Dead Or Alive 6 Devs Want The Franchise To Be An Esports Contender

Set for launch on March 1, 2019.

The Dead or Alive series hasn't quite reached the same heights as Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, but with that said, it's still a fighting game series that's carved out a place for itself alongside the others since its debut nearly 23 years ago. With Dead or Alive 6 slowly approaching its March 1 launch--releasing on PC, PS4, and Xbox One--the developers at Team Ninja plan for the next game to offer more single-player and online content, with the aim that this will attract greater interest for large-scale competitive play.

While attending a recent hands-on session for the soon-to-be-released fighter, we talked with game director Yohei Shimbori, who spoke about the lessons learned from the free-to-play experiment with DOA5, and what the series hopes to accomplish in 2019.

Now Playing: Dead or Alive 6 - Brand New Gameplay Of Christie, Helena, And So Much More

"There's many different kinds of fans for fighting games," said the director. "Some play it for the story, some play it for esports. We saw that when Street Fighter 5 came out, it didn't have a story mode, and there was a lot of controversy around that. Once we saw that, we knew that people really wanted a story mode in their fighting games. There are also a lot of fans who really gravitate to certain characters. We focused more on that in DOA5 and the free-to-play versions, and with the expanded customization in DOA6, we wanted the fans to create their own personal versions of that character."

Recently, the game's launch was delayed till March 1, away from its original release on February 15. According to the developers, this was to ensure that the game would be in stable shape for its debut. While the DOA series has had a particular reputation for blending fast, fighting action with characters that leaned heavily into fan-service territory, the developers want the series to be taken more seriously as a contender with DOA6, which they hope will push the franchise further into the spotlight.

"I'm very proud of how we're able to release this game after DOA5, as there was a pretty long gap when that game launched," Shimbori said. "Also, I'm very happy to see that the esports movement has gotten bigger in recent years. I really want to work with fans to help DOA expand and reach that type of stage. My dream is for the DOA fanbase is for it to grow even larger than from what it is today."

@Pyrosa: And what does that mean dude??? Are you saying that it's not good enough?? Because clearly this is looking to be the most amazing fighting game and most anticipated fighting game of this year and probably will remain that way for another 4 to 5 years. You might be jealous over the fact that my Hayate and Kasumi are the main protagonists of this game and that ugly Rig guy is the main villain which he deserves to be -_- Its pretty obvious your against my game because the protagonists are beautiful and handsome like Kasumi and Hayate, the main bad guy Rig who looks like a generic Battlefield character, is that why your so salty about this game? Are you a Rig fanboy by any chance? Or a Zack fanboy? A Bayman fanboy?

I never understood Fighting games. The barrier of entry is quite high and I dont see much fun in a minute match. That said hope the scene gets bigger, there are people who loves fighting games.

@eva02langley: Don't you ever compare DOA6 to crap like SF5 -_- that is one of the worst fighting games I have ever played, it's just as bad as Tekken, Soul Calibur, MK and Samurai shodown. The worst part about SF5 is that main ugly protagonist Ryu he' on steroids and has a messed up manly overrated face -_- DOA6 at least has Kasumi and Hayate as the main protagonists and they are both very attractive and much better than Ryu from SF5. DOA6 is already getting great scores I mean IGN even stated how revolutionary DOA6 is so far and it beast all other fighting games. there is not one fighting game currently that stands a chance against DOA6 <3

Don't spam us with £1000 of DLC with a unpolished product? It's a good starting point.

this is like mortal kombat toning down the gore. once again games losing their distinct personalities to fit the mold of an "average game". same reason why every shooter needs chest high walls.

but oh well. doa2-5 exist and a carbon copy of those isnt exactly needed either

Geekcommentator on Twitter was right about this months ago. He said it wasn't about SJW but about Esports. This proves him right again.

@dragonsama: Team Ninja wasn't going SJW, but SJW's were ready to pounce on anything DOA 6 thus twisting and perverting the narrative. I predict DOA 6 will be the highest selling DOA game to date.

@hollywoodj: it will be the biggest selling game in the world. Nothing else will sell as much as DOA6 and Hayate and Kasumi will be the seller of this game ^_^ Im glad that other fighting games are failing while DOA6 is taking the spotlight and will finally be king of fighting genre ^^

Sorry horndogs if u see how covered up Kasumi is, a good indicater that they care less about your boners and more about creating a competative game.Only hope for mods.

@thepsychosis92: LOL. The PS4 beta demo had her usual selection of outfits, but I love the new costume brimming with sex appeal and cool. Nobody I know who plays DOA plays it for the costumes they play it because it rides the ride...

The problem is with the Publishers. They are more interested in spamming thousands of dollars of dlc than quality of life.

@uninspiredcup: Uhh dude that is what happens in Street Fighter games, Tekken, Soul Calibur mortal Kombat they ALL spam dlc but DOA has never done this before they never EVER do things like this and neither will DOA6 since DOA6 never has to worry about any dlc issues they don't rip off fans like other fighting games do or any other fighting games in general -_-

Yohei Shimbori already has your money so stop complaining xD

@hayatedoa6: Street Fighter has free quality of life updated as well. DOA has none.
