The Dragon Ball series is perhaps best known for its characters' abilities to persevere despite being pummeled by an ongoing onslaught of attacks. That plotline seems to equate quite nicely with the embattled Atari company, which most recently settled its dispute with Dragon Ball rights holder FUNimation to continue creating licensed games based on Akira Toriyama's popular series, despite the fact that Atari expressed doubts that it would even be able to survive as a company past the new year.

Survive it has, launching a resurgent offensive today with the announcement that the first installment of the Dragon Ball Z 3D fighter franchise for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will arrive in 2008. Atari hasn't delved far into the specifics of what DBZ fans can expect from Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, aside from stating that the fighting game will feature online play and "radical 3D graphic effects."

While Atari is handling the publishing for Burst Limit, the game is being developed by Namco Bandai, creators of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on the Wii and PlayStation 2. Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on the Wii was the first installment in the series to feature online gameplay, and it also packed in more than 150 Z-fighters across 30 different stages and 10 game modes.
