Destiny 2 Studio's Next Game May Be More 'Whimsical'

We get some hints at what Bungie is working on alongside Destiny.

Very little is known about Destiny 2 developer Bungie's next IP but a series of job listings have revealed some minor details about the title. Originally spotted by The Game Post, one of the job listings is for an Incubation Investment Designer.

"You are the glue between the sword and the reward. You will work in tandem with our sandbox and economy teams to build and distribute items to our players. Living inside a giant database of hundreds of baubles, weapons, and armor is nothing new to you. And neither is building a system to cleverly distribute those items in a necromancer's dungeon."

The key information seems to come at the end, but it's unclear whether the game will in fact include necromancers or their dungeons, or if this is talking more in the abstract. The listing also mentions having experience with an "RPG game system at any scale."

A second job listing for an "Incubation Senior / Lead Combat Designer" mentions AI combat systems and player character perks, pointing to the game at least having PvE elements, if it's not entirely PvE. Bungie filed a trademark for "Matter" back in 2018, which has been speculated to be its new IP.

A third job listing, originally spotted in February, for an "Incubation Art Director" mentions working on something "comedic with lighthearted and whimsical characters," which implies the game would have a lighter tone than Destiny.

What we do know is that Bungie wants to have a new IP released by 2025 and received a $100 million investment from NetEase in 2018 to help develop new, non-Destiny games. Bungie has also confirmed that it will be bringing Destiny 2 to next-gen consoles.

The first official look at Destiny 2's new DLC comes tomorrow June 9 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET with Season 11 kicking off an hour afterwards.
