Destiny 2: "I Hope People Complain About How Much Story We Have"

"We're learning from and listening to all the feedback we got on Destiny 1, and we're applying it."

One of the most heavily criticised elements of Destiny was its story, and that's nothing new for Bungie games, as people didn't always love Halo's story, either. Now, senior narrative lead Jason Harris and cinematic lead Matthew Ward have talked about how the story for Destiny 2 will be more of a focus compared to the original.

"Destiny 1 in a way was foundational," Ward told IGN. "It was meant to set up the world and ask a lot of questions, but not necessarily deliver too many answers. But leave enough out there for us to build upon."

Now Playing: Destiny 2 – Official Open Beta Launch Trailer

Destiny 1's DLC, including House of Wolves, Rise of Iron, and Taken King did not focus much on the mysterious Traveler, but Destiny 2 will, Ward said. While he didn't give away any specific details, he and Harris promised Destiny 2 will have a lot of story baked into it, so much that fans might take issue with how much story there is.

"We're learning from and listening to all the feedback we got on Destiny 1, and we're applying it," Ward said. "I hope people complain about how much story we have. That'd be the Reddit thread I'd like to read. 'Too much damn story [makes angry typing gesture].'"

No Caption Provided

Harris said in the interview that Bungie "spent a lot of time" world-building for the Destiny franchise overall. He added, "I can't emphasize enough that we are now ready to tell stories in this world. Big, expansive, cinematic stories."

"I think players are ultimately going to see a wide variety of story channels, an eclectic number of outlets to see story infused throughout the game; top to bottom, soup to nuts. There is story everywhere," he said.

Destiny 2's beta starts on July 18 for PS4 and July 19 for Xbox One, first for people who pre-order the game. It then opens up to everyone on July 21, wrapping up on July 23. The beta will be available on PC later.

The beta lets you try the opening story mission, called Homecoming, as well as the Inverted Spire Strike mission. In Crucible, you can try two modes, Control and Countdown. Additionally, the new social space, The Farm, will be playable for a period of time.

Some services won't be online yet, however. The beta won't support Destiny 2's Clan features, character progression won't be representative of the final game, and characters will be wiped before the game is released. If you participate in the beta, you will get a special emblem.

The full version of Destiny 2 launches in September for PS4 and Xbox One, with a release on PC to come in October.

Recently, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said Destiny 1 didn't release content fast enough to meet players' expectations. To address this, Activision is bringing in more studios to work alongside Bungie on Destiny 2.

They make it sound like the first game was light on story by design, but we know they had intended to make more of it and then cut that aspect back when they started running out of time.

The thing about Destiny was the lack of it, not about how good or how bad it was. The story and the lack of places to go turned me off of Destiny when it was an otherwise solid game. I wonder how much I'd like it now though with all that DLC out, and with the changes that came. I honestly just played through the 'story' at launch and quit. The thing I was hoping for with Destiny was the ability to go to many, if not all the planets in the solar system, and explore interesting locations, filled with interesting things to do and see.

It would have also been nice if, along the way, there was a well-developed story that was akin to their Halo; none of that was in the game. Also, it not being a couch co-op lessened the replay value even more. The game being so focused on the raids and the multiplayer side of it, where you need a bunch of people to do a specific thing isn't what I wanted to experience. The sound design, the visuals, the loot and tried and true shooter gameplay was all good but wasn't enough to hold me.

100% AGREED. That's what I was expecting based on all the early previews etc and the way they teased us.

However, Crucible is what held my attention because it's fun as hell to me and I'm very good at it (Halo with powers).

People didn't complain because they didn't like Destiny's story. They complained because there WAS NO STORY to begin with. You can't love or hate something that isn't even there. I think it's basically summed up by the Stranger - "I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain". Like wut? WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN. It was basically like, here. Do what we tell you, don't question how or why or what, just do it. Oh wait, you don't like that? Oh dear.

Complaining about "too much story" is pretty much the same as complaining that "the story sucks".

There are some people who do nothing but talk, and I can spend hours listening to them. But do you know who I complain about talking too much? The people who just keep on spewing words out of their mouths and don't ever say anything worth listening to.

"Too much story" is not a badge of pride. That means that your story sucks.

Looking forward to this game. I can't help feeling that Bungie/Activision are ripping us Xbox gamers off though. I mean receiving dlc for D1 after D2 launches is like a slap in the face. Really thinking about skipping it.

Not taking full advantage of the XBOX is another reason I feel like skipping. I've heard rumours that it's not even going to be 4K on XBOX let alone 4K 60. If it's not at least 4K 30 on XBOX then they can ram it where the sun doesn't shine.?✌️

@gamerbum: Don't "think about" skipping it -- just skip it. Vote with your dollars. Even if you liked the first one, there's no actual reason that you need to play during the first month.

Sigh just for Destiny 2, i had to hold my wallet during the steam sale. I will play on xbox :(.

Xbl - $45
D2 - $53
DLC1 - $20 (or season pass for $35)
DLC2 - $20
DLC3 - $20
EXP1- $40
Total - $198 (-xbl = $153)

And who knows what else what we will be forced to pay for to play bungie's half ass of a full game.

@Pyrosa: Unfortunately like many, i loved....but hated this game. And to clarify what i said, you can't level up, play raid and access some PvP modes (the best one....trials) UNLESS you forcefully pay the ridiculous premiums bungie indirectly charges you for what are essentially small updates that will either make you love or hate the game even more because they are incapable of balancing the damn game.

@Atzenkiller: tbh, i have a fairly large library of games and quite the backlog across PC and 3ds so if anything, holding back during that steam sale was good for me LOL.

Annnnnnd also spent more than i wanted to on other things already soooo T.T

@ishsgames: Then maybe it's time to seriously ask yourself why you keep spending so much money on buying more games, many of which you'll never get to play as you just keep piling more on top of that mountain. You might wanna get some help with your spending addiction before you end up in debt, if that's not already the case.

@Atzenkiller: lol nah i just had a relative over from UK and wanted him to have a super amazing time here in the states. Costs a lot of money though T.T. And i haven't bought any game except for like bayonetta for the past 8 months. Sold some 3ds games and also finished around 4 to 5 games in my backlog but thank you for your concern.

In the end, I think we can all agree getting the full experience out of destiny is absurdly expensive.

@ishsgames: Maybe I could, if I knew what "a full experience" has to do with Destiny. The dlcs were the most lackluster and overpriced thing ever with 99% rehashed content and recolored bosses from the main game. All that game ever had going for it was the mmo like grind for gear.

b) give a rats arse about Destiny two.

Story means nothing if it's the same repetitive gameplay and combat throughout which I'm betting this will be. "Hey guys check out how great and expansive our story is" as you fight the exact same group of enemies over and over in sort of open but linear world areas . Destiny 1 was so boring it actually made me angry kind of like how ubisoft montreal games effect me. Anthem shits all over destiny

The foundation in Destiny 1 was pretty bare bones (granted I didn't read grimore cards). It gave only the most superficial setting information and didn't answer a whole heap of questions.

I guess Halo lore was established over a number of games and books. Hopefully they do shed more light on the universe in Destiny 2.

Translation: We thought we had a 10 year moneymaker on our hands and could hand out the story in tiny little kernels like a hamster gets for running through a maze to you lemmings out there. We were already thinking about selling the next game rather than making sure the first one was satisfying.

@hyruler461: But it did imply that there'd be a lot coming for that franchise, not that they'd release a bare bones games with a few crappy massively overpriced dlcs that all added absolutely nothing to the already non existent story. When I heard about their 10 year plan I had a big vision for that game. But what it ultimately turned out to be couldn't be any further from that.
