Dexter Prequel Series Reportedly Confirmed, Trinity Killer Spinoff Possible

According to a new report, Showtime has big plans for more streaming shows, and they include spinoffs of popular series like Dexter and Billions, and a brand-new one likened to Homeland.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Showtime has ordered a new Dexter TV series that will tell an origin story for Dexter, the killer-with-a-conscience played by Michael C. Hall.

The original show ran from 2006-2013 before coming back in 2021 for a one-season revival called Dexter: New Blood. This new series will be an origin story for Dexter, and presumably someone else will come in to play the character.

Additionally, WSJ reported that Showtime is "exploring" the possibility of additional spinoffs that reveal the backstories of other characters, including the Trinity Killer. One of Dexter's most menacing adversaries, he was played by John Lithgow in the original series.

A report from TV Line recently said Showtime stopped developing a second season of Dexter: New Blood and would instead move forward with a new series about a young Dexter.

WSJ's report said Showtime executives are working with Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips on the new Dexter origin story series, which will be set in Miami. The report also mentioned that the show will "touch on stories of real-life serial killers of the time period."

Beyond the Dexter series, WSJ reported that Showtime has four more series in the works from the Billions franchise, the first of which will be a spinoff set in Miami. Other shows are being developed with the working titles "Millions" and "Trillions."

What's more, Showtime has given the green light to a new thriller series based on the French TV series The Bureau, the report said. This show, which the report said will be directed by George Clooney, is set within the CIA and is similar in tone to Showtime's Homeland series that was one of its biggest hits.

Going forward, Showtime and Parmount+ will be merged into one streaming service called Paramount+ with Showtime.
