Death Stranding PSA: Your Save Files Should Be Monitored

"We are all weighed down by our memories."

Death Stranding requires just over 49 GB of free space on your PS4 with the latest updates installed, but you might want to make sure you leave some extra room for your save files, too. With a save system that intentionally catalogs dozens of auto-saves, it certainly caught us off guard when the save folder climbed to hundreds of megabytes--close to 900 MB, for some of us at GameSpot. In addition to eating up potentially precious storage space, this can also make transferring your lot of saves to the cloud an unusually lengthy process.

When compared to other PS4 save-file folders, it was unusual to find examples that breached the 100 MB mark, though there are certainly games that do. No game, however, based on sorting through numerous GameSpot staff PS4 profiles, came close to Death Stranding's lofty sum.

Now Playing: 9 Essential Starter Tips For Death Stranding

When asked about the state of the save system, Sony confirmed that it is behaving as planned, so don't expect this to change anytime soon. Thankfully, if your hard drive is in need of a little breathing room, you always have the option of going in to manually delete any auto-saves you wish. In doing so, its possible to cut the folder down to roughly 15 MB. Just keep in mind that number will steadily creep up as you play--playing through the opening mission brought the save folder up to 54 MB, for example. If you must, make a habit of deleting excess files often to keep this folder in check.

Maybe they should add an option to limit the number of autosaves it keeps, or how frequently they're saved. It would be pretty simple to do that in a patch.

So why exactly does the game store dozens of auto saves without ever deleting them? I assume that every save already contains all the data in it, so no need for redundancy. And hardly anyone will want to waste hours of played time by reloading really old saves. So why does the game keep so many autosaves around intentionally?

@Atzenkiller: I mean there are plenty of other games that do this same thing. All the Elder Scrolls save their auto saves and don't write over them at least none of the pc versions do really. So its not unheard of that this is a thing really.

@DarkCaptain3: That's why I always disable autosaves in Bethesda games. Having a game never overwrite any autosaves is just crazy. And Bethesda games like to autosave on pretty much everything you do.

But I've just checked after playing the game pretty much all day and the total number of saves seems to be capped at 60. No idea why Kojima chose that instead of a reasonable number like 5 autosaves. But that's the total amount of savegames I had and the game has already deleted or overwritten some from the first hour or so of the game.

@DarkCaptain3: You can only get screwed by the autosave system if you're relying on it. Learn to save manually. It's what any smart person does. Relying on autosaves is just bad. Nothing more I really need to say about it.

The whole autosaves were mainly created for the modern casual gamer, who likes to shut off his brain while playing. Try to at least think of saving the game manuallly every once in a while. "Immersion" becomes nothing but a hindrance if it keeps you from thinking of things like that.

@Atzenkiller: Well the situation that occurred was due to something in a ayleid ruin and at the time it didnt call for a save cus I have set time frames I do them in however the auto save wound up deciding to autosave me right at a trap..... so it would keep reverting me back to that spot. Unfortunately for some reason the auto saves were also deleting my other saves I guess its cus i told the game it could only have so much space or something and the saves had been from months prior.... not sure.

I heard the game sucks and is a huge letdown, because all it has are fetch quests.

But anyways, is there not an option in the settings to limit or disable auto-saves? Seems like a glaring oversight if not.

@neurogia: You have heard it sucks? Well you couldnt be more wrong. Look at the scores of metacritic which clearly give it a positive score. 83 out of 100 is good.

Oh, well. That's nothing compared to having all 108GBs of Red Dead II on your HDD.
