Dark Souls 2 developers 'have not put any thought into' Xbox One, PS4 versions

An interview with Dark Souls II co-director reveals the developer hasn't thought about next-gen versions of the game yet.

Co-director of Dark Souls II Yui Tanimura has said that developer From Software has not put any thought into next-gen versions of the game yet.

"We have not put any thought into this yet, so I unfortunately can’t answer at this point," Tanimura said when Edge asked him what it would take to bring the more graphically advanced PC version of Dark Souls II to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

When asked why From Software didn't develop a next-gen version of the game at the outset, Tanimura explained that the team's intention was to capitalize on the potential of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and deliver the game to fans as soon as possible.

Last year, Tanimura also admitted that the PC version of Dark Souls was "half-assed," and promised the studio won't make the same mistakes twice with the PC version of the upcoming sequel.

The PC version of Dark Souls shipped some ten months after the Xbox 360 and PS3 iterations. From Software promised that Dark Souls II will hit PC shortly after the console versions launch on March 11, 2014 in North America, and March 14, 2014 in Europe.

You can find the full interview with Yui Tanimura on Edge's website.

Check out the latest trailer for Dark Souls II below, and be sure to read our theories on what it might reveal about the game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> How do you feel "inside the game" when you can only interact with a small fraction of the objects you see? At this point we've pretty much been trained to ignore things like telephones, computers, and books in games. In most cases they're just part of the scenery, you can't use them. But that's realistic? A game like Super Mario 64 might look simple now, but when you play it, every new thing you see you can pretty much count on being able to interact with.

If developers want to increase the level of immersion in their games, they should focus less on detailed graphics and more on making everything function. You shouldn't have to give me a button prompt to make me understand that I can use something, I should assume that I always can.

@Dasim64@mr_enlightened Of course, graphics also serve to hold a game back. Sure, if you get two 100% identical games with only their difference in graphics, the one with better graphics is obviously better. But for just slightly better graphics, the cost of production sky rockets like mad, development time is extended far more than worth it. And lastly, such extra requirement in resources is exactly what scares major companies out of experimenting and creating great games such as the Souls series. And prevent smaller companies who would do something like this series, from being able to afford to make such games. In this case, unless it's a company like Nintendo who has proven to be capable of affording to make beautiful games that are also amazingly fun at the same time, I rather most companies focus on making the game actually fun, instead of more crap like Killzone Shadowfall, Knack, or Ryse.

Anyways, I agree graphics is a good thing. But only a very TINY and miniscule factor in a game's overall quality. You know what I care more about than graphics? Overall aesthetics, which graphics only play a really small part of. Why does Gears of War and CoD look like grey coloured shit while the graphically inferior Muramasa on the Wii look like a work of art? Because the latter has actual art direction. Where Muramasa comes short on graphics, the developers are so much better at everything else that factors into aesthetics.Compare Demon's Souls and Ryse. Ryse, while graphically pretty, is really bland outside of how shiny it is. It has realism...and nothing more. The characters look ugly, it's sets are narrow corridors, it has barebones gameplay, and nothing separates it too much from your typical game based in Rome. Demon's Souls, despite it's graphical inferiority, has environments that evokes the kind of atmosphere and emotion the developers of Ryse can only dream of. Just look at the Tower of Latria or Valley of Defilement, and compare it to the best Ryse has to offer.

I don't feel fully immersed in a game with chappy graphics, I want to feel like I'm inside the game

<< LINK REMOVED >> Graphics can make a good game even better but a crappy game will still be crappy. Graphics aren't the most important aspect of gaming but they certainly can improve the experience and I'm one that wants to see things move forward not remain stuck in the past. Unfortunately the money is still with the PS3 and 360 because so many people own them. Until the new systems really take off it's going to stay that way.

Haven't preordered it yet. Will probably do that before the end of the month. The Collectors Edition is way to much though. $120 because it comes with a 12in Warrior Knight Figurine. I don't need any of that crap.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Speaking of face, you think they'll fix the character customization in this game so that every character you make won't look like the fugly duckling who is born ugly and grow up even uglier? Love the game, and how it lets you customize your character. Hate how it's nearly impossible to make yourself anything more than an "abomination of nature".

I'm just glad they're focusing on the quality and enjoyment factor of the game than exploiting something like graphics in another console. They can port it, but screw graphics development. It just takes your funds away for some eye candy. Has no real long-term value, unlike the game itself.

I don't see how they can overlook the potential sales over the years to come on the next gen consoles. Can't be too hard to port it to next gen if they're making a PC version.

@sunbeam4 No it doesn't work that way. You can only hurt yourself with this scenario if you have two similar products from the same company that will eat away at each other. A multi platform game is still one product, and with the price point being the same on all 4 consoles, its almost irrelevant to from software who buys it on which system.

The only scenario that it could do what you said is if it was their goal to force people to double dip, which always a possibility, but then you also have to factor in backlash for perceived greed.

So how many people are doing and what I'm doing and going straight for the pc version so I don't have to buy a new console, wait for an additional release, or sit through inferior versions of DS2 as long as it releases the same time as the console version this time around?

Dark Souls is a pretty niche title, therefore they need a large install base to have any success at all.

I mean Dark Souls only sold a couple of million across an install base of 160 million.

If anything they'd probably just make a port to PS4/X1 a year or so down the road. It wouldn't make any sense for them to waste resources on a next gen version from the beginning.
