Dead Or Alive 6 Review Roundup

Dead on arrival or staying alive?

Dead or Alive 6's release date has finally arrived, and the fighting game is available now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. All the talk in the lead up to launch was about how developer Team Ninja was toning down the series' traditional oversexualized look to help ease newcomers in to the franchise. But has Team Ninja followed up on that claim and, crucially, is the game any good?

GameSpot's Dead or Alive 6 review-in-progress says it's a mixed bag but ultimately a good choice for those looking to get into fighting games. To help you get a wider view of critical opinion, we've roundup up a bunch of reviews for you below. You can also check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic for the full picture on Dead or Alive 6's critical reception.

GameSpot -- 7/10 (Review-In-Progress)

"DoA6 is a fun, engaging fighter with great-feeling, easy-to-pick-up combat, a strong sense of visual style, and a lot of personality. If you're looking for a new fighting game to learn the ins and outs of--or perhaps a nice entry into the 3D side of fighting games--DoA6 is a fighter of choice." -- Heidi Kemps [Full review]

Eurogamer -- No Score

"Accessibility and tutorials cannot compensate for what is, ultimately, a fighting game that feels out of the loop and out of time. Dead or Alive 6 won't make a dent on the competitive fighting game community, and I can't see it expanding its modest fanbase, either. I can't help but struggle to understand those who get horny from this game when the internet in all its glory is a mobile phone tap away. I mean, there's sexier stuff made out of Source Filmmaker - probably involving the Dead or Alive girls - than is in this game. Dead or Alive 6 stumbles into 2019 like a drunken uncle staggers onto the dancefloor at a wedding: past it and likely to embarrass." -- Wesley Yin-Poole [Full review]

IGN -- 8.0/10 (Review-In-Progress)

"Dead or Alive 6 makes a strong case for the franchise's fundamental combat by making it easier to understand what sets it apart from other fighters, other than its infamous 'jiggle physics.' The story campaign is disjointed but it and the other training modes serve as effective instruction for getting new players up to speed for online combat quickly, and the new Break Hold and Break Blow moves give you a way out even when you seem locked into an endless juggle of doom." -- Mike Epstein [Full review]

Trusted Reviews -- 3.5/5

"Dead or Alive 6 is an enjoyable fighter, with a lot going for it. Koei Tecmo has looked back on the series' somewhat juvenile history and decided it’s time to grow up. Well, sort of. Sexualised fan-service is still here if you're willing to dig for it, and some of the character designs might rub you the wrong way, but it's far from a deal-breaker and no longer defines what DOA is all about. A robust combat system, plentiful characters and a meaningful progression system combine to create a worthwhile fighter that I'd recommend checking out. It certainly isn't the finest the genre has to offer, but it does more than enough to stand out." -- Jade King [Full review]

US Gamer -- 3/5

"Dead or Alive 6 carries much of the franchise's risque DNA, but shows a bit more initial restraint. The more revealing costumes are unlockable and the jiggle physics tend towards a bit more realism now. Combat remains accessible, but new moves like the Break Blow and evasion add new layers for DOA vets. Dead or Alive 6 could use a little more graphical polish and its netcode needs to be better, but it's a pretty good fighter all around." -- Mike Williams [Full review]

Make no mistake, the incredibly stupid oversexed nonsense is still here. *neckbeards rejoice* Putting aside that absurd idiocy though, the fight system (The real reason anyone should care about this or any fighting game) is more solid than it's ever been. Worries about the new 'super meter' are unfounded. It's done in a way that makes sense for this game. It's a great addition to the series as it's one of those 'didn't know what I was missing' mechanics.

All that said, the game has some other serious problems...
The story mode is a convoluted disaster that seems to arbitrarily bounce around random points in the plotline. It's so incredibly disjointed that going through it really sort of feels just like standing on ceremony.
Then there's the unlock system... dear sweet god... I don't know who came up with this, but they need to be pimp slapped, baby powder and all. You unlock random clothing 'parts' that eventually accumulate into costumes. It's entirely random though.... You beat an online match, oh here's 3 out of 1000 parts for a kasumi costume, even though you are playing as Hitomi. Now rince and repeat until the end of time to get the outfit you want.
Which brings me to the next point... compared to DOA5:LR the amount of content here is abysmal. I'm not even including the absurd (over 1,000$ worth) DLC that game had, just the base game content. There's way less characters, some of the basic costumes from that game are missing entirely, way less stages, and the end-fight victory sequences are minimal. You would get something like 1 of 7 victory phrases in the last game... here you get 1. I'm already sick of hearing Hitomi ask if I want to fight again.

