Cyberpunk 2077 Developer Says It Has No Special Agreement With Sony Or Microsoft For Refunds

If you want a Cyberpunk 2077 refund, you'll be at the mercy of retailers and digital storefronts.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has stated that there are no special arrangements for refunds on its newly-released game. While most of the critical reception for Cyberpunk 2077 has been positive, concerns over poor performance on last-gen consoles resulted in a negative backlash from fans. [Update: Sony has removed Cyberpunk 2077 from PSN and will offer refunds.]

CDPR first put out a statement asking consumers to be patient until future patches could help stabilise the game on those older console platforms, but also explained that fans were well within their rights to request a refund. In an investor call earlier today, senior vice president of business development Michal Nowakowski explained that there would be no special treatment given to the developer from Sony and Microsoft with regards to players who ask for a refund.

Despite various articles that have shown up, that things are being opened just for us, It's actually not true. These policies are in place and have always been in place. They are not opened up specifically for us. Anybody who has purchased any title on PlayStation Network or Microsoft's storefront can ask for a refund."

That means that consumers will have to deal with retailers if they want to get their money back for physical copies, or the notoriously difficult refund policies of the PlayStation and Xbox stores for digital copies of the game, although some players have reported that they successfully claimed back their money for the game. However, an updated letter CD Projekt Red is sending out to those who requested a refund no longer recommends contacting Sony. It could be harder to successfully plead your case than with Microsoft.

Other consumers, however, have reported that their refund requests have been refused, with Sony urging its users to hold out for upcoming patches that will provide more stability to Cyberpunk 2077. I really don't understand how Sony and Microsoft run their stores so well despite the lack of any proper refund policy. It's criminal that you only get refunds if you haven't even downloaded the game, at least here in India. A huge advantage for PC gaming that all the major stores offer refunds, though companies like Ubisoft still have the "if you download, you can't refund" policy.

So, this is what it looks like to me:

Sony will not refund any digital purchase that has been downloaded and played. CDPR has to know this, and yet they guaranteed refunds on Cyberpunk 2077. People tried to get a refund with Sony, but they're being told to pound sand. People then contact CDPR, telling them that Sony has refused. CDPR announces that there is no special refund agreement with Sony or Microsoft, and tells people to go talk to Sony or Microsoft or a refund.

CDPR knows the refunds violates Sony's policy. Yet they still guaranteed refunds and told people to go through Sony's refund policy.

This is, quite honestly, one of the biggest fails I've seen a company go through. CDPR, not Sony, to be clear. They know digital PS4/5 will not be refunded, but they're still telling people to go through the process anyway.

Insanity.

I guess, it all depends on the good will of the service provider, technically, under Sony's refund policy, at least the base PS4 versions, falls under the headline of faulty content (FPS and texture issues). On the other hand, at least in my country, you can't refund certain goods that you've purchased (books, video-games, movies fall in to this category); and this is stated in the laws.

Just as information, I tried to get a refund from GameStop for PS4 physical version but was denied. I emailed CDPR at the refund email provided (Monday morning the email was sent) and have not received any response as of now. Not to start any arguments but I purposely bought the game from GameStop to try to help the business...clearly should have went with Amazon (Amazon’s price was 10$ less too if I remember correctly).

Microsoft refunded me no problem and I played cyberpunk for over 7 hours that might've changed since last night though
