Dark Souls sequel in question

From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki apologizes for "technical difficulties" in last year's role-playing game, says not sure if studio will make another title in universe.

The existence of technical issues in a game as large as Dark Souls comes as little surprise, but for developer From Software, these headaches might prevent a sequel from seeing the light of day.

Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.
Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.

In an interview with Edge, From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted there were numerous bugs in Dark Souls, and apologized to fans for this.

"Yes, there were technical difficulties," he said. "I don't believe that it's okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game--even in terms of budget and expectations. So we're very sorry for the trouble we've caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan."

When asked about the likelihood of From Software creating another game in the Dark Souls universe, Miyazaki said he's not sure it will happen, or if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues.

"We don't even know if we'll have another chance," he said. "We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer."

Technical issues do not spell doom for all large-scale games. The Fallout series, a franchise notorious for its widespread and sometimes comical bugs, has spawned numerous sequels despite these issues.

Dark Souls was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October to a glowing critical reception. It went on to ship more than 1.5 million units worldwide and was October's sixth-best-selling title.

I personally was adddicted to playing dark souls for the first month it came out and I do not think the minor bugs is enough of a reason for it to not have a sequel

At least Dark Souls works. Under the right, and easily met, conditions Skyrim is literally unplayable and that sold way more. Maybe the Japanese are more finicky about bugs (rightly so), or maybe he's just trying to hide the fact the game didn't sell well enough to warrant a sequel. 1.5mil ain't bad but it's not great and publishers are in it for huge sales, not break even sales.

I only had two technical issues on the Xbox 360 version. I had frame rate issues in Blightown and Lost Izalith. It made those two areas harder than they needed to be. The other issue I had was button delay. Often I would press the attack button only for my character to just stand there. I would then proceed to block to avoid an enemy's attack, only for my attack command to register leading to me getting hit/killed. I am willing to forgive From Software for the frame rate issues. They just need to lower LOD on distant objects and reduce particle effects. However, they really need to fix the button delay issues.

I'm a bit of a skeptic. It's like saying "Oh I'm so ugly!" so all your friends compliment you. But instead you say "Oh I may not make another game because fans won't forgive me for minor issues." And then he just waits until the fans come flocking and showing their loyalty. "Oh please make another game! We'll overlook every mistake next time!"

Can someone help me out here. My memory must be very forgiving because I only remember a few, minor bugs in this game. I remember mild to medium frame rate issues in two zones, a now fixed infinite item glitch, and ... anything else? Something tells me this is less about being upset about their own bugs, and is more meant as a slam on other large RPGs that typically feature a lot more bugs (and use the size of the game as an excuse not to apologize to fans). Of course, correct me if I'm wrong.

That's what I like about the japanese... their commitment to perfection.. it's why some of the Samurais gut themselves with their swords in the stomach, you know..... okay I don't know about all that but aside from my potential lack of historical and geographical accuarcy, the game screen freezing on my ps3 from time to time, and the hydra at the bottom of ash lake killing itself (goodness knows how i was going to kill it), I experienced no noticable bugs on my whole first playthrough. Make another one, Miyazaki. I wwaaaannt it.

Save the next game for the next gen console and retain the game's hype bcos if you do a third game ,speaking in terms of improving you will only be able to solve framerate drops and bug since it aldready is a well improved game.I dint suffer from bug issues cos this is wat happened to the Uncharted series.Uncharted 2 was a great game so is Uncharted 3. You can hardly see some differences between the two bcos it is aldready a well improved game.I loved both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and respect the games though i dint hav fun.Give some time for players to finish the games bcos many of them must love these games but still have a hard time beating it.

'He's not sure if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues'... Who talks like that? Look at Skyrim, it has 1 trillion metric tones more bugs and the only thing Bethesda said is "too bad n gtfo". Release another game FS and stop b*tchin cuz your bugs weren't THAT bad. Private servers are needed and since you can't fix back stabs (from what it seems after 2 games) just remove this sh*t, no1 will miss it.

