Dead Island Definitive Collection on PS4 Only Includes Original Game on Disc [UPDATE]

Dead Island: Riptide will be included as a download on PS4.

125 Comments

[UPDATE] Deep Silver responded to our request for comment and said, "There are limitations where you are unable to have multiple multiplayer experiences on the same disc, unfortunately we can’t comment further." The original story follows.

When Dead Island: Definitive Collection releases on PlayStation 4, only the original game will be included on the disc. If you want to play Dead Island: Riptide, however, you'll have to download it. This is unique to the PS4, as both games are included on the Xbox One version's disc.

Publisher Deep Silver revealed this in an exchange on Twitter. The two games not being included on the same disc is weird, considering Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, and Deep Silver's own Metro Redux all brought multiple games to the PS4 on one disc.

"We could've worded that better," Deep Silver clarified on Twitter. "You need a separate menu, you can't just put two games on disc the same way as on XB1."

Why Metro Redux had two separate menus for its games, while Dead Island doesn't is unclear. We've contacted Deep Silver for further comment on the situation and will update this story as we receive more information.

Dead Island: Definitive Collection releases for PS4 and Xbox One on May 31. PC players can buy each game individually on Steam.

Dead Island and Riptide aren't the only games included in the Definitive Collection. The third is Dead Island: Retro Revenge, and the game's premise revolves around you wanting revenge on the zombies that stole your cat. You can watch the trailer here.

Both excuses got shot down pretty quickly. Stop trying to cover up and tell the truth. Yall were lazy and things didn't work out the way you expected. Man up and go from there. Bet this will kill the PS4 sales.

@69ingChimpmunks: Could be time constrains with the PS4 version, could be coding problems while porting, could be the online component routines, could be the PS4 tools being to different to the Xone...
But nah, I'm sure you are totally right and they were just lazy in a 1-to-1 port from Xone to PS4 that it's relatively easy to do, and that the tooooootally did not run into unexpected problems.
Cool story, bro.

@Warlord_Irochi: pretty sure both consoles run on the same basic architecture which makes coding on them similar.

Time e constraints I could accept, but they blame technical issues with multiple multilayer experiences o a single disc, something that has been proven can be done. So whatever the reason is they are giving a bullshit update about it and not giving a legit reason, therefore deserving to be called out for bs at the least.

@VXXXJesterXXXV: One thing is calling BS their excuse (Which I agree it is) another is pointing Laziness.

"pretty sure both consoles run on the same basic architecture which makes coding on them similar"

They are quite different in fact. Xone's is Windows based while PS4's is Unix based. Still, the problem is not in coding for them; but making the programs run properly (specially when porting from one to another)

@Warlord_Irochi:
I think it's a mixture of laziness and dishonesty. They have given 2, which imo were BS, reasons that were both quickly shot down. We have seen plenty remastered collections all on 1 disc that work without issue on multiple consoles. I do not believe they are being honest at all about the reason why it doesn't work. And it also sort of falls back to "If everyone else can do it, Why can't you?", It's not like this is an amateur developer we are talking about. They've been around for over 20 years and the publisher has helped released hundreds of games.

If they had given a legitimate excuse from the jump, I wouldn't have said what I have said but I am going to choose to stand behind it. You don't lie or make excuses unless you are trying to cover something up. Maybe laziness wasn't the right word to describe it but what else would you call it?

@69ingChimpmunks: Ignorance. They just don't care. It's the same reason they never fully fixed their buggy games. Laziness is definitely part of it though.

@69ingChimpmunks: I put my money on time constrains coming from the publisher pushing the dev to release the game asap. That would explain why they made to cheap excuses.

It's all theories, although there is no doubt thst they have not been honest with the costumers.

Agreed but if that were the case, They could have just come out and said that they were rushed to put the product out that clearly wasn't ready for release. We apologize to those that bought it and have been affected by it and we are gonna fix it as quickly as possible. Would have been a lot easier than lying and trying to cover up the lie.

Still, Never played them but I'd be open to it once the price drops. On the xbox one of course lmao.

sniff sniff, I smell something funny hear. No matter what excuse they give, it gets shot down, so they are hiding and covering something in My opinion. Good thing I didn't go out and get this, be waiting to see how it turned out.

