Dark Souls sequel in question

From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki apologizes for "technical difficulties" in last year's role-playing game, says not sure if studio will make another title in universe.

The existence of technical issues in a game as large as Dark Souls comes as little surprise, but for developer From Software, these headaches might prevent a sequel from seeing the light of day.

Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.
Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.

In an interview with Edge, From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted there were numerous bugs in Dark Souls, and apologized to fans for this.

"Yes, there were technical difficulties," he said. "I don't believe that it's okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game--even in terms of budget and expectations. So we're very sorry for the trouble we've caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan."

When asked about the likelihood of From Software creating another game in the Dark Souls universe, Miyazaki said he's not sure it will happen, or if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues.

"We don't even know if we'll have another chance," he said. "We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer."

Technical issues do not spell doom for all large-scale games. The Fallout series, a franchise notorious for its widespread and sometimes comical bugs, has spawned numerous sequels despite these issues.

Dark Souls was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October to a glowing critical reception. It went on to ship more than 1.5 million units worldwide and was October's sixth-best-selling title.

Technical Problems? i haven't had a SINGLE one(besides the frame drop in Blighttown and a few other places, but it's NOWHERE NEAR as bad as some people make it out to be). From Software is just being WAY too hard on themselves. Please, FS, i beg you, we beg you, make another one.

@TimboII Normally, I would agree, but not this time. Souls isn't FROM's only franchise. Just look at King's Field or Armored Core. They've done plenty of them without a drop in quality. FROM SOFTWARE do care about their games so I trust them. If they say Dark taught them a lot and the next one would be better, then I believe them.

although I haven't completed it yet, and I'm in the very beginning stages into the game, but I forgive them from now for any "bugs". How can I do else with people who made me "gamer" again?

This guy must not play many other recent games because it was nowhere near as bad as most games now. Games that are unique need sequels simple as that. One less call of duty clone out there.

just give us a PC version and call it even. fix up the PC version or make it modable so we can fix it. I love the game i played it at a friends house and would definitly buy this for PC even if i didnt get huge graphic boost if i could get a stable Framerate and a PC UI i would be happy although i wouldnt whine for more ^.^

Aside from *very slight* framerate drops that happened rarely and only in Blighttown, the game was flawless. Just look at Skyrim if you want to see a buggy game.

Hilarious! The devs are being ultra modest- I think as a tease. They know damn well they made a brilliant game, and that we are all begging for a sequel. I am proud it is on top in the Top Rated games of Gamespot.

Wow.. +230000 respect to them. They don't want to release buggy games, so they consider not even having a sequel to an incredibly popular game.. If only other companies did this. If by the .0000000000003 chance that someone from the company is reading, please do a sequel. Good games like this are nonexistant.

@soproanos fan The difficulty is the whole point, thats like asking for a Metal Gear game having a non-stealth difficulty, without the difficulty its a fairly generic medieval rpg

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER ONE !!!!!!!!!!!! I'll never have enough Souls games. ...but do bring back Demon's Souls' gameplay. Dark was a little slow to my liking, it's not as fun to replay as Demon's was for me.

WTF this game ran great (minus blighttown). Guys imagine if western developers had this much humility! FROM Software, you revolutionised a dead genre, deserve 2011 GOTY, AND deserve more sales than Skyrim. But next game, please enable a network that allows us to connect with friends. I would LOVE playing the Souls series with my wife and friends! Great job FROM Software!!

The bugs were few and far between. The only noticeable problem was the frame rate in busy areas. Come on From, make another Souls game! :D

It would be a shame if they did not release a sequel to this game. It was completely awesome, and my personal game of the year.

It was a good game, but I just don't get all the hype. The core game mechanic always seemed like wasting time to memorize patterns -- just a mildly annoying mechanism that doesn't actually add to the vibe or gameplay at all. I agree that the bugs weren't that bad, but I appreciate the developer's concern. There are far better "RPG-lite" combat engines in fantasy games out there, and even more artistically deep (read: Japanese) games. Would I play another sequel? Sure. Would I pre-order? Nah. ...and therein lies the REAL reason why they might not make another game: This one didn't make them enough money.

STOP THE PRESSES!!! An incredibly good game that sold well and got positive critical responses from everyone is NOT going to be milked by sequels?? Maybe there's hope for the game industry yet! Respect + to the developers if they DON'T make a sequel...

The Soul games are so great! Please make more! There is nothing quite like them. Challenging, Fun, Innovative - Keep it up. Technical issues were minor IMO, definitely not a game breaker. And if your aware of them and concerned, that means the next one will just be that much better. Here is one fan that supports you all the way. Thank you for two wonderful games, please make more!

Quick someone stop these dudes from throwing themselves on their samurai swords! The game was GREAT, yes there was flaws, but compared to MOST titles, the flaws were minimal at worst. PS. ffs get out Armored core please, i've been playing your games for almost 17 years now.

The last patch fixed alot, including the unresponsive lock-on/toggling targets. The worst part now is the lag in Blightown.

Such a great dev,to acknowledge and apologize for their errors, and wanting to improve. After this response,I don't think they will have any problems with unhappy fans.Demon's/Dark Souls is good innovation, just the kind gaming industry needs, and innovation doesn't come fully polished. It takes time... I respect From Software a lot,and I also hope the talk about PC port of Dark Souls mets results...