Any conglomeration of art and algorithms that somehow seems to know when the player is being impatient is pure brilliance. I have never played a game that forces me to be patient like Dark Souls does. Well the Thief Series back in the day, but nothing recently. No need for apologies good sir! Get going on a sequel please!! The universe it's in doesn't matter as long as the gameplay and layout is as good as Dark Souls

@HollowNinja do you really think what PC-version would have been without glitches ? Silly. PC-games even more affected by bugs and often not even playable without patch or two. As for me, Dark Souls not so buggy, framerate drops not really big problem and, BTW, its caused not by technical limitation of console hardware, as graphics is not this game strong side :) But i love this game, it hardcore in the best sense.

Unbelievable. I played Dark Souls for 170+ hours and the only issue I ever had was the occasional framerate drop (nothing game breaking). I've played Skyrim for under 100 hours and the game is completely broken and we can't get Bethesda to tell us whether or not it will ever work properly, much less issue an apology. Clearly their is a difference between the western and eastern approach to game making and unfortunately, when it comes to taking pride in the work, western developers have a few things to learn.

This is terrible news. What's worse is that all of thsi could have been prevented with a proper PC version. Considering that around 80k people have already singed the petition, it's clear that they would have made a profit off it. Well, From Software, now you know what happens when you go console exclusive.

I'm not even a fan of Dark Souls, but I have to tip my hat to Miyazaki. This is a game zealously beloved by thousands, and nowhere near as glitched as some recent RPGs, and yet, he apologizes profusely to fans. Very classy. Bethesda, take note, THIS is how you do it. If this guy made Skyrim, Fallout, or any of their ilk, he probably would have exiled himself to the wilderness, or /seppuku

I'll also be playing Kingdoms of Amalaur, and I enjoy Skyrim, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying Dark Souls and it's trial and error form of playing. It's like playing the kind of games I would play when I was younger long before games had hand holding all the way through like is common place today. A good challenge can sharpen your skills.

It's nice to see a develeper take that much pride in having a game have as few bugs as possible, regardless of how much praise the game has gotten, and especially when I hardly see fans talk much about the bugs at all. I totally forgive it for the lag in Blighttown, and I actually don't even think about the bugs when I think of Dark Souls. Not to be cynical, but it seems that Skyrim is a lot harder to forgive, especially when I only have a PS3 to play it on(or not play it on).

I enjoyed Dark Souls despite it's glitches, hoping to buy the full game soon instead of renting it. It's good to have a challenge for a change these days. If another in the series is possible I would be quite interested, as long as it's multi platform since i have no desire to buy a PS3.

@poster012 I agree with you with respect your view on sequel churning to a degree. When a developer abuses an IP and doesn't really "create" anything new I think is the problem but perhaps that's what you were alluding to. If From Software does create a new DS+ but only results in some other modified open world with immaterial change to covenants and gameplay as an example, then yes, I think they would only be riding on their own coat tails and I would be very disappointed as they would be stopping way short of their creative selves. Better to end on a high note. If they do have that opportunity, I'm debating whether they should wait until PS4... hmm, just a thought...

You know, I really like the fact that they acknowledge and own the bugs and technical problems, agree that shipping games with those sort of problems isn't okay, and seem genuinely apologetic about the matter. That, coupled with the fact that they still turned out a stellar game despite those flaws is more than enough reason for me to give them another chance. I have a lot of respect for people who'll admit they dropped the ball, who own their mistakes and seem just as frustrated and disappointed that something they created didn't live up to its promise and potential. So, when Miyazaki says that, given the chance, they'd improve on their efforts and release an even better game next time, I'm inclined to believe him. I'd really love to see them do at least one more game in the series, an epic masterpiece, refined and polished to near perfection, and end things on a high note. I'm 100% supportive of another Souls game.