Oh and the lip-syncing is beyond poor. Like, I've seen better dubbing in asian movies from the 80's. WOW.

I know it sounds like I'm just ripping this game apart - but let me be clear. I am stoked I bought this game, the fighting is fun. The online battles I've tried are great and lag free, and the tutorial mode (like last time) is clear and incredibly deep.

If you like DOA you will like this game.
Just don't go in expecting an experience comparable in content if you're coming hot off of DOA5: Last Round.

I'd give it a 3/5 in it's current state.
Here's hoping some of the reasonable DLC (Take your 100$ pack of costumes and shove it Koei-Tecmo) like characters, stages, and the like help to fill out the experience. I also wouldn't be surprised to see bigger updates, kind of how Street Fighter 4 would allow you to upgrade to the next Ultra/Hyper/Super w/e version.

Dead or Alive fighting games are known for sexy girls fighting. It's kinda their unique trademark in the genre.

This is definitely not a game for an SJW to review because they will get so hung up on the fact that clothes get torn off during the fight, rather than give the game a review based on its fighting merits.

Dear god! I had no idea Eurogamer got this bad.. to say nothing of GS choosing to use that ridiculous rant as the quote.. ugh embarrassing!

---------------------------------

"Koei Tecmo has looked back on the series' somewhat juvenile history and decided it’s time to grow up."

lol More like caved in to the unhinged rantings of irrelevant extremist ideologues and prudes.

---------------------------------

It's pretty pitiful and quite sad listening to/watching these types of losers obsess over the clothing of fictional characters, from a game they never gave two shits about to begin with.. "OZMG!!1! YOU COULD SEE SKIN AND THAT SHE HAS BOOBS!1!!1! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

What the hell is the issue with the girls looking sexy in these games? I don't know what's happening to society when a sexy girl showing off being sexy is a problem.....

If you don't like it then don't play the game, plain and simple.

@asultana121x: There's nothing necessarily 'wrong' with it - it's just annoying and childish. Like a 12 year old giggling about boobies with his friends. It's also annoying for fans of the fight-system, because it's so over-done that it detracts from anybody being able to take it seriously. Considering that the developers want the game to be taken seriously in the competitive scene... it's kind of strange that they haven't toned it down to at the very least.

@skyhighgam3r: Agreed. I mean, who cares if DoA’s target audience is young men who like boobs and we can literally play a dozen other different fighting games if we have a problem with it, when we can CHANGE this series? Changing content not marketed to me in the first place is kinda what I’m all about. I’m always giving yaoi manga bad reviews on amazon ‘cause dudes kissing is gross. Also I successfully got the film “The Notebook” pulled from my local theater on account of it not having enough action in it cuz I’m not really down with movies that don’t have AT LEAST 7 explosions on screen throughout.

@ronthallsballs: ... well that was an asanine rant.

"DoA’s target audience is young men who like boobs"
They are the ones who have said they want to broaden their demographic to the competitive fight scene.

It's really no more complex than this:
Koei-Tecmo: "We want DOA to be taken seriously."
Also Koei-Tecmo: "Check out these sweet bewbs."

You can't logically argue that it's not a ridiculous contradiction they are putting on themselves. I'm not gonna stop playing because it's still in the game or anything. I love DOA 'cause it's fun, but you 'do' have to look past the nonsense to get there. Like it or not.

Despite some controversial practices (DLC.) it sounds like Dead or Alive 6 does enough to satisfy those that have remained true to the franchise since its inception.

Most of the reviews out there so far seem to reflect this sentiment however I would be remiss not to point out that this game (more-so than most.) has seemed to garner a lot of negative attention from certain reviewers thanks to its reliance on what some perceive as a more “sexualized” nature.

While in many cases this notion is indeed warranted a handful of reviews out there seem like it is the only thing worth talking about.

Hopefully more of the reviews piling in (while still touching on this point if they do wish.) don’t let it override the other attributes of the game on display.

@videogameninja: From the majority of what I've seen, the comments regarding the oversexed nonsense seem more like a footnote. More problematic is the unlock system, the lack of things like online fight lobbies, and an abysmal amount of content in comparison to the last Entry's base game.

There's def some out there who see the 'bewbs' and disregard the game entirely, but I can't entirely blame them.
That's like a preteen boy screaming to be taken seriously when all he does is sit around and giggle about 'bewbs'.
