Destiny Has 3.2 Million Daily Players a Month After Launch

"Pioneering something new is never easy. When we see the raw numbers, it’s easy for us to say that the destination was worth the journey."

It has been a full month since Bungie and Activision launched Destiny, and while it has received its fair share of criticism during that time, the data proves that people are still playing it. A lot.

In a post to Bungie's official website, Community Manager David "DeeJ" Dague revealed that Destiny averages 3.2 million players every day. As Bungie revealed last month, these players' play sessions are still three hours long on average, even on weekdays. The average Destiny player also logs into the the game 1.8 times a day, and has played Destiny 20.9 times in total.

To put things into perspective, Bungie says over the past three weeks it has had more players online in Destiny that it did during the same span for Halo 3 and Halo: Reach combined. However, keep in mind that Halo 3 and Halo: Reach had single player campaigns that could be played offline. In Destiny, you have to be online, even if you're playing through the story alone.

"Your reactions and your opinions have helped us to make Destiny better over this past month," Dague said. "Pioneering something new is never easy. When we see the raw numbers, it’s easy for us to say that the destination was worth the journey."

For more on Destiny, be sure to check out GameSpot's review.

surely if people don't like this game anymore there would now be article's about it having dead servers for being a new(ish) game. its clear that this game is still liked by the masses as this article is proof of it. don't get me wrong the games not amazing but the evidence contradicts the consensus that people say.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I tend to agree, that being said, I always give games like this the 3 months window. After 3 months, if the servers are still not empty, then this game is a success.

<< LINK REMOVED >> 3.2 million is a great figure but it doesnt say how much originally played it. It might have decreased by a huge amount for all we know. Also that is across multiple platforms and two different generations of consoles. So is it really that huge of a number? Also as mentioned you have to be online to play the game you cant play an offline campaign mode.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah I think thats fair and the game clearly has a devoted fanbase. Im just someone who was genuinely disappointed by the game. It just seems to be incomplete and thin in terms of content. I just dont want Bungie and especially Activision to think this is ok. I want the sequel to improve and learn from this game because it has so much potential.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Sorry but you're wrong. Being addicted to something and liking something genuinely are two different things. Not to mention the marketing that this game got was ridiculous....so much hype for the game. Plus people who WANT to like the game but just can't are still playing it.

The general consensus is that the game isn't good, that the game deserves around 5.5/10...... that is what the majority of the people are saying. They aren't calling it abysmal and giving it a 1/10.... so with the combination of the hype that the game got, all the coverage the game got after release, it's no surprise that 3.2 million still play/day.

It is all about the marketing. That is why you have players playing a crappy game like Destiny more than playing an actual good game that not a lot of people have heard of.

You'll learn more about it as you get older and learn about marketing and things like that.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> i know a lot about marketing my friend i wouldn't presume that i dont, also i'm not "young" (getting that out of the way) you can say that but theres not really any other way to know how good your game is unless you look at the only evidence (which is) how long you play and how many times people log on to play. its a bit much to presume all 3.2 million people are just addicted, most addictive games are generally fun anyway its usually why they're addictive in the first place(or money of course).

in all honesty you can market something to death but people played this game on both alpha and beta a lot its highly unlikely people didn't either check the gameplay videos or played the game and bought it solely on billboards and tv adverts etc. too many people turn to that as a problem but its not like we were lied to, if the game sucked so much the word of mouth from the beta/alpha alone would have stopped that train too.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I wouldn't say liked by the masses. There are games that have been out a lot longer that have a much larger player base. I still play the game an hour here and there but, once I finished the campaign and did a few days of MP, the game lost much of it's charm. The question still remains, how many games were sold and how many people were playing at launch vs. now? It could be steadily dropping. It could be slowly increasing. Nobody really knows. And I'm sure if it was decreasing steadily, Bunige wouldn't say.

<< LINK REMOVED >> theres probably a few people who bought the ps4 white destiny bundle and got rid of the game its a good way to get a bit of the money back. the thing about destiny isn't that people dont like the actual game, they dont like the amount of content for the price (which i agree with), it seems you need to be a person who plays mmo's a lot to be happy with it. its why there's also a backlash (usually from fps players) as it dosnt fit the need they get from there games.

the game has great gameplay. It just lacks content cutscenes and a few other things that could have made it supreme masterpiece like space combat for example

@Seifer24 Space combat would be rad... I want to be able to have epic ground battles, then get in my space ship and have some epic space combat... everything without loading screens, a smooth transition between ground and space combat.

I'm having a b.oner just thinking about it...

The space ships should be more than just a generic loading screen is what I'm saying...

@Sarg1010 that was never bungie's intention activision stepped in and made them hack it to pieces and destroy the story which is why the lead writer quit back in jan and why the story is so bland because the left over people had to make up what he was doing with it. I believe all the content is already on the disk its just locked. The bug that was found shows a bunch of levels that are for low levels. Bungie saying they're just placement tokens is bs they already had the xp for them and mission description and the 28 raid had random modifiers set to it. If they were just place tokens that info would be blank. each race was suppose to have its own origin story and they cut it all out

I'm actually looking forward to Advanced Warfare. I haven't played any of the previous CoD games except MW2, but the gameplay looks pretty solid. They can really do some interesting things to mix up MP as well with those exosuits.
