Cyberpunk 2077 Dev: "We Want To Change The Game Industry"
"We want to say, 'We can do things differently.'"
The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red's upcoming ambitious RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, is one of the most anticipated upcoming games. The developers have high hopes for the game, something that is especially clear in a quote from quest designer Patrick Mills.
He said in the latest issue of Edge Magazine, as reported by ComicBook, that CD Projekt Red's ambition with Cyberpunk 2077 is to "change the game industry." The Polish studio wants to show the gaming world at launch that it can do things differently.
"One of the things about this company has always been we want to show the game industry how to do things," he said. "We want to change the game industry. We want to say, 'We can do things differently, we don't have to do things that way.' It's in our motto: 'We are rebels,' right?"
Mills apparently did not say anything about how Cyberpunk 2077 will "change the industry." CD Projekt Red recently released a lengthy gameplay video for the upcoming PS4, Xbox One, and PC game that looks incredibly impressive, for what it's worth.
Also in the interview, Mills discussed how Cyberpunk 2077 is not going to shy away from having a political message. In fact, a game in the cyberpunk genre must be political, Mills said.
"When you've got other studios saying, 'Oh, no no no, there's nothing political here,' we say, 'Yeah, there is.' It's not necessarily what you're expecting, and we're not going to talk about exactly what we're going to say--it's for you to decide when you play it.
"But Cyberpunk is relevant to today, extremely so. To pretend like it's not? Come on. Mike [Pondsmith, Cyberpunk 2020 creator] wouldn't let us. Mike would throw a fit if we tried to say, 'This is just about cool hairstyles and cool guns, that's all.'"
No release date has been announced for Cyberpunk 2077, but we know it's coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC at some point. The 48-minute gameplay video, which you can watch in the embed above, covers everything from how character mods and ability upgrades work to what it's like to explore the game's world, and what high-level combat abilities and boss battles involve. The lengthy demo features a number of important details, and we've put together a breakdown of all our biggest takeaways from the Cyberpunk 2077 demo.
