Destiny Has 3.2 Million Daily Players a Month After Launch

"Pioneering something new is never easy. When we see the raw numbers, it’s easy for us to say that the destination was worth the journey."

It has been a full month since Bungie and Activision launched Destiny, and while it has received its fair share of criticism during that time, the data proves that people are still playing it. A lot.

In a post to Bungie's official website, Community Manager David "DeeJ" Dague revealed that Destiny averages 3.2 million players every day. As Bungie revealed last month, these players' play sessions are still three hours long on average, even on weekdays. The average Destiny player also logs into the the game 1.8 times a day, and has played Destiny 20.9 times in total.

To put things into perspective, Bungie says over the past three weeks it has had more players online in Destiny that it did during the same span for Halo 3 and Halo: Reach combined. However, keep in mind that Halo 3 and Halo: Reach had single player campaigns that could be played offline. In Destiny, you have to be online, even if you're playing through the story alone.

"Your reactions and your opinions have helped us to make Destiny better over this past month," Dague said. "Pioneering something new is never easy. When we see the raw numbers, it’s easy for us to say that the destination was worth the journey."

For more on Destiny, be sure to check out GameSpot's review.

Yeah, this game must suck because it got a 6 here right? I haven't played it, but it's still high 70s on metacritic. Alien Isolation, Driveclub, and this all had piss poor reviews here.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Reviews are just opinions and opinions are like belly buttons - everybody has one. A score of 75 is not exactly stellar considering the cost of this game. And, reviews can be bought, which they often are. The score from actual people who paid for the game and played it for more than a few days is much lower. 6.4 for PS4 5.7 for Xbox One. That's pretty bad for $500 000 000.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I never said it was stellar. 75 is still decent enough to be considered a good game, and definitely better than the 60 (or 6.0) it got here. To bring up bought reviews is pretty pathetic honestly. So, they bought out 55 professionals, but VanOrd wouldn't budge? Please. Also, user scores are a joke because of tr0lls and fanboys.

@bdrtfm @Dissentioncc It's still enough to warrant a difference of fair to good on this very site. And that 0.5 would bump it enough to almost be considered great.

@rcj22001 @Dissentioncc And what exactly have you added to the discussion? I made a comment, and other people have been replying/asking questions. I, in turn, have been answering them. You know, that thing called conversation? You don't like what you are seeing? Too bad, so sad. I think you are the one who needs to get over seeing someone's opinion that you don't agree with.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That is because most of the user reviews on the internet are made by people about three minutes after they have put the disk in the console for the first time.

Just have a read of most of them on Amazon. They are all pretty much "Just got the game enjoying it so far. Five stars", when really they should have waited at least two weeks or so before making the review.

@Dannystaples14 @Dissentioncc User reviews? Where did I say anything about user reviews? The user score is actually low because of people like the morons commenting here. Bandwagon hate and console fanboyism tilt user scores to being completely useless.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well yeah that is why Metacritic is the worst place to go looking for useful information about a game.

People bias it based on hate and people bias it based on blind love for a game because they are fanboys.

The point is if you want to play a game try it for yourself. I would have got Destiny whether the review was a six or not just because it was Bungie and I really liked the beta.

That didn't stop me from thinking the game was boring as f*ck.

A good game, but not perfect. And of course I base my decision to buy on whether or not I'd be interested. Nintendo games get good to great scores all the time, but I pass on every single one because I can't stand their games.

@neowarrior793 That's going to be a possibility soon. A GS mod for Google Glasses is in the works that lets a person see through Kevin's eyes.

Compatibility with VR sets is also a high possibility.

If you look at most games, the majority of the reviews fall under a similar score. There has never been a game where the scores were all over the map. Destiny, for example, has the majority of scores being around the 7.5-8.0 range.

@Dissentioncc @justbefahad How is someone's opinion not accurate? He scored the game based on how much he enjoyed it - not based on how the average reviewer enjoyed it. Some scored the game higher than him, some lower. Welcome to the Human Race.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, I'd have to go into how I think reviews need to be as objective as possible because this isn't Big Ol' VanO's bloggy blog. It's a professional game site. But, that would result in pointless back and forth where you tell me that it's impossible, etc. etc.

@Dissentioncc @bdrtfm If it wasn't for the PlayStation mag giving it a ridiculous 100 and some others a 9.5 or higher, the average would have been much lower. No way this game is a 9.5-100.

I'm not even gonna ask how they bloated and spun these numbers. They aren't terribly impressive to begin with, but I can only guess that they struggled to even validate these with some vague classifying.

One thing is for sure. Bungie is the king of the highest damage control rate required to any new IP in video game history. Every Destiny article I've seen over the last month has been Bungie 'explaining' this, or 'defending' that. lol Congrats Bungie/Activision. Got a real gem on your hands there.

<< LINK REMOVED >> While it's certainly possible they spun the numbers, It's very likely it's based on unique daily log-in's. Which would make if hard to spin, as even if one person logs on 50 times in a day, it still only counts as 1 log in.

Also as far as MMO's go, 3.2 million is VERY good. It's not World of Warcraft numbers for sure. To put it in perspective: Since it's relaunch Final Fantasy XIV Online has somewhere around 2 million active accounts (that's not daily log-in's, that would be even lower). It took them over a year to hit that number.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yep, fair enough indeed. I was considering it's proposed daily users in contrast to it's bloated hype and marketing mainly. In contrast to the "revolutionary" game Activision/Bungie profess Destiny to be, I think 3.2 is a kind of..... humble userbase. By any other standards, 3.2 million would be fairly nice for sure though. Also, I'm sure that 3.2 million number is going to be significantly smaller come next month. Destiny isn't exactly jumping off the shelves these days. When I see the PS4 bundle reduced by $50, it's doesn't paint the most flattering picture for the game's true adoption rate.

In terms of a single person logging in 50 times a day , and counting as only 1 login.... well..... that makes sense on a common everyday understanding. However, they don't make any reference to what a player login consists of. They don't says it's 3.2 million "unique" player logins per day, just 3.2 million players in it's day. It's all in the wording really, which is what I was getting at them spinning numbers. It's marketing. In the end, their monthly report is a marketing stint. "Look at how great our game is doing! See? It's not so bad afterall!" type of thing. :)

Ironic you would mention FF XIV also, as SE are probably one of the most shameless spin artists out there.

This seems like a lot, but it's probably because the shooter crowd was desperate for something new to play. When the new Borderlands, Call of Duty, Far Cry, and Halo: MCC hit, I'm sure a lot of people will move on from this game.

Man, you gotta clap at how Activision is the king of all when it comes to making people play their games and making a h*ll lot of money out of em. Despite all the criticism and hate, Destiny is still going strong as it continues to appeal the masses somehow. EA and Ubi must be impressed by Activision more than ever before now.
