Cyberpunk 2077's Performance On Base PS4 Is "Unacceptable" In Digital Foundry Analysis

Cyberpunk 2077 is a compromised experience on the old-gen console.

Cyberpunk 2077 has finally launched this week, but if you're planning to play CD Projekt Red's latest game on older consoles then you could be in for a shock. Digital Foundry has examined how Cyberpunk 2077's first three hours perform on the base model PS4 and the PS4 Pro after patch 1.02 has been installed, and has detailed a compromised experience on those platforms. In fact, it's one that can be nearly unplayable. You may want to hold off for now if you're on these systems.

On the base PS4, game performance "mostly" reaches a resolution of 720p, but the 30fps performance target is prone to dropping to 15fps during more intense sequences. "There's just so much less detail," Digital Foundry's John Linneman noted of Night City's car and NPC count. This results in Cyberpunk 2077 having frequent slowdowns, stuttering, and a messy visual presentation according to Digital Foundry's analysis.

"It's about 45 minutes into the game when you realize things have taken a very sour turn and this is just not playable anymore," Linneman said. "It's this set-piece moment where you're driving down through the inner city and you're in a shootout car chase and it just cannot run. It's not just that it's running at 20fps, under 20fps, but it stutters as well as it streams in the world."

"For me, this is not acceptable. I would never want to play the game this way. It's terrible," Linneman concluded.

The PS4 Pro fares slightly better though, reaching a 1080p resolution most of the time, although it also dropped to 18fps during sequences such as an alleyway brawl. Cyberpunk 2077 is still far more playable on PS4 Pro when compared to the base PS4, and on PS5 the game is capable of reaching a 60fps presentation when run through that system via backwards compatibility. Digital Foundry also expects the Xbox One consoles to have similar results when it tests the game on those platforms. In our experience, when running on Xbox Series X, it runs well enough to be playable. However, we did encounter bugs nearly immediately.

"Cyberpunk 2077 is phenomenally buggy," our Cyberpunk 2077 review reads. "I played a pre-release build that was updated during the review period, and there's a day-one patch planned as well, but the scale of technical issues is too large to reasonably expect immediate fixes. I encountered some kind of bug on every mission I went on, from more common, funnier ones like characters randomly T-posing to several complete crashes. I didn't notice much of an improvement after the update, either."

There are parts of CP2077 that are amazing and there are parts of the game that are just plain wonky. My current score for this game is a strong 7/10 so far.

"Not playable anymore."

Funny. I'm at hour 35 on my first playthrough on a launch window base PS4. Six crashes and not a single game ending bug. Seems plenty playable to me. Guess I'm just not one of those guys whose c**k and b***s suck up into their abdomen while violently projectile vomiting on their TV screen if a game is anything less than 1080p/60fps. Some of ya'll never played on the PS3 or 360 in the days of New Vegas and Oblivion. It shows.

Shouldn't have wasted their time on a PS4 version, to be honest. This is clearly a next gen game. That's the true **** up.

I would prefer the game is overwhelming for current gen consoles, but good on next gen consoles as opposed to being good on current gen consoles, but underwhelming on next gen consoles. And I don't even have a next gen console yet. Thinking about what's the better enjoyment long run.

Seems that this is a real next gen game, maybe the first one.

I have the One X version and it runs well, but is clearly pushing the limits of what that console can do. Not really shocking to hear that the consoles from 2013 are struggling.

Yeah, I guess it's on the company to not be greedy and just cut those versions, but come on. You shouldn't be expecting the best version of a crossplatform, multigen release on the oldest system.

So that's what they've based their opinion on? That the base PS4 version's resolution drops to 720p? The Pro version is just as unplayable because as soon as you start driving in a car or enter a more populated area the framerate drops way below the 20fps they mentioned. I'm surprised to see that on PS5 the game manages to achieve 60fps. But I guess this just shows how poorly optimized the game was for consoles in general, with only the next gen consoles' superior hardware being able to make up for it.

Anybody know how it runs on Xbox One X? I was going to get it but all the stories of bugs and slowdown has made me hold off.

@niceguy3978: I'm playing on the One X and its not great. Iv only played around 3 hours and in that time i'v had one complete crash that sent me back the console menu. I'v also had 3 or 4 instances where the game will freeze for around 5 seconds before continuing as normal. Less game breaking bugs i'v seen include a lot of pop-ins in the environment such as cars suddenly appearing on the road or trash cans etc appearing out of nowhere. There is also a lot of texture issues. For instance the front of the vending machines in the game showing products are blurry and unreadable like how posters on walls etc would appear in PS2 games. Game looks lovely from a distance but it gets really ugly when you go up close. I'm still enjoying the game when it works but it definently has some glaring issues that will hopefully be addressed.

@niceguy3978: Yeah, wait at least a few more weeks because the game's completely broken. You can always get lucky of course but chances are very good that you'd encounter some bamebreaking bug sooner or later. It happened to me after only a few hours, so waiting until they fix up the game is all I can do now as well.

CDPR did already release another patch yesterday that seems to have improved the performance issues a bit, but the majority of bugs is still there so playing it is still not recommended right now.

@niceguy3978: I'm not too far into it. I've only encountered one bug during the training tutorial. Luckily the game auto saves and you can manually save too. I just reloaded the save point and problem solved. I lost no progress too. Just a minor bug though. Outside of that no bugs so far. No issues at all its not choppy etc..I can update ya tomorrow going to try and play more tonight.

I mean, we all know it has issues but it feels like GS is gonna quote very article they can find that would offset the flak they were getting for the 7 score.

@Carpetfluff: They were one of the last to post about the issues of the game on console, though.

Runs great on PS5. I've sunk 6 hours into it and I've had a few graphical glitches, but that's it.

Really enjoying the game!

Why is everyone surprised? CDPR is not known for delivering polished, optimized products.

@Barighm: I agree.

CDPR built it's reputation based on one hit Witcher 3.

Some are even claiming it is the best wrpg developer today based on just that one game while more established wrpg developers like Larian Studios, Obsidian Entertainment, InXile and Bethesda that have been producing excellent wrpgs for years, some even for decades seem to have been overlooked.

Witcher 1, CDPR's first game had terrible controls and gameplay which console gamers don't realize since it is a PC exclusive.

Having said that, I consider CDPR's PC gaming website GOG as really the best place to play older games since they make a lot of effort to optimize older games for new OS and hardware.

@firedrakez: I can only laugh at people that say The Witcher 3 is the best "RPG". It's an enjoyable, casual open-world action adventure game with dialogue wheels, absolutely - but it's barely a RPG.

@Berserk8989: I wouldn't say that. Choice and consequences are a major part of the game-or so I'm told-and it very much has an RPG system that will punish you if you don't level up.

The problem is the core gameplay is actually mediocre and mostly just rips off other games that did it much better. What it does well is appeal to open world enthusiasts which are a surprisingly forgiving bunch.