Besides, I think Dying Light blows these games away, my opinion

I already beat both games, I'm not bothering with this crap.......as much as I did like em I won't bother with it.....

If these fracking remasters were gen 6 games I might be more open towards em but FFS, I just beat these games as they came out, it feels like a few months ago [it was years] and that's the thing they're too new, too recent, Onimusha, Timesplitters, Deus Ex 1&2, KOTOR, Rogue Squadron trilogy, Jedi Knight 2, Jedi Academy, Republic Commando, Battlefront 2 would all make better remasters....

how about Baldur's gate Dark Alliance 1&2 or Gauntlet Dark legacy or hell Starcraft 1 remaster....Quake, Quake 2, Half Life 2 using the latest Source engine....how about the first 3 Twisted Metal games?? how about the Strike series or Road Rash???

sorry but these remakes of recent games don't interest me.....

Couldn't agree more. Like with the new Arkham remakes coming out, These games are fairly recent and don't need a remaster. If you are going to remaster any games, Why not do it to classics that fans would love to see remasters of. Any of the games you mentioned (especially KOTOR for me) would have fans foaming at the mouth for them. We see a Dead Island, which is a junk game to begin with, or an Arkham Asylum/City remake and all of us just shrug our shoulders.

@darthrevenx: Someone explained it a while back. Apparently the Japanese are super anal about licensing. Even something as small as a quick voiceover requires permission from the original actor and everyone wants their cut. It's nearly impossible to get everyone on board when it comes to Japanese games and that's why you see so few remasters and re-releases.

As for western games...not so much. Basically boils down to IP hostaging, and many modders create their own remasters anyway.

@HelIWithoutSin: It sounds like the issue is that both Dead Island games have been bundled as a single game where you boot it up and then choose which story to play via the menu (which is where the PS4 has problems with a single game having multiple separate online modes). The handsome collection etc all installed as separate games.

@pspearman: I have the Handsome collection on my PS4. You select which game you want to play when you boot it up from the opening menu. Unless I'm not understanding what you're saying, it's built into the one package as far as I can tell.

I did download it from the PSN, if that makes a difference, I don't know.

@pspearman:

But that's the point. It's the devs fault. A lazy port. They are bringing a game to PS4 and it's not designed for it. It sounds half baked to me so it doesn't inspire confidence about the remaster. My interest has just had a bucket of water thrown over it.

They should have spent some time building a nice polished UI menu and then reconfigured the multiplayer for each game so they are united as different modes within the same game, like pvp and coop are. But the dev considered that too much work because they just wanted to do a quick cash grab from the PS4 cash cow without too much effort.

The gamers will have something to say about that, seeing as it is us handing over the money.

@pspearman: So really they should have followed Gearbox's lead and have a main main menu where you choose which game to play and that way they could both be on the same disc.

Too late now I guess. And not that I would get this remaster anyway but still.

@attitude2000

Im guessing this has nothing to do with bluepoint games not including multi in the Nathan Drake collection. That is likely due to just laziness or figuring people didn't want the multiplayer(ie laziness).

@plerpy: The only explanation I can think of is that PSN *thinks* the Handsome Collection are actually PS3 games and is tapping into the old network or something whereas Sony wanted to ensure Uncharted was absolutely a PS4 game. That works since Uncharted is often bundled.

Deep Silver is starting to become the new THQ to me, some good products but lazy development and excuses. Almost as bad as EA and Ubisoft was/are. Ridiculous.

They could have done an installer for the games and had them install and only used the disc as DRM, totally lazy and stupid.

@uncle5555: No, if Sony's own exclusive Uncharted Collection didn't even have multiplayer, how could they? It's most likely a system limitation, and there's not much you can do about those. I also can't say for sure, but it may also conflict with PS Now having Riptide available as a port.

@gamerboy100: Clearly it's a case of penny pinching. Gearbox could afford it. Sony was facing a lot of uncertainty and still paying off a lot of their debts with the PS4's early success. They probably still have a ways to go. Deep Silver? Nah, they're just being cheap.

@_Silent_Jay_: Exactly, if the problem is with the console itself, there may not be a workaround. They most likely tried and just couldn't find a work around. No other collections like Uncharted have the multiplayer available, and I doubt Naughty Dog is lazy. There's some things the PS4 does, and some the X1 does, simple as that.
