

The only thing that pisses me off about D:OS is the fact that it appears that they don't have a sequel in the making as of yet. Larian, it made GOTY, was on the top of the Steam list for months and made a LOT of money! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR! MAKE ANOTHER ONE ALREADY! hehehe. :-)

I just couldn't get into this game. Very tedious interface, bad movement, and I found myself in conversations arguing with myself... not sure what they were thinking, I can imagine it'd be fun with two people, but as a single player it felt really strange. Also the difficulty was badly tuned, 1-shot galore when you're trying to learn the game is no fun.

Larian beats Bioware's latest & greatest with an isometric RPG? Gamespot may now craft a +5 Sword of Irony.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Dragon Age Inquisition IS NOT PC GOTY. Look at the complaints from PC gamers. The game basically is a CONSOLE button mashing game. The skill-trees are dumbed down. It's even worst than Dragon Age 2. Those NPCs are puppets. They have no schedule. They don't even interact with you. The only thing is game is huge now for the exploration and it's beautiful.
