DC's Green Lantern Corps Film Moves Forward With New Writers

The new DC Green Lantern movie is moving forward. It has been reported that Warner has hired new writers for Green Lantern Corps, which will feature two ring-wearing crime-fighting heroes.

As reported by Deadline, David Goyer and Justin Rhodes will collaborate on the screenplay for the film. Goyer is a comic book movie veteran, having previously worked on Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, Man of Steel, and the Blade films.

Deadline describes the movie as "Lethal Weapon in space" and states that it will be an origin story. It will focus on Hal Jordan, the classic Green Lantern, and John Stewart, an ex-marine who joins the intergalatic police force of the title. Stewart is notable for being the first black superhero to feature in a DC comic book, first appearing in a 1971 issue of Green Lantern.

The film was first announced at the San Diego Comic Con in 2015, where it was given a June 2020 release date, but there has been little news since.

Ryan Reynolds played the role of Hal Jordan in the 2011 film Green Lantern, but it was a critical and commercial failure. Reynolds subsequently admitted that he accepted the role before a script had even been written. "When we shot Green Lantern, nobody auditioning for the role was given the opportunity to read the script because the script didn't exist," he told Yahoo Movies.

"[But] I'm not complaining about it--it was an opportunity of a lifetime, and if I were to go back and retrace my steps, I would probably do everything the exact same way."
